To be annoyed at neighbour honking horn all the time?

New neighbour is a taxi driver so works unsociable hours. This would be fine if they hadn’t set their car doors to honk whenever it’s locked - this only started a few weeks ago so definitely a setting has been changed on the car. It is constant throughout the day, never just one honk but often 4-6 in a row. This morning at 5am they honked the horn 4 times, opened and slammed the doors then honked 4 times again… it’s driving me mad and keeps waking me up. Does anyone know what I can do? I don’t want to cause trouble or be labelled a Karen but I was looking forward to a lie in today and now can’t get back to sleep!

I think it's fine to ask if he could switch the lock/horn thing off. I'm surprised anyone still has it on tbh, a bit like clicky texting! Just unnecessary noise pollution.

Maybe google the make and model and how to turn it off, so you have a solution if he pleads ignorance.

IvyCardamom · 27/07/2024 06:30

They're well in the wrong doing that & need telling. Depending on their attitude, you could speak to them direct or try putting a polite, anonymous note through, signed 'your neighbours'? Other than that, personally I've started using earplugs at night to keep my sanity, so that's always an option. The little silicone ones (Home Bargains do them), or maybe swim/travel ones if you want reusable. Hope things resolve one way or another & you get some sleep!

KimFan · 27/07/2024 06:38

Just mention it politely and ask if they could disable the honking - at least during the night and early hours.

Copperoliverbear · 27/07/2024 07:06

I'd mention it to him.

LlynTegid · 27/07/2024 07:09

Ask him. If you get a refusal or no action, then I think you should report him to the licensing authority alleging an unfit vehicle.

newhousenewhouse · 27/07/2024 07:19

Why use the term Karen Angry

Why use the term Karen Angry

Indeed. I automatically lose any sympathy for people who use that misogynistic term.

MrsClatterbuck · 27/07/2024 09:10

Not sure if they would do anything but you could report to police as it is an offence. Called indiscriminate use of a car horn. told by a previous boyfriend who was in the police

Arconialiving · 27/07/2024 09:38

Me too @ChockysChimichanga

Gliblet · 27/07/2024 09:48

Just ask! You don't even need to be stroppy about it, just a casual friendly 'Morning, any chance you could switch off the honking lock thing? Only at 5am it's a bit of a shock to the system. Thanks!'

It's only if they say no you need to start thinking about talking to the cab company if they work for one, licensing department or police or constructing elaborate noisy revenge plans for the nights when he's not working.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 27/07/2024 09:51

Speak to the neighbour but I wonder if it's a fault with a door sensor. My useless Ford Connect does it as it often thinks one of the rear doors is open when it isn't and beeps to alert me when I lock it.

Never. Ever. Ever. Confront anti social people directly. Yes, he's behaving in an anti social way.

Put a note under the windscreen politely saying that the street is requesting he adjusts settings.

Next move depends on his next move.

Allfur · 27/07/2024 09:55

It's the cars that make that awful ding ding sound when reversing that drive me mad, sounds just like an alarm clock and always wakes me up

dahlialove · 27/07/2024 10:04

Thanks all, I will pop a polite note through the door. Wanted to check I wasn’t overreacting! I also absolutely hate the term “Karen” and how it’s used to shut down women now, but if anyone raises anything on the local Facebook page it gets thrown around so a bit wary!

Because the horn is not sounding as an alarm that the car is being stolen (s.99(5)(a)) or at times of danger due to another moving vehicle on or near the road, it is a breach of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 for a stationary vehicle to sound its horn: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/99

Maybe if you drew this to the attention of the taxi driver steps might be taken to abate the problem, otherwise you could try to interest your local police.

Maybe you could just ask him before going in with regulation 2468.836 subsection b paragraph 1.1b or threatening police action
It might be looked upon more favourably 🤷🏻‍♂️

You hate the term Karen but still use it. Ffs just don’t!

ZiggyZowie · 05/03/2025 00:31

After 11 pm and before 7 am
I believe it's illegal to sound horn

ShadowStriker · 05/03/2025 03:56

I hate people honking their horns in the early hours of the morning. You need to stop him face to face and tell him clearly not to honk during this time.
