Raining when we are due to go on holiday

Paisleyandburgandy · 26/07/2024 19:43

We are going to Pembrokeshire in Wales for a week next Saturday and so far the 10 day forecast is showing rain everyday except Thursday.

Feeling really down about it, I had a beach holiday in mind 😞

Esme20 · 26/07/2024 21:52

You were very naive to expect a sunny beach holiday in West Wales!

justasking111 · 26/07/2024 21:53

Wales, Cornwall all in the western part of the country. Prevailing winds North westerlies traditionally higher rainfall, cooler temperatures

I don't know why people are still surprised by this

sandytoeswales · 26/07/2024 21:54

Honestly don't worry about it. I live in Pembs. It might be showers in the morning then by the afternoon it's lovely and warm. Take a beach tent so you can shelter in there when it showers. There are plenty of things to do in the rain as well. Folly farm is a must.

Clicheinaqashqai · 26/07/2024 21:55

I'm currently laying on the sofa of a caravan on the Welsh coast, with a sunburnt back after a full beautiful beach day, despite '50% chance of rain'.

turkeymuffin · 26/07/2024 21:48

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing is correct about the gear. Go to decathlon or mountain warehouse and get some proper stuff. It will be worth it.

Bring cards and games for the caravan

Thank you! I get quite evangelical about the gear 😂

Overtheatlantic · 26/07/2024 22:18

A static caravan in Wales for a summer holiday is never a good idea if you want fine weather. Get in some games and hot chocolate.

Shitandrun · 26/07/2024 22:19

@CandiedPrincess We were Saturday to Wednesday in Padstow. Every single day had rain ranging from a light shower to a deluge.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/07/2024 22:22

Aww mate, it can happen anywhere. We were in the South of France earlier this month. Gorgeous 30 degree sunshine all week, except the Saturday night when we had bought tickets for an outdoor music festival right on the sea front in a beautiful little seaside town - It tipped it down with rain all night. I have never been so wet.

Octavia64 · 26/07/2024 22:24

It rarely rains all day.

The trick is to watch the forecasts like a hawk and plan to get out in the gaps between the rain.

Have back up plans for inside things to do - we always used to take a bag of board games, cards, articulate etc.

If you have decent waterproofs and good shoes you can spend time in the rain as well,

Veteran of many rainy holidays here.

You were unreasonable to assume you’d be lying on a beach in hot weather in west Wales sorry.

This.

You will still have a great time though.

Nsky62 · 27/07/2024 00:49

I would never book a hol in wales hoping for sun, I prefer med temps, and a flight!
luckily I have family in Italy and Spain, warm 24c plus, hate the cold

wizzbitt · 27/07/2024 09:25

I'm sorry to hear this OP. The same thing happened to us last summer. We were in Whitesands, near St David's, which is beautiful. Except we were camping! We had gone to the same place the previous year and it was gloriously sunny! So we were VU to assume we would get the same weather. We had packed for all weathers though and made the most of it but yeah I was pissed off! So much so that I insisted that we go abroad this year (which we are and I can't bloody wait!).
However, we got two lovely days out where we did go to the beach and ate the giant ice creams. The weather can be changeable so fingers crossed you get some sunny days and thanks the gods for UNO!

DaemonMoon · 27/07/2024 09:28

We had a rainy holiday in Cornwall with a few sunny days. You could visit castles, wetsuits and body board, waterproofs and walk, meals out, sightseeing, beach in the evening. You have to snap out of it. Don't waste this time.

LlynTegid · 27/07/2024 09:30

It is the school holidays. It rains sometimes. It will be sunny in September for at least a week.

Plan accordingly for indoor activities or those that can easily be done in wet weather.

mrssquidink · 27/07/2024 09:37

On our last holiday in Pembrokeshire, I remember the tourist board’s first answer to “what to do if it’s raining?” Was “go in the sea, it’s all wet so it doesn’t matter!” Get some wetsuits and you’re good to go. More seriously, if you’re all ok swimmers, I’d recommend booking a course of surf lessons. We did it in Cornwall and I was so busy concentrating on trying to surf that I didn’t notice the rain. 😄

taxguru · 27/07/2024 09:40

If you were wanting a sunny beach holiday, then don't holiday in the UK. Go to the Med instead. The UK is well known for changing weather, and if you choose to holiday in the UK, you need to be prepared for all kinds of weather, at whatever time of year. There is never any guarantee of sun in the UK, Summers are notorious for changeable weather. It's why everyone turned their backs on UK seaside resorts in the 70s and 80s and started going on foreign holidays as soon as they became widely available and affordable.

Keeva2017 · 27/07/2024 09:41

Just come back from Carmarthen Bay. Was also disappointed with the rain I had but had a great holiday. Also the weather forecast changed every hour! Don’t lose hope.

Sorry OP, I would never have a UK based summer holiday now.

spottedinthewilds · 27/07/2024 09:43

CandiedPrincess · 26/07/2024 21:45

Just had 4 very wet nights in Cornwall, and the bloody tent leaked!

@Shitandrun where have you been? I've been in Cornwall for 7 days and only had rain once!

I live in Cornwall and it's rained all week. But next week is forecast to be dry.

PBandJ111 · 27/07/2024 10:02

I’d never book a summer uk holiday. Overpriced and shit weather.

Bjorkdidit · 27/07/2024 10:12

Esme20 · 26/07/2024 21:52

You were very naive to expect a sunny beach holiday in West Wales!

Or for the weather forecast to be any more accurate than tossing a coin this far in advance.

Heronwatcher · 27/07/2024 10:16

Yes for the end of the period the forecast could well change. And for the rest of the time it’s not going to rain all day, so there will be breaks when it will be glorious. I’d suggest taking a small beach tent and shelter so if it rains you can shelter if you need to, then come out again when it stops!

Paisleyandburgandy · 27/07/2024 10:33

Thanks tor all the comments. I’m really hoping the forecast will change nearer the time.

OP posts:
FatOaf · 27/07/2024 10:40

I've been on leave (at home) most of this week. The weather forecast last weekend said it was going to rain every day. It's been beautiful every day except Wednesday.

I wouldn't put any more trust in weather forecasts than in horoscopes.

Pottedpalm · 27/07/2024 10:45

How old are your children? The DTs used to complain it was too hot and sunny in France, much preferred Cornwall/Devon even in the rain. They would explore rock-pools for hours
