To not get Cornwall?

Staying in St Austell.

Last few days we’ve been on the beach which has been lovely.

Now it’s clouded over, not really sure where to go.

Have 2 DC DS8 and DD4.

kids love theme parks. We like pretty towns to walk around etc. Maybe a boat ride.

wang are we missing?

We've booked a place in st Teath later on in the month, never been to Cornwall before so hoping to travel round and enjoy the good weather.
On our booking page there's a list of places to visit and driving distance so we plan to try most of those.

nodogz · 02/08/2024 15:03

Cornwall is nice to visit but I often think the hype is run by people who live in London and have never travelled anywhere else in the UK.

PTAProblems · 02/08/2024 15:09

We've just had a terrible holiday there! Looe was awful - overrun with dogs, too busy and that was before the school summer holidays started. Cornwall doesn't seem the same post-covid! Used to love it there. Everything was so expensive. We came home early!

Everyone who told me I MUST go and how MAGICAL it was all those years ago were Londoners … But I come from somewhere with beautiful beaches and landscapes, and friendly locals rather than the scowling ‘let’s rip off the tourists’ type so was seriously let down! Especially St Ives - the Tate there is shite, there I said it!
The Eden Project is good but that might be it…

Meadowfinch · 02/08/2024 15:14

The last time we went to Cornwall, we took our bikes and stayed near the Camel trail. We cycled traffic-free to Wadebridge and then on to the coast. Went body boarding, Ate sea food on the quay, Cycled inland and explored the countryside,

Spent days in Truro - a lovely city, and Falmouth. Explored the area around Bodmin, went to a tin mine and a slate quarry. Went mackerel fishing. Visited Camel Valley vineyard, wines are really good.

Mixed in with days snoozing in the garden, listening to the birds and home-making pizza. 🙂 It was great

ElvesAreReal · 02/08/2024 15:17

There's a fantastic comic book shop in St Austell (Into the Realm) which your kids may appreciate!

Flidina · 02/08/2024 15:20

We always stay I Hayle near St Ives, Charlestown is nice, The Cornish Cider farm, and Goldmine are not too far away, Fowey is lovely too, only ever been to St Austell once, wasn't much there to be honest. St Michael's Mount is great also.

Dh loved some telegraph museum near here if that’s still open.

It is.

I think you are a bit confused. Cornwall and Devon aren’t a day trip away from each other. Especially not in the summer.

They are, it's not that bad.

I got to Exeter from Falmouth the other day in 1 hour 15 mins.

Bristol is only 2 hours 30.

How fucking fast were you driving?! 😆

Helicopter maybe??? Our 4 hour to north Cornwall drive took almost 8 bloody hours a few summers ago… finally got DP to admit nothing about Cornwall is worth going for

shams05 · 02/08/2024 15:35

Is it really that bad? Or is it just too crowded?
I'm getting worried now

FaintWhistle · 02/08/2024 15:36

Mousehole

Cornwall is lovely but I’m not going there again until I’m no longer tied to school holidays. It’s too crowded at this time of year.

I’ve done the Camel Trail too, more than once. It’s great!

We also did the Eden Project of course whilst staying in this area, and we went to the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Lots of beaches too.

I also think I might need to go further into Cornwall if I went again.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/08/2024 15:40

I got to Exeter from Falmouth the other day in 1 hour 15 mins.

About 100 miles on the A30 in 75 minutes? Yeah, right.

dizzygirl1 · 02/08/2024 15:45

Having lived there (as a pp said it wad just visitors complaining) completely agree. Cornwall isn't great and there is a reason why I left and why my children thank me for not having them there to grow up.
Cornwall can be nice in the sun, but generally it's expensive and poor quality.

CormorantStrikesBack · 02/08/2024 15:53

Exeter to Falmouth is 99 miles and google maps says 2hrs10mins so 1hr 15 mins is good going.

CormorantStrikesBack · 02/08/2024 15:54

I haven’t been for 20 years, am seriously reconsidering next years plans….though it is early July were thinking of going.

How on earth did you manage Falmouth to Exeter in 1 hour 15 minutes? DH does it regularly by car and it's always been over 2 hours. I think even by Cessna it's taken longer when he's piloted himself.

Lordofmyflies · 02/08/2024 16:04

St Austell is a dump. Sorry OP, but for holiday, not sure why you chose it!
We spent yesterday evening having a bbq at the harbour after work. It cost a couple of quid for a sausage sizzle, marshmallows and a swim. Parking is free after 5pm. I guess it depends what you want from a holiday, but if you get away the tourist hotspots, there no where like it.

Haha, same. My now adult DC have thanked me more than once for leaving before I had them.

It can be beautiful and of course with a week on holiday, a car and a decent budget you can have fun if the weathers nice. But is it worth the money people spend to go on holiday there? I don’t think so quite honestly.

Falmouth to Exeter isn’t the same as St Austell to Dartmouth. Which was the suggested day out. I live here, I know the roads and the traffic.

Falmouth to Exeter in 90 mins. 🤥 You must have been speeding or traveling at midnight. Took me 1hr to get from Exeter airport to the other side of Exeter a few weeks ago.

Dartmouth has boat trips and is lovely to wander round, park and ride is your best bet to get down into it. There's a steam train somewhere too possibly totnes. Mousehole is lovely too.

Dartmouth is in Devon ! The steam train goes from Kingswear, opposite side of the river , but you can do a round robin trip , train to Paignton, coach to Totnes, boat to Dartmouth and ferry back over to Kingswear if you need to . It is one of my favourite places but isn't Cornwall ..

CormorantStrikesBack · 02/08/2024 16:30

Please someone tell me St Agnes is ok 😆

I see the usual slagging off has started.

Yes that's right we all live here because it's shite.

This was where me and DC spent Tuesday morning. I must be in denial ...

Gorgeous !!
