Travelled to friend's house for dinner, just strawberries for desert - AIBU to think it's low effort?

On the weekend my partner and I travelled to a friend's house for dinner. The journey was over an hour by train.

The main course was sausages with nice sides (potato salad, tomato salad, another salad). That was nice.

But desert was just strawberries with some pouring cream.

We had a nice time, but AIBU to feel that the desert was very low effort and unexciting, and should have been more exciting than strawberries given the journey?

When my friend came to mine, I did a 3-course meal, feeling I should make a big effort because of her long journey.

This thread made me get strawberries and cream yesterday. Kids were delighted.

Going to serve it to guests for pudding today too 😁

Valhalla2507 · 27/07/2024 11:42

Strawberries on their own, as your title suggested. Yes weird.
Strawberries with cream. Very nice desert.

MamaAgainAt40 · 27/07/2024 11:56

Wow I think you're being really judgemental and unreasonable, and rather shallow. Your friend went to the effort of buying and preparing food to share with you, her "friend", and you are judging her like you're on an episode of come dine with me. Surely you're there to see and spend quality time with your friend, not mark her on her catering?? I personally would love that dinner, and appreciate the opportunity to share it with someone I loved.

Carebearsonmybed · 27/07/2024 11:58

I'd be glad of something in season and not UHP.

What did you serve as dessert?

What did you want/expect?

Might be useful learning how to spell dessert before expecting one.

Bertsmum22 · 27/07/2024 13:31

When we go to friends for dinner we never have dessert really so I’d be fine with that. You could have taken dessert as I also often do. You sound hard work!!

74Violette · 27/07/2024 13:34

Yeah the main and dessert are weird choices and low effort but not a big deal really.

Epicaricacy · 27/07/2024 13:37

Such a shame this silly thread will put some people off and stop them inviting friends and serving a perfectly fine lunch.

Strawberries, fruit salad.... of course it's a normal dessert?

Would you prefer them drenched in cognac and have them flambe or something? 😂

chattyness · 27/07/2024 13:48

I love strawberries and cream they are expensive, low effort yes but delicious all the same I'd have been delighted to have been offered them.
Maybe your friend wanted to focus on spending time with you rather than fannying around in the kitchen all night.
You made an extra effort when you hosted, but that's your way of doing things, you can't expect everyone to do as you want them to, maybe she just wasn't up to it on the day and did her best. You had a nice time together isn't that what really matters ?

BooksAndFootie · 27/07/2024 13:59

How can you rate your friendship based on the food you’re offered? Sounds to me that you have some issues here - not normal behaviour.

ramsayboltonshounds · 27/07/2024 14:01

And here's me thinking you went to friends houses to erm, see your friends. Didn't realise you had to be a Michelin starred chef and knock up a banquet every time they came. Silly me.

mbosnz · 27/07/2024 14:09

Her effort sounds better than your manners.

Bustedpoon · 27/07/2024 14:11

ungrateful shitehawk

Yes. What on earth is wrong with strawberries and cream for pudding? They are lovely. Also travelling an hour each way is not that long, or far.

I sincerely hope the hostess is not on facebook and reads this, she would be quite hurt.

Epicaricacy · 27/07/2024 14:21

Silly friend, she should have put an infusion instead of cream, and voila! Michelin star food. (Arpege is a 3 stars)
Ramsay (3 stars) adds pistachios.

Yes OP, you are clearly ridiculous. And a bit ignorant.

I’d have been more excited over the strawberries and cream than sausages and salad

purplehair1 · 27/07/2024 14:56

Flipping heck I absolutely love strawberries and cream, would be delighted to have that as a dessert. Surely it’s about the deliciousness not about the performative effort which went into making of it. I wouldn’t ever invite you to dinner!

Normallynumb · 27/07/2024 15:23

Assuming this is a wind up post as OP has not returned
You are judgement and ungrateful
You went for your friends company, an hour isn't a long journey
She served up a summer meal when strawberries are peak season
What gastronomic delights do you serve?
YABU obviously.

PointsSouth · 27/07/2024 15:50

This is really not difficult. There's a well-known convention that covers it.

Journey Time Dessert
10 minutes Mr Kipling Country Slice (1)
20 minutes Del Monte fruit salad and evaporated milk
30 minutes That tinned steam pudding no one likes
45 minutes Strawberries and cream
1 hour M&S Bread and Butter Pudding
1.5 hours Home made trifle (no sherry)
2 hours Home made trifle (sherry)
More than 2 hours Mille Feuille, made from scratch, with liqueurs.

As we can see, the OP's friend was a good quarter of an hour off the running, and probably should be cancelled as a hostess.

Hereforthekicks · 27/07/2024 15:52

Bonkers

Geiyotue · 24/07/2024 00:46

I think sausages and salad sounds low effort as well. I'd have been disappointed with the whole meal!

You think THREE different salads is low-effort? What is it that you’re after? 😂

Scottsy200 · 27/07/2024 16:03

Glad you aren’t my friend Judgy McJudgerson

CrayonCritic5 · 27/07/2024 16:06

If I was going to a friend’s for dinner I would be the one providing desert. And probably some drinks too!

Absolutely!
