Travelled to friend's house for dinner, just strawberries for desert - AIBU to think it's low effort?

On the weekend my partner and I travelled to a friend's house for dinner. The journey was over an hour by train.

The main course was sausages with nice sides (potato salad, tomato salad, another salad). That was nice.

But desert was just strawberries with some pouring cream.

We had a nice time, but AIBU to feel that the desert was very low effort and unexciting, and should have been more exciting than strawberries given the journey?

When my friend came to mine, I did a 3-course meal, feeling I should make a big effort because of her long journey.

I'm not meaning to say I ever hope for super impressive food. I just find a bowl of strawberries very unexciting.

Oh well, god forbid your friend should fail to provide you with an ‘exciting’ dessert

Monty27 · 24/07/2024 00:58

Did the invitation specify dinner @Carefreebie (noting username) or food and drinks?
Anyway an hour for a lovely evening with friends is nothing and food is a bonus. Did you get a maccie d on the way home?

SquidgeyB · 24/07/2024 00:59

Well I had friends over at the weekend and made sausages with salads and strawberries and cream.....feeling quite hurt at this post!!

TayceOnToast · 24/07/2024 00:59

This is hilarious

Maybe you’re pissed off because you’re putting too much effort in when you host, not the other way round

Next time your friends come round stick a pizza in the oven and crack open a bottle of wine. You’ll probably be more fun.

rosyvalentine · 24/07/2024 01:01

I'd be delighted with that dessert. I love strawberries and cream. Much better than some sugary or processed rubbish! And perfect for summer. But I'm not a big fan of sweet desserts to be fair.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/07/2024 01:01

Oh me, I have a friend coming round on Friday - DP is away so it will just be us “girls” and we’re going to order in pizza. I do have some olives at least.

Wonder if op was your visitor....😮

Summerflames · 24/07/2024 01:02

Fuck me, is this a wind up???

You sound so rude OP. If I travelled to see my mate and got given sandwiches I'd be happy, I'm there for the friendship not the food!

ninetieseyebrows · 24/07/2024 01:03

Dry and sandy were they?

What a shit friend you are, I really hope this is a wind up, if not @SquidgeyB - don't invite again

I'm curious as to what you'd find acceptable. Do you mean a cooked dessert such as Baked Alaska?

Don't feel hurt, everyone reading this thread would have enjoyed your hospitality and possibly even turned up with a nice bottle of something and we'd have had a lovely time.

You just can't please some people...

pinkdelight · 24/07/2024 01:09

It's a nice dessert and an hour is not a long journey. Christ, your life must be pretty empty if you're looking to a pudding for your excitement.

InsomniacA · 24/07/2024 01:09

Strawberries sound lively. Healthy and light and perfect for summer. I would love this.

Namechange546 · 24/07/2024 01:09

I'm torn on this one.

I'd rather have plain strawberries than strawberries with pouring cream.

But, strawberries, biscoff biscuits and a wee choc pot is the perfect desert for all occasions so I'd forgive your friend for stopping at the wrong shelf in the shop.

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 24/07/2024 01:10

Oh dear. She thought you were a friend and would be more interested in her company than criticusing her as an amatuer restaurant. Silly her.

Delphiniumandlupins · 24/07/2024 01:10

Were they good strawberries? That would be the clincher for me. Locally grown and handpicked and you're onto a winner (although I do find raspberries more consistent).

I truly truly TRULY hope your dinner host is on here.
You are the most entitled, ungrateful guest I’ve seen on Mumsnet for awhile - if this is even real.
Either your mother raised you wrong or you’ve forgotten everything she taught you.
Or worse, you were raised by Kris Jenner.
And I don’t even like strawberries.

Inspireme2 · 24/07/2024 01:12

Some people like light simple dessert.
Did you take a bottle of wine or something towards the meal?
Ungrateful.
I love simple food, meals.

ThePoshUns · 24/07/2024 01:13

I'd be more than happy with strawberries and cream.
What a poor version of a friend you are.

MissFancyDay · 24/07/2024 01:13

How very mean spirited.

Waffle78 · 24/07/2024 01:14

I love strawberries and cream. Would rather have that than a fattening sugary dessert and end up with indigestion. Maybe she's watching her weight. If she's done salad she probably is.

Also was it Cumberland sausage you had? I love proper Cumberland sausage from an independent butchers.

Abitofalark · 24/07/2024 01:14

Your friend may not be a confident cook or host so adapt your expectations and enjoy the company and the simpler fare in the spirit of friendship. You'll survive!

Anyway, I think strawberries count as sufficiently 'exciting' as they tend to come around only once a year, about now and are a fresh and beautiful symbol of summer, along with the luxurious indulgence of cream.

AzureSheep · 24/07/2024 01:16

I don’t understand your attitude - you have a friend you’ll travel an hour for dinner with, but you’re judging them for not providing the perfect dessert? What does the food matter if you’re going to catch up with a good friend?

You’re being completely unreasonable.

if she’d crushed up some meringue and called it Eton mess would that have made you feel better? 🙄

anothervoice · 24/07/2024 01:16

What do you mean she gave you sausages?

Do you mean fried sausages from a pan? She gave you that for dinner?

Monty27 · 24/07/2024 01:16

@Carefreebie did you contribute anything? Apart from your divine presence of course? Coulda brought a homemade cheesecake, flowers and wine. "On the weekend."
