If the government can ban people from travelling outside the UK for FGM, why can't they ban this? It's absolutely appalling that clinics will destroy all records of a child's biological parent in this day and age. Yes, the child can potentially trace their parents through companies such as AncestryDNA, but there's no guarantee they'll be successful. It's a massive abuse of power.

Anonymous donation is all about what's best for the recipients and the donor, never the child. AIBU to think it should be illegal to travel abroad for this purpose?

A friend of mine came up against another dead end a few weeks ago while trying to trace her biological father (yes, it really is a friend and not me - it's an anonymous forum, I have no reason to lie!) She's devastated. It's really brought home to me how appalling it is that anyone would treat their own child like this.

Though if she hadn't treated her own child like that - in other words, taken that course of action - the child wouldn't exist.

That's a very circular ethical dilemma.

Congrats - you’ve found a comparison even more ridiculous than the FGM nonsense that started the thread!

It's not ridiculous. It is about whether if something eg FGM or CSA is illegal in the UK should it be illegal for a UK citizen to do it abroad.

As for how would anyone know, the same for all. The UK police would become aware somehow and investigate it as a crime. They would probably become aware because someone told them.

Yes, but if you have faith and you've tried all the medical options without success, that has to be down to God, yes?

Edited

That’s what many people believe. I can only answer for me. Personally I believe that if nothing medically enables me to have a biological child then I am being called towards other options such as adoption and that’s what’s meant to be my story. But we’re all different and some wouldn’t take that path.

So if someone reported a couple conceiving a baby abroad you would support the law that enabled the DNA testing of that baby? And if that couple didn’t tell anyone but simply announced a pregnancy then no one would know? Or are you suggesting birth DNA testing of all babies? Which could lead to a surge of births without medical intervention and people trying to have children “off the record?” as it were.

No but if someone was shown to have illegally used a clinic then I would support prosecution. Clinics keep records. And if it were illegal reputable clinics wouldnt orovide the service to UK citizens. Of course not everyone will get caught. Just like not everyone committing any other crime gets caught. Doesn't mean it shouldn't be illegal.

Would British legal system have any right to demand those details from a foreign clinic operating legally in their own country?

This. Surely you would then be in a situation similar to those who accompany relatives to Dignitas and similar? The UK police may question you etc but if you’ve broken no laws in the UK or in the country you committed the “crime” in then what can they realistically do?
