Raining when we are due to go on holiday

We are going to Pembrokeshire in Wales for a week next Saturday and so far the 10 day forecast is showing rain everyday except Thursday.

Feeling really down about it, I had a beach holiday in mind 😞

The weather forecast changes all the time x

PiggieWig · 26/07/2024 19:45

We had some really rainy holidays as kids. Where are you staying? Camping’s a bit of a chore but if you have solid walls you’ll still have fun :)

EnchantedElf · 26/07/2024 19:46

I grew up in Wales, beach days are still possible in the rain, just jumping in puddles rather than laying in the sun!

lightsandtunnels · 26/07/2024 19:47

Pack appropriately and try not to assume it'll rain every day. I'm sure there are plenty who wish they were off to Pembrokeshire tomorrow, even in the rain! I wish I was going; it's such a beautiful place. I love Solva and St David's - which has lots of shops and amazing ice cream that you can enjoy regardless of the weather. Have a fab time OP!

Crystalbabe · 26/07/2024 19:49

Don’t let a bit of water ruin your trip / mood. Most likely the weather forecast will change or it won’t rain every day. Sometimes the weather apps says rain but it could be an hour in the day or a few sprinkles here and there throughout the day.

Paisleyandburgandy · 26/07/2024 19:49

@PiggieWig
We are staying in a static caravan.

You were unreasonable to assume you’d be lying on a beach in hot weather in west Wales sorry.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 26/07/2024 19:52

We go to Pembrokeshire loads, or have done over the years. It often rains. This is no problem.

You need proper waterproofs. Not just jackets, but waterproof trousers, light ones for this time of year. Waterproof trousers are the game changer. Then you need waterproof shoes - not trainers and not wellies - waterproof walking shoes that support your foot. Light layers underneath. Then you are good to go whatever the weather - you can go to the beach, there are beautiful beaches, but you want a beach walk rather than lying on it.

Barafundle Bay for example is ideal for this.

Pembrokeshire has beautiful towns like Tenby to look around. There are castles you can visit happily in the rain, like Pembroke Castle as an obvious one.

You can take boat trips to the nearby islands such a Skomer Island. This is an amazing trips even at this time of year with no puffins. We did it when it was pouring on the way out, but it cleared up later and was amazing.

Do not be tempted by dry robes. They will not cut it. They are for changing on the beach. Wellies give you no foot support for walking. You want waterproof trousers, light waterproof jackets and walking shoes. Decathlon is your friend.

The forecast can change a lot in 8 days!! And sometimes when it shows a rain symbol, when you look in closer detail it actually only is rain between 4 and 5pm for example.

Shitandrun · 26/07/2024 20:00

Just had 4 very wet nights in Cornwall, and the bloody tent leaked!

I know lots of people will be on to say 'there's no such thing as bad weather, only poor clothing choice' or whatever the saying is, but I fucking hate the rain! I want balmy summer days spent lounging on the beach, wandering around in shorts and sandals, fresh summer mornings sipping coffee outside, and warm evenings sitting under the stars. Layering on plastic, noisy clothing and stomping around a drizzly beach in July is absolutely shit. Warm and sunny days on the English coast are just glorious, sadly we don't get enough of them.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 26/07/2024 20:04

We are going to Scotland for our holiday so not relying on anything weather wise!

Eminybob · 26/07/2024 20:08

I'm on the last day of a week in Devon. It has rained all but 2 days.

Tbf the 2 non rainy days have been glorious beach/pool days.

The others have been fine. We have done other stuff, theme parks, bowling, soft play, splashing at the beach in puddles.

It'll be fine 🙂

momager1 · 26/07/2024 21:08

I live in a very hot climate. It has rained off and on, and very cloudy for 2 days. We still did a beach run with the dogs, sat under cover during rain at a beach bar with them, having a margarita for me..beer for my husband, water for the mutts. there is always something to do. Tonight we were supposed to be going to a neighbour for a bbq, she cancelled as they do not like the weather.. instead my husband and I will enjoy a monopoly or skip bo night under the awning. Life is good. embrace the best of all of it.. grey skies, rain, sun, whatever.

UnctuousUnicorns · 26/07/2024 21:18

The weather forecast always "predicts" the worst possible scenario. We were in Shropshire at Easter; the forecast was for rain, every day. In the event, the rain was either overnight, or if during the day, five to ten minutes of light rain at most. We still got out and had a lovely time. Similar happened at our summer holiday in North Yorkshire. We had a great time there, too. The change of scenery is as much about it as anything else.

SmileLady · 26/07/2024 21:24

Don't expect the weather to be great wherever you go. Last year we went to Paris Disneyland at the end of July 2023. It poured with rain the whole weekend. One afternoon we got stranded on a wall by the bus stops outside the park due to the rain flooding the entire plaza.

The. We came back to the UK. The weather was terrible all summer. We were fed up so booked to go for a week to Mallorca in October. Guess what! It's rained most days. All the pics of the family are us in raincoats.

Then me ans DH went to Istanbul after Xmas
Weather was fine but again rainy. Then we thought let's go back "home' for Easter. So flew to Cyprus in April It rained so badly that my MIL house flooded and we had to go to a rental.

I give up. There is rain everywhere.

Edenmum2 · 26/07/2024 21:34

*I had a beach holiday in mind

In Wales?!

AppleKatie · 26/07/2024 21:34

Where in Pembrokeshire are you going? The forecast I’m looking at is nowhere near as bad as that!

Kitkat1523 · 26/07/2024 21:40

And this is why I could never have a summer holiday in the U.K….the anxiety over the weather….the disappointment when it pisses down

TinyGingerCat · 26/07/2024 21:43

Who books a holiday to Wales and expects sun? All the best UK holidays involve a uniform of wellies, shorts and a cagoule. If the sun comes out then it's a bonus.

CandiedPrincess · 26/07/2024 21:44

Just had a glorious week in the UK. Weather forecast wasn't great, but we've been on the beach most days and got fried. It's so hard to predict. Just enjoy your time away.

sleekcat · 26/07/2024 21:45

The weather forecast is constantly changing! It might be fine. Even if it does rain, it may be a fraction of the day.
When I went to Wales it rained quite a bit and we still had a really good time. One day we kayaked in a lake in the rain but it was still warm and enjoyable.

CandiedPrincess · 26/07/2024 21:45

Just had 4 very wet nights in Cornwall, and the bloody tent leaked!

@Shitandrun where have you been? I've been in Cornwall for 7 days and only had rain once!

JaceLancs · 26/07/2024 21:45

I am sure it will be better than you expect - convinced the forecasts are designed to make you expect the worse and be happier when it’s not as bad as they have said!!

turkeymuffin · 26/07/2024 21:48

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing is correct about the gear. Go to decathlon or mountain warehouse and get some proper stuff. It will be worth it.

Bring cards and games for the caravan

garlictwist · 26/07/2024 21:50

This is why I always book my holiday a few days before going and pick somewhere dry. If you don't have your heart set on certain accommodation and are happy to stay anywhere it works well.
