To not get Cornwall?

Staying in St Austell.

Last few days we’ve been on the beach which has been lovely.

Now it’s clouded over, not really sure where to go.

Have 2 DC DS8 and DD4.

kids love theme parks. We like pretty towns to walk around etc. Maybe a boat ride.

wang are we missing?

To be honest I've always found both Cornwall and Devon a bit overrated, and overcrowded in tourist season.

I far prefer both Dorset and Somerset. Less crowded, more friendly. Still the west country 😊

St Austell isn’t imo the nicest bit of Cornwall. If you go up to roseland peninsula you can get the ferry from st mawes across the bay to Falmouth. There is also a wonderful lush garden called Trebah with a woodland playground and paths which wind down to a small beach with an ice cream shop.

Bellatrixpure · 02/08/2024 12:58

Charlestown and mevagissey nice little Cornish towns. Trebah gardens nice but a bit of a drive from st Austell

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/08/2024 12:58

Have you been to Heligan? Short drive and magical. Eden is pricey but fabulous.

I wanted to try this last time but we didn’t have enough days

Bellatrixpure · 02/08/2024 13:03

Porthluney beach is nice if you get any warmer days

I see the usual slagging off has started.

Yes that's right we all live here because it's shite.

This was where me and DC spent Tuesday morning. I must be in denial ...

Yes. I thought the slagging off was absent for too long this year.

Helston

There isn't anything there, unless you want to try breaking in to the Naval base.

OldTinHat · 02/08/2024 13:07

@LarrysNewOwner won't be back any time soon because they've discovered Cornwall and the thousand and one places to visit!

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/08/2024 13:08

Go to Devon.

Been to Cornwall twice and on both holidays it rained most days. Trying to find something to do was tiresome due to the time taken to get there, the short visiting time, the cost of parking and the horrendous price of ‘traditional’ food. We found it was cheaper to go abroad.
There’s a joke about how a Cornishman takes pride in the fact that it takes them a week to relieve an Englishman of the money he has taken all year to save!

Well for starters Cornish men are also English but yep we do love to make money. Im booked up solid until end of Sept with October half term week also booked so we can't be that bad, and at present there are more tourists here than local residents.

Kids World

Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie · 02/08/2024 13:16

Heligan is brilliant, my kids love eden project, there's a small aquarium and museum in mevagissy which kills a few hours and lots of fab little shops, wheal Martyn, screech owl sanctuary, camel creek.

Newquay and Tintagel are about an hour's drive, and fun for a mooch. La

Wonmoretime · 02/08/2024 13:23

What you are saying is true of any coastal area in the UK , or elsewhere for that matter. It’s great when the sun shines and you are on the beach but if the weather changes you need other entertainment. Cinemas, bowling alleys theme parks, zoos, and gardens all cost ££s
If you don’t have a good budget for entry fees you have to fall back on books/board games and DVDs.

Cornishskies · 02/08/2024 13:26

You’ve had lots of fab suggestions on here of things to do and most don’t even mention our beautiful part of Cornwall, the “forgotten corner” is called that for a reason.

But honestly if you don’t “ get Cornwall “ after the week we have just had then maybe it’s just not for you.

If we Cornwall lovers have to persuade you then we are wasting our time , most likely it’s just not your kind of holiday. I’d hate a cruise or a trip to New York or a fortnight in Ibiza but I get that lots of people love those things.

@LarrysNewOwner - it's on the Roseland so not far from you. Can't give away all our secrets though ...😁

Gymmum82 · 02/08/2024 13:33

Flambards have taken away all their thrill rides so it’s a bit crap now

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 02/08/2024 11:26

Dartmouth has boat trips and is lovely to wander round, park and ride is your best bet to get down into it. There's a steam train somewhere too possibly totnes. Mousehole is lovely too.

Dartmouth and Totnes are both in Devon.

LarrysNewOwner · 02/08/2024 13:38

Thanks all. Lots of ideas.

will look them up and see what the kids fancy.

we have budget to pay for entry.

i think it’s because we haven’t been before so just don’t know where to begin, whereas we often holiday in the same spot and visit the same places

So your solution is to travel to the other side of Devon? 😂

St Austell is in Cornwall

Dartmouth is in Devon.

squirrelnutkin10 · 02/08/2024 13:43

I much prefer Sussex, i have lived in Cornwall and never understood the hype.

Often drizzly, often grey and there are prettier parts of the UK...
