Travelled to friend's house for dinner, just strawberries for desert - AIBU to think it's low effort?

On the weekend my partner and I travelled to a friend's house for dinner. The journey was over an hour by train.

The main course was sausages with nice sides (potato salad, tomato salad, another salad). That was nice.

But desert was just strawberries with some pouring cream.

We had a nice time, but AIBU to feel that the desert was very low effort and unexciting, and should have been more exciting than strawberries given the journey?

When my friend came to mine, I did a 3-course meal, feeling I should make a big effort because of her long journey.

Maybe she fucked up her soufflé.

MissFancyDay · 24/07/2024 01:17

Strawberries are gorgeous at the moment.

I'm old they would have been such a luxury when I was young. Times have changed.

Monty27 · 24/07/2024 01:19

@Carefreebie it's dessert btw. Not desert. Couldn't resist.

anothervoice · 24/07/2024 01:19

Were the sausages because it was a barbecue? Even then, that’s a bit basic (unless you’re all pretending to be camping or something).

I would appreciate such a lovely dessert - healthier, in season and means my friend didn't lose hours preparing something so they could better enjoy our visit. A 5 tier cake or pavlova would not make me enjoy the evening more.

NCmybloodyfather · 24/07/2024 01:21

Jeez... 🤯

Chucklit · 24/07/2024 01:21

Could've been artic roll or jelly 🤷🏻‍♀️
Give yourself a shake, you're being pretentious

itsalwaysthesame · 24/07/2024 01:23

Sausage & salad is a strange combination, I'd be happy with anything though as long as I didn't have to cook, strawberries & cream is the perfect summer dessert

wrped · 24/07/2024 01:24

youre entitled and ungrateful

its not a competition

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 24/07/2024 01:27

Uh oh better tell Wimbledon their food choices aren't exciting enough...

Also this makes me want Strawberries and cream. Haven't had any this summer yet but I love it as a little treat after a meal!

Sparrowball · 24/07/2024 01:28

The OP complains about strawberries and cream and some posters complain about the fact she was given sausages, or that they were served with salad. We even have one asking were they cooked on a pan!

OP, you should contact Wimbledon and tell them to up their game.

Appledoughnut · 24/07/2024 01:28

It's strawberry season. They are delicious right now.

Snap!

I was typing as you posted, maybe we should all contact Wimbledon? I'm sure they'd understand the gravity of the situation. 🤣

Elphamouche · 24/07/2024 01:30

Wow. An hour isn’t that far!

Strawberries are a classic summer dessert.

You are absurdly ungrateful, as well as ignorant of the fact that many people don't want their lovely fresh fruit adulterated with a lot of unnecessary sugary rubbish.

If you were my guest, you wouldn't be invited again.

Galoop · 24/07/2024 01:33

I don't care what my friend serves as long as it's tasty and there's enough if it and most importantly they have wine! I agree strawberries are a bit lame, next time offer to bring dessert.

Can't be thought of as boring

Wahine24 · 24/07/2024 01:34

When your friend finds out about this thread, I don't think you are going to have to worry about going back again ......
You sound ungrateful and rude

Callmemel · 24/07/2024 01:35

I love a dinner party, with decent wines and curated menus, carefully selected cheeses etc. but this obviously wasn't that occasion!

For a casual summer gathering, sausages with fresh salads and strawberries and cream sounds fine really. The distance you travelled isn't really relevant.

BobbyBiscuits · 24/07/2024 01:35

Even if it was a BBQ, I'd hope for burgers, chicken etc as well as sausages and salad? Desserts don't bother me much and I love having fruit salad at someone's house, but usually a few fruit chopped up so a bit more effort.

But strawberries in season are lovely, and some people hate making puddings. If I was like that I'd ask guests to bring dessert. But overall it does sound somewhat low effort food wise.

They could've served cheeses if the pudding (ahem..and main) were modest?
Even from lidls, nothing fancy if there are fiscal issues on their side. That's no effort but still tasty.

Was there enough booze? Was it fun overall, good convo? Was the food you did have tasty and plentiful? Did they have good music? Were the hosts very present, and did everyone feel included? Was their home pleasant?

If yes to most of those I'd let them off. But just know to eat before I go round theirs next time!

NotAgainWilson · 24/07/2024 01:36

Good grief, if you had come to my house you would have got a freshly defrosted cheese cake from Iceland, with no shame or apologies. Or,

I would have suggested dinning out not to have too cook for you at that level of expectation.

Gosh, you really don't expect much!

Friendship shouldn't be conditional on your friend's cooking, entertaining and housekeeping abilities.

'Over an hour' on a train. that's hardly a long journey.

My friends are travelling for about 20 hours to visit me in a few weeks. I wonder what they're expecting to eat. 🤣

A state banquet with white tie dress code is mandatory in that case.

And have an orchestra for background music.
