It’s better to quit than be sacked

I have a new job 2 months ago, completely different from what I did before and I’m doing really badly.

it’s fairly basic admin but very well paid, flexible, great employer with lots of benefits. On paper all good. I had a catch up with my boss today and she had a long list of mistakes I’ve made. I feel utterly useless and embarrassed. It’s just basic stuff like no replying to emails, setting up things wrong. She kept asking if I felt I needed more training etc but it’s not technical stuff I’m struggling with, it’s just basic tasks.

Its probably relevant that I have ADHD which I disclosed at interview and I’m just struggling with focus as it’s so many bitty tasks.

Do I accept that this just isn’t the right job for me? I feel like everything I do now will be scrutinised and it’s making me so anxious

ADHD is not an excuse,

It took me about a year to settle into my role and while I am not being disparaging of your struggles with ADHD, feel that 2 months is not enough time to get through the, 'stupid phase,' of your job.

Give it another 6 months and then decide.

ADHD is not an excuse,

No, it's the reason. Talk to access to work. They are a brilliant support. My oh was recently diagnosed with Autism and ADHD and they have helped him to much.

Check your emails each day and copy each one (right click on it) into a specific time in your calendar. Colour code them if you like to stand out from meetings if you have those.
Yuh can also set plans in the email program such as done, pending reply, need info etc.
the calendar thing works the best for me though.

BurntBroccoli · 31/07/2024 20:37

That should be, you can also set categories in Outlook such as done, pending etc.
If you don't have time to action an email that you've added to your calendar, push it into the day after.

Ones you've done can coloured green.
It's a good way to show how you've spent your time too.

Don’t quit. If you think you’re finding it difficult to complete the tasks due to adhd speak to the person responsible for equality and diversity. Coaching could help. Do that before you quit. If your manager is supportive, and it sounds like she’s trying to be, she’ll probably appreciate you taking on the feedback and asking for help to improve. They liked you at interview, if they’re half decent employers they’ll want you to do well.

ADHD is not an excuse,

From the words of a neurodivergent mouth 🏆

I spent years telling myself I was lazy & stupid, I’m not, I have a disability that affects every aspect of my life. I have never used it as an excuse but it certainly makes life harder, hence there is things like access to work to aid disabled people
