To think he shouldn't have been paid in full while off long term. As its more like being self employed.
But mainly cos it was 475k upwards of our TV licence money!
Another example is when a famous radio presenter s decide to go off for an extended break to film another show or something. Surely they don't get normal pay when they have extra weeks off not on air!!

Let be honest here - there is a massive difference between someone

a) being sent an unsolicited image of child abuse, being horrified and telling the sender to stop contacting them, delete said images immediately and report.

b) engaging in a long chat over 2 years with an individual sending images that include images of child abuse with a weak ‘oh don’t send me anything illegal’

HE was in the B camp. He may not have actively requested children within the WhatsApp messages but he did nothing to distance himself from someone supplying such images who quite clearly knew children were involved.

The BBC fulfilled its obligations to an employee. No questions to answer!

Not even about his 40k pay rise whilst suspended?

protectourchildren · 31/07/2024 10:35

Really? Public sector maybe, I doubt very much any small to medium sized private businesses can afford to do this.

I was actually ill and in hospital and ended up on statutory sick pay (which isn't very much) - why on earth this man was paid so much when facing criminal charges is beyond me. Why does someone facing gross misconduct get paid more than someone who's ill? I'm guessing this is a 1% vs the rest of us issue.

I'm glad I no longer pay my tv license. Very easy not to, you just have to submit a declaration that you'll only watching on demand services, no live tv.

Because in this country, a person is presumed innocent until they are found guilty!!!

Compl inappropriate, I know, but Huw does look quite cool today with his sharp suit, silver hair & dark shades, doesn’t he?

the80sweregreat · 31/07/2024 12:27

I suppose that if they had sacked him or suspended without pay he would have taken the bbc to a tribunal and they would have been made to pay out even more money as happened in the sad case of Baby P and the lady employee / CEO from the council who ended up with 200,000 k ( referenced below)

we haven’t seen his contract, but we do know he has been on sick leave with depression. Since being outed for criminal activity, but prior to that had worked consistently despite apparently having depression since 2002. His depression didn’t prevent him working when his public image was intact. This is not legitimate sick leave in my opinion. It is a fiddle to get him off BBC screens for damage limitation. The honourable thing for him to do was resign and the proper thing for the BBC to do was investigate his conduct and sack him last year. He has been treated with undue kindness. Given the BBC has a finite budget and many low paid staff, and given its history of protecting paedophiles, I think it should be fined.

Your "opinion" is wrong.

I was just thinking that the revelations about the teenager (that kicked this all off) put his glow up a few years ago in a new light. I don't want to think about it too closely.

Maybe if he doesn't get a custodial sentence, you could reach out to him for a date, if he's still into adults that is

Nah. His shades, in this case, are the equivalent of the Dog Cone of Shame. He’s just another older white male in an expensive suit who weaponised his position of power and used it on young vulnerable people JUST to get an erection. Amazing. Mind boggling.

BobnLen · 31/07/2024 12:31

JerkintheMerkin · 31/07/2024 12:05

It's unlikely he will be jailed for it. Will more likely be put into the SO register and monitored. Unfortunately that is the standard sentence for this crime. It's so prevalent, the prisons don't have the capacity to jail everyone who view images. The sheer number of people who are caught on a monthly basis is staggering.

A work colleagues husband did similar and I think he got a suspended sentence and of course his name was in the local paper and I presume SO register

eatfigs · 31/07/2024 12:32

I knew he was dodgy but never expected him to be a nonce wtf.

Astounded that they let a paedo announce the Queen's passing.

LostTheMarble · 31/07/2024 12:34

RedToothBrush · 31/07/2024 11:39

He's just pled guilty.

Its now irrelevant. He will simply be sentenced now.

He either hadn’t or it was breaking news when I posted that at the start of the thread. Obviously things have moved on since then.

I hope he gets the sentence he deserves, it was evident that something was very wrong when it came out about the initial young man. Too many people were quick to defend him then, but as a pp said he obviously wanted sexual imagery as close to the line as possible when it came to young lads and thought he’d covered himself by asking for no more illegal material.

I’ll speculate myself about him pleading guilty from the start. At this point find it difficult to believe his conscience made him do it - did the BBC lawyers not want an ugly trial where they would seem to be covering for another peado in their midst? Maybe behind closed doors they allowed him pay and retirement if he promised to give himself up willingly.

Being presumed innocent until found guilty is a cornerstone of a civilised and fair society.

I hate that he has been paid so much money, now that he has plead guilty. He obviously did it.

But I am very happy that if I were accused of a crime that I don’t commit, that I couldn’t just be sacked on the spot and not paid until the outcome of the police investigation.

Well said.

Even if the BBC knew he was into 'just 18' type porn, i.e. youthful looking but legal, they would have been in trouble if they sacked him or removed him from the roster.

I think it is disgraceful that he took the money while the investigation went on and then to plead guilty. It says he knew he did but just keep taking the money,

I agree. He should have resigned a long time ago. Disgraceful of him to keep taking taxpayers money when he knew what he had done.

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 31/07/2024 12:38

He was always trying to pass himself off as a committed Christian too.

I think the complaints didn’t come in until spring of 2023. I’m assuming (I really want to assume!) the BBC had no idea until the parents presented their complaints/concerns.

Runnerinthenight · 31/07/2024 12:40

Heronwatcher · 31/07/2024 11:20

I don’t blame the BBC. Sounds like Huw Edwards didn’t tell them the full details and I don’t think they would have had any right to demand details/ sack him on the spot whilst the criminal investigation was underway. I’m sure they would have taken advice and followed it- and I’m sure no one in the BBC was chomping at the bit to pay him.

It’s often more damaging/ expensive not to follow the law- remember when Sharon Shoesmith- director of children’s services at Haringey when Baby P died- was sacked on TV by Ed Balls with no apparent dismissal process followed- she later won a payout of over 200k for unfair dismissal- paid for by the taxpayer. Good for the headlines at the time but bad for the taxpayer long term.

Normal procedure is for an organisation to await the outcome of any criminal proceedings before conducting its own investigation.

Unfortunately many men like him hide behind the most wholesome image they can muster. That isn’t of course to say all religious people are secretly monsters but it’s certainly a great cover to have - who would suspect the family man, face of one of the biggest news institutions in the world and a committed Christian would like young boys…

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 31/07/2024 12:43

Exactly, @LostTheMarble

hellotowel · 31/07/2024 12:43

Makes me sick watching BBC News today knowing that any one of these men could be a wrongun. Honestly I think the time has come to ban men from holding high-profile responsible jobs, it's just too risky.
