Help I'm in UTI misery

Sorry for posting on AIBU, I'm desperately looking for tips to help with a UTI. I am in so much pain 😩 trying to avoid antibiotics unless I absolutely can't shift this any other way. I've sent DP out for cranberry sachets from the supermarket. What else can I do?

You need antibiotics. Bit also pre and pro biotic supplements to replace what the antibiotics take away

diggermama · 30/07/2024 21:35

Another vote for D Mannose. Buy these! Life changing.

Taking daily vitamin D has stopped me getting as many UTIs as I used to. No help in the moment though sorry!

NewGreenDuck · 30/07/2024 21:39

Please get some antibiotics. I had a UTI earlier this year. I was weeing blood at 1 point. Can't remember the name of the antibiotics but I only had 6 and after the first one the pain went.

ShoehornSheryl · 30/07/2024 21:41

Cranberry doesn’t work.

sit in a bath.

d mannose can apparently help. I get mine from sweet cures as it’s entirely natural.

I’ve never managed to avoid antibiotics yet tbh and I’m not sure it’s worth the misery of trying to avoid.

Thank you, I've bought these.

Do they have any horrible side effects or is it just natural / herbal?

utihelp · 30/07/2024 21:44

Just to clarify I'm not looking for a medal by avoiding ABs, I'm trying to avoid nasty side effects as ABs make me extremely unwell (bad gastro side effects). I need to be able to leave the house to go to work so I don't want to be housebound

Totally natural, it's just a sugar that isn't digestible. It stops the bacteria adhering to the bladder wall.

Toucanfusingforme · 30/07/2024 21:46

Antibiotics are your friend. And I realise this is not an immediate solution but…..Post menopause I had a lot of problems with UTIs. (Usually post sex). After a bad spell and a lot of antibiotics my GP put me onto vaginal hormone gel and Hiprex tablets (which act as a sort of antiseptic for the bladder.) Between the two of them it’s been a big help. Especially the hormone gel. I still follow all the usual advice for warding infections ie pee before / after sex, wash etc, but what it lacks in romance it makes up for in comfort!

Toucanfusingforme · 30/07/2024 21:46

And dmannose did nothing for me!

Emma330912 · 30/07/2024 21:48

They're horrendous! I'd have to ring 111 & hopefully get antibiotics for the morning, in the meantime drink loads of water & drink those little sachets you can buy. Hope you feel better soon!

BuggeryBumFlaps · 30/07/2024 21:49

Cranberry sachets, cranberry tablets (vitamins), orange juice used to help me but it's a mixed bag with people saying it made it worse as its acid. Lots of fluids and take some paracetamol

Diddly233 · 30/07/2024 21:49

Only ever had a water infection once at 17 it was excruciating. Get straight to the GP and take the antibiotics if necessary. If it travels to your kidneys you'll be on a ward with a drip, trust me.

Take the antibiotics and drink as much as you can.
Last time i had one i had to sit in a warm bath (no bubble bath etc) at 3am as it was the only thing that helped... if you need to wee in there, just do it you can shower afterwards. Helped me a lot.

LaWench · 30/07/2024 21:53

Once the pain has kicked in, only the ABs work for me. The time I tried to soldier on, I ended up in OOH with a kidney infection. Please be careful x get better soon.

Wtafdidido · 30/07/2024 21:55

Lemon barley is the absolute best thing for relief! Must be lemon barley and not lemon squash

PoopedAndScooped · 30/07/2024 21:55

Agony = Take the antibiotics!
Why are you trying to avoid them?

utihelp · 30/07/2024 22:00

So I've taken paracetamol and ibuprofen, drank a cranberry sachet and I have a burning hot water bottle on my skin which seems to be a distraction from the pain if nothing else. If no better tomorrow I will ring GP for antibiotics ☹️

Explained further up, they give me severe gastro side effects so it's just swapping one problem for another essentially. Trying to avoid that

Ah thank you for that explanation. That's interesting. Had never heard of them. Hopefully they help when they arrive tomorrow!

Why wouldn't you take the antibiotics?

ANGIEPANGY77 · 30/07/2024 22:06

AZO or Cystec will help with the pain. I'm in America and both are readily available in our pharmacies. Hopefully, they are available to you.
