To boycott the Olympics for allowing a rapist to compete

I cannot believe in this day and age a convicted child rapist has been allowed to compete in the Olympics.

I know he was booed when he was competing but that's not enough. He never should have been allowed to compete in the first place and as a result I'm not watching any of the Olympics and encouraging others to do the same. I know that means other legitimate athletes will sadly be punished for the actions of one man and the decision makers for the Olympics - but what else can you do to send a message it's unacceptable?

For context, the volleyball player raped a 12 year old girl in Britain who he met online when he was 19 and was convicted in 2016. To add further insult to injury he only served 1 year of the sentence and seems to have gone on to marry a police officer!? He also has since said he's not a pedophile (although admits he did do what he was accused of) and that the media saying he is one is 'a load of nonsense'.

Unbelievable that this isn't considered more serious in a country like the Netherlands or by the Olympics itself.

A child of 12 can't give informed consent...end of...So a man who denies that what he's done is appalling isn't 'rehabilitated'.Sentences for rape and paedophilia are obviously pathetic and this guy should be barred from competing...in a sane world which isn't riddled with misogyny. But when you think of how common child abuse scandals are in elites...maybe the olympic committee have reason to allow paedos to compete. How many of these men will secretly...watch child porn...normal people would ban child abusers from sports. If these guys are deaf...it calls their morals into question. And who would marry a child molester?!!!and have a kid with him🤮

She initially told him she was 16 and later told him she was only 12 (almost 13)
Judge Sheridan said it was not a case of sexual grooming, but added: “You were the adult, she was the child and until you recognise that you will remain a danger to young girls".

The court had heard how Van de Velde’s child victim had been consumed with guilt in the wake of his arrest and felt responsible for him being in custody.

Your article also says

"The shamed sportsman, who was tipped for Olympic stardom, knew how young the girl was at the time he took her virginity."

"She certainly made it clear she was seven years younger than him"

"A young, naive foolish young child had formed the view that you loved her. In reality you only knew her on the Internet, had never met her before and were fully aware of the age difference.”

The vast majority of adult males (as he was) knows that a 12 year old girl is a child. She thought he 'loved her' he clearly didn't. He was and is a vile adult male.

The victim blaming of a 12 year old raped child on this a parenting site is appalling.

What goes wrong in people's lives that makes them desperately defend child rapists? This thread is really bringing them out of the woodwork.

Isn't it just. I wonder their reasoning and hope they don't have children anywhere near them

In the United Kingdom, statutory rape is a type of sexual offense that occurs when one person has sexual intercourse with another person who is under the age of consent. The age of consent for sexual activity in the UK is 16 years old. This means that it is illegal for someone to have sexual intercourse with someone who is under the age of 16, even if the other person consents to the activity.

So he committed statutory rape.

DancingNotDrowning · 30/07/2024 18:20

@justthefacts2

“statutory rape” does not exist as a separate offence in England and Wales. The law accepts that no child under the age of 13 can consent to sexual activity and so if someone has sex with a girl knowing she is under 13, he commits rape. He knew at the time he had sex with her that she was 12. He raped her.

i don’t accept that she was not groomed and I suspect a judge hearing the case now would agree. He was tried 10 years ago and thinking on grooming has matured.

i have DC that are 20, 19, 15 and 13 and the idea that any of the friends of the 20 & 19 yr olds could be sexually attracted to the 15 & 13 yr old is abhorrent. They are so different in terms of maturity.

He was a stupid 19 year old kid who slept with a girl he thought was 16. It was statutory rape. They had met online and the girl told him she was 16. He was charged because she was underage. The girl was upset that he was charged. I wish the media would distinguish between rape and statutory rape.

And I wish people wouldn't defend child rapists but we can't all get what we want. He knew her age when he got in the plane.

So many mistakes in your paragraph defending him.

If you actually read the reports he knew she was 12 before he got on a plane to fly into the UK to meet her. He knew her parents were away and she was alone. He knew what he was doing.

It's rape because a 12 year old child cannot consent to sex. As an adult male (not a kid as you claim) he knew what he wanted from the child. The child thought he loved her. He was 7 years older. No man I know of that age would consider a child as he did , he's a perverted man.

Not sure what you're on about here. We know he raped a 12 year old. Also we know a 12 year old is a child. Your point please?

See the comment I was replying to, where someone states that a 12 year old won’t be viewed as a child.

biscuitandcake · 31/07/2024 11:43

19 year old male = silly boy, poor child etc
12 year old female = "knew what she was doing"

It's just maths

First Rule of Misogyny, innit?

Never mind that she's 12, it's still somehow her fault.

Anyotherdude · 31/07/2024 12:10

You’re not being unreasonable, but will your boycott achieve anything? Better to write to the IOC or, better, start a petition to send them urging them to change in future…

He knew he was 12 when he had sex with her.

Raped her, to be specific.

He knew her real age at that point.

Why have you said he thought she was 16? It's irrelevant if he thought that at a previous stage.

He knew she was 12 and wanted to have sex with her regardless. So he did.

Stop minimising child rape.

The poster miminises and excuses child rape. Strange how some make excuses for child rapists and/or victim blame "she knew what she was doing", a 12 year old child yet happily excuse an adult male.

No wonder rape is under reported and conviction rates so low with rape excusers out there. Some will excuse men of most things. Its vile and sick.

Bloody hell! What is wrong with you?!

Disturbia81 · 01/08/2024 12:27

@AnotherEmma I just think anyone who defends raping a child is an evil person. I knew I'd be deleted for saying it but I still very much mean it.
