Opened a letter delivered to the wrong address (same house number, just the street behind us).
Ordinarily I'd have fessed up and opened it but
a) I accidentally tore the letter slightly while opening
b) It contains very sensitive information

DH thinks I should just pop the letter into their mailbox but I don't want them to think I was snooping! Plus they're likely to have cameras (a lot of people do) so they'll know it was me.
AIBU to be concerned about this? WWYD??

How do I get the letter back to them anonymously? Can I just re-seal it and put it in the mail with 'wrong address'? What if it takes too long to get back to them

Stick in a postbox and write "Delivered to wrong address" on the envelope?

FragmentedProvision · 25/07/2024 11:58

Just write on the front delivered to the wrong address and opened in error. They might be embarrassed but I'm sure they'd rather have the letter.

What will the post office do after this - redelivery?
I'm just a bit wary because the letter looks like it could be time sensitive.

They'd probably rather me not have opened it at all!
I'm new to the neighbourhood, I don't really want to get off on the wrong foot.

Put it back in the envelope, reseal and write opened in error and post in a post box. It will get there.

RaraRachael · 25/07/2024 12:10

It would get there OP. Much better than you risking outing yourself putting it through their letterbox if they have a door camera

accidentalmail · 25/07/2024 12:13

Thanks all
Now off to find an envelope 🤣

Why do you need an envelope? Just reseal the original? Tape it up?

SBHon · 25/07/2024 12:15

If I was your neighbour I’d rather have the letter than have it delayed until next week or even longer. Pop round and say you started opening it in error but then noticed the address and tell them you haven’t read it.

Oh yes I didn't think of taping it up!
Somehow I have it in my mind that it has to be pristine and just popped back into the letterbox

@FragmentedProvision @SBHon I don't know, having lived in lots of places neighbours can be pretty petty.
If they didn't have those door cameras id have just popped along and done it.

Door/CCTv. All sorts

What kind of neighbourhood do you live in if you think they're going to go batshit because you opened a letter in error? I'd go more batshit if I thought a neighbour had opened a time sensitive letter in error then stuck it back in the post box to take even longer to get to me.

Just pop a note on it saying sorry opened in error and put it through their letterbox. What do you think will happen?

There are loads of threads on here with neighbours going, erm 'batshit' at the most trivial of things. Even in naice neighbourhoods.

Your second sentence is irrelevant because
a) Bit unhinged to go crazy at the mere possibility of something. You can 'think' all you like, but you don't actually know.
b) It won't be directed at me . It could have been misdelivered to anybody or even opened at the post office.

Anyway I'm off to pop the letter into the postbox

If its time sensitive I think it's mean to put it back in the post just before the weekend and delay it a few more days. If I was really worried about being 'caught on camera' I'd just put a cap and glasses on and keep my head down and pop it through the door. On the basis whilst they might be batshit, they are more likely to just be worried about break ins or something

DatingDinosaur · 25/07/2024 18:48

Not that it matters now as it'll be in the post box but I really don't understand why you're so bothered about them possibly seeing you popping it through the letterbox. If it's time sensitive they'd probably be grateful that you took the time to do that.

The Post Office delivered it to the wrong address and it's not unreasonable to assume that post put through your own letterbox is meant for you.

A silly error by the post office and an innocent mistake by you. Nothing to be ashamed about.

Anyway, what's done is done.
