Its about the only film by Roald Dahl that i cant stand.... I loved Matilda and Danny and Charlie etc but i find the witches a terrifying film my ds (11) loves it...the bit when they turn into rats is horrible!!

I LOVED The Witches when I was little and Roald Dahl was my absolute hero- I always said I wanted to be an author like him, and now I'm a published poet and have a degree in creative writing.

It's a little dark, but it's fun.

I think the reason such books have longevity is that they are adored by children and adults alike. Why shield a child from the actual horrors of life.

MrsMattie · 14/04/2008 17:10

I loved The Witches as a child, although my mum admitted in later years that she hated reading it to me and thought it was sinister, with anti-semitic undertones. Oo-er.

Fairy tales are far worse. I had to read Hansel and Gretal to my dd yesterday. Now that's horrible

branflake81 · 14/04/2008 18:20

God, that film scared the shit out of me when I was a kid, as did the book - esp the grand high witch. Great stuff!

WombFor1More · 14/04/2008 18:29

I think it's quite scary but my ds1 & 2 would like to disagree! They watched it for the 1st time a couple of weeks ago. They loved it.

Kids are weird

Whooosh · 14/04/2008 18:32

I bought it in complete ignorance (Roald Dahl lover) for dd aged 2 (she loves anything to do with witchy stuff)-put it on to watch with her and even I was scared.

Now if anyone scratches their head in dd's presence she is convinced they are a withc and has to check their eyes for verification.

Triggles · 14/04/2008 23:03

Absolutely hated it. And DD hated it as well, thank goodness, as I did NOT want to see it again. Not going to show it to DS.

sparklyfairypie · 14/04/2008 23:36

i hate it but in secondary school my english teacher made us watch it 7 yes 7 times

we had to analyse the camera angles etc. it scared me even as a high school pupil
