I just think they're horrible. Surely they're not hygienic. His mother insists on buying them for him every christmas and he insists on using them.

I'm going to bin them whatever you all think but just wondered whether I'm alone in this view?

foul hideous things
burn 'em

PuhPeng · 14/04/2008 13:51

More environmentally friendly than tissues. Cheaper too. Softer on the nose.

I used to be a bit iffy about dp's, but I've got used to them. They're very him. And dd loves daddy's hankies which makes me smile because when I was little I loved my dad's big red spotty hankies.

Yes, a bit unhygenic, but there are worse things to be.

Tell him to wash them himself

claricebeansmum · 14/04/2008 13:55

I like them but I do cull them when they have holes and bike oil on them.

Father Christmas brings DH a pack every Christmas.

They are a bit like a grown up muslin - can be used for all manner of things in an emergency.

Come to think of it not sure DH ever uses them for his nose more an all purpose cloth!

purpleduck · 14/04/2008 13:58

mildmannered
I am at you saying your dp's hankies are "green"
eeew!

janinlondon · 14/04/2008 13:59

They are ghastly. Bin them. I would think boil washing handkerchiefs is less environmentally friendly than using recycled paper?

sparkleymummy · 14/04/2008 14:01

Oh God I've just fished them out of the bin on the strength of the "they're very him" argument.

Ok so yes they make him look like a bit of a geek but who cares about that.

Bless him

My dh couldn't live without his hankies! I've just ironed about 50 of them. I do think it's rather old fashioned but yes, environmentally it's better than tissues I suppose. He isn't going to change now anyway.

claricebeansmum · 14/04/2008 14:07

Waht does he do with 50 hankies?

you dont boil wash hankies do you?

i prefer hankies, must get some more.

foofi · 14/04/2008 14:09

Some days he uses several and sometimes I'm a bit behind with the washing/ironing!

WanderingTrolley · 14/04/2008 14:10

I love a hanky, even though I'm not a blerk.

Surely no more unhygienic than a washable nappy?

I boilwash nothing, me.

claricebeansmum · 14/04/2008 14:11

I don't boilwash either. Just go in with the other whites...

Oblomov · 14/04/2008 14:24

Misdee, you do ??
I didn't know that there was a need to boil wash anything these days.

Alambil · 14/04/2008 14:33

I have been searching for hankies for DS - there aren't any blue small ones (women's size) which is a shame... he loves them (he's 5!)

thanks mmj

Anna8888 · 14/04/2008 17:28

Revolting unhygienic things. Bin them.

andiem · 14/04/2008 17:37

they are a source of reinfection spreading viruses etc around I would bin them and use tissues
here

mumeeee · 15/04/2008 23:47

My DH hates tissues and thinks they are more unhygenic than hankies.

m happy for him to use hankies.

nkf · 16/04/2008 00:07

I once said to someone that hankies always struck me as a bit unhygienic and she said "yes, but it's a class thing." So there you go. There may be more to those squares of cloth than just nose wiping.

madamez · 16/04/2008 00:36

Hankies feel much nicer on the nose, and can just go in the washing machine when necessary. But there's no need to iron them FFS! Why iron something you're going to blow your nose on? Might as well iron something and wipe your bum on it...

RosaLuxforherfriends · 16/04/2008 00:39

DH never uses anything else and the DDs love nicking them. I wash them at 40 with some Napisan in the wash. If he didn't use them what the feck would we get him for Christmas?
