To not get Cornwall?

Staying in St Austell.

Last few days we’ve been on the beach which has been lovely.

Now it’s clouded over, not really sure where to go.

Have 2 DC DS8 and DD4.

kids love theme parks. We like pretty towns to walk around etc. Maybe a boat ride.

wang are we missing?

@CormorantStrikesBack if you like swimming with sewage, it’s perfect.

We've just had a terrible holiday there! Looe was awful - overrun with dogs, too busy and that was before the school summer holidays started. Cornwall doesn't seem the same post-covid! Used to love it there. Everything was so expensive. We came home early!

Looe has always been awful IMO. One of the last places in Cornwall I’d go.

Excellent, that was my number one requirement 🙈😫

LimesOfBronze · 02/08/2024 16:41

@CormorantStrikesBack it does have a bakery folk rave about if that’s any consolation…

CormorantStrikesBack · 02/08/2024 16:43

I will take cakes and croissants over a clean sea any day of the week. 😁👍

ComealongMartha · 02/08/2024 16:45

@shams05 St Teath is pretty, not much there but definitely a good spot if you don’t mind driving. It’s also much less busy than everywhere else in Cornwall right now! Enjoy your holiday.

ComealongMartha · 02/08/2024 16:45

@CormorantStrikesBack Aggie is lovely.

When it was a child, we had a couple of holidays in Cornwall and Devon. If it was sunny and warm, we often went to the beach. If it rained, we either stayed in the caravan and read our books or played board games or we just picked a local town/resort and explored it in the rain.

Theme parks didn't exist then but if they had we wouldn't have gone to them as would have been too expensive. Just paying for 2 weeks in a caravan was a struggle for my parents.

We children were happy just to be away from home. Everything was exciting to us, regardless of the weather.

I think parents nowadays often seem to feel obliged to provide wall-to-wall entertainment for their children. But I don't believe it's necessary. If children are bored, they find things to do: reading, drawing, running around outside, playing ball, playing games etc.

The constant barrage of "activities" that today's children are subjected to seems excessive, to me. Maybe it's just because I'm an old fogey but the thought of having to "do something" or "go somewhere" every single day feels exhausting!

Falmouth, Truro and Penzance are v worth a visit. Avoid Cambourne and Redruth. The Lizard Peninsula has lots of lovely beaches inc Kynance cove - best at low tide. And villages like Mullion and Cadgwith are nice. The Helford river is great for paddle boarding and kayaking Google St Anthony boathouse for availability. Poldhu beach has a great cafe but get there early to park.

@CormorantStrikesBack download this app to check for sewage discharges, it's better than the info South West Water provides

@CormorantStrikesBack St Agnes is lovely. Really beautiful village and in my experience very friendly. Fantastic bakery there.

HelpMeGetThrough · 02/08/2024 16:58

How fucking fast were you driving?! 😆

Cracking on a fair bit.

Yerroblemom1923 · 02/08/2024 16:58

Go Trago in Falmouth, its an experience!

ErrolTheDragon · 02/08/2024 17:07

You must have been speeding or traveling at midnight.

Speeding and travelling at midnight, I'd have thought.

I’m currently on th Northumbrian Coast and we’ve just been having this conversation. I live in Devon and have been to Cornwall a lot over the years but just don’t understand why Northumbria isn’t more popular and Cornwall/ Devon are.

Northumbria is gorgeous. Literally stunning. Many of the beaches are nicer, longer, more beautiful and sandier. Villages are far nicer. There are stunning castles and islands to visit. It’s cheaper, simpler, les spoilt, calmer, cleaner with more space. There is more wildlife, cleaner air( bugs on the windscreen), masses to do indoors and out but nice stuff not tacky theme parks or tat shops, there are no crowds or traffic jams and you can get into any car park any time, nicer people, nicer tourists( less fussy Bodenites loud parenting in boats taking over beaches and villages.Edinburgh is just up the road or a short train ride and gorgeous.

Took us 7 hours from Devon but worth every minute. Can’t get my head round the rest of the country battle down to Devon and Cornwall when other areas are so much better. If I lived in the SE no way would I bother with Devon and Cornwall when Northumbria is not much further.

Best not head to Liskeard then, you could get lost in there till Christmas!

MerryMaidens · 02/08/2024 17:22

Everyone should go to Trago at least once for the 'experience'. Brexit made flesh. We used to love the peacocks as kids too.

I'm from the area originally OP. Eden is ok, Heligan is nicer and unless it's totally chucking it down it doesn't matter. There's an awesome kids playground and you can go back multiple times in the week for the price of a ticket. Nice farm shop too. Pop down to Meva for some crabbing and chips.

Lol at suggesting Penzance it's bloody miles away.

Charlestown has a little museum which is nice and Wheal Martyn has some good walks and the Clay is actually pretty interesting away from the coast.

Rent bikes in Pentewan for the trail? Camel trail is a nice longer day out on bikes.

There is a pool in Newquay with some flumes and a disappointing zoo you can visit...

I really wouldn’t support Trago. They were, massively pro Brexit, Nigel Farage just did a speech there, owner is anti gay and they’re not that nice to employees. It’s also hideous .

I see the usual slagging off has started.

Yes that's right we all live here because it's shite.

This was where me and DC spent Tuesday morning. I must be in denial ...

That reminds me of Carne beach on Roseland, which is possibly my favourite beach ever. I've only ever been to Cornwall outside of school holidays, but I can't imagine Carne ever getting very busy (not a lot of parking and very little there apart from a posh hotel).

There are beautiful walks all over Cornwall. I like the walk along St Anthony's Head, especially if there are ships coming and going and you can watch the pilots being taken out or brought back. The county has a tremendous variety of landscapes.

St Michael's Mount is worth a visit, you can get the boat across or walk across the causeway if you time it right. Loads of lovely gardens to visit (I love Trelissick, and Heligan is great, especially the kitchen garden with its pineapple pit). Also Tintagel, if you've never been to the castle.

I feel the same. We used to go for walks and play on the beach, and read in the evenings. Why does every single day have to involve some outing or activity?

St Austell is dire!
Personally, I don't understand the love for the Eden Project (especially at the price it charges!). I've been twice, once very shortly after it opened and again last year. Thoroughly underwhelmed on both occasions, and I like gardens etc.

Newquay zoo?
Trago Mills (bit of a weird hodge podge of a place but I loved it as a kid!)?
Padstow Sealife Safari boat ride gets good reviews? As does AK Wildlife cruises?
Camel creek Family Adventure Park?

Or head to Plymouth for the National Marine Aquarium?

Thanks for this list! We are staying in Boscastle Harbour in a couple of weeks, and will definitely book the Sealife Safari boat ride!

It’s ok but there are more beautiful places in the uk. I don’t get why so many flock to Devon/Cornwall and put up with all the crowds. It’s miserable and not necessary.

Rickythepig · 02/08/2024 17:55

Ilfracome to see the seals or St Ives is super.

You’ve had lots of fab suggestions on here of things to do and most don’t even mention our beautiful part of Cornwall, the “forgotten corner” is called that for a reason.

But honestly if you don’t “ get Cornwall “ after the week we have just had then maybe it’s just not for you.

If we Cornwall lovers have to persuade you then we are wasting our time , most likely it’s just not your kind of holiday. I’d hate a cruise or a trip to New York or a fortnight in Ibiza but I get that lots of people love those things.

I never understand why it's forgotten but this exile is always glad it is! 😍
