Travelled to friend's house for dinner, just strawberries for desert - AIBU to think it's low effort?

On the weekend my partner and I travelled to a friend's house for dinner. The journey was over an hour by train.

The main course was sausages with nice sides (potato salad, tomato salad, another salad). That was nice.

But desert was just strawberries with some pouring cream.

We had a nice time, but AIBU to feel that the desert was very low effort and unexciting, and should have been more exciting than strawberries given the journey?

When my friend came to mine, I did a 3-course meal, feeling I should make a big effort because of her long journey.

You travelled a whole hour? To see people you like? Who prepared a two course meal for you? And both courses were nice?

The BASTARDS. Go No Contact immediately.

😂😂😂 God I love Mumsnet at times. Thanks for the laughs @TinDogTavern

Strawberries and cream is a classic at this time of year! Strawberries are at their best right now - can't get enough of them.

But that aside - surely you are there to spend time with your friends and not to judge whether their food was worthy of you?

Instead of being all judgmental why not just enjoy the fact you were in company (I assume) of people you like and you didn't need to cook.

Sausages and Salad? Are people impressed by that. There's cooking and there's that. That's what I would do for my kids as a lazy throw anything together lunch on a basic normal day. Nothing special at all about that. And the strawberries and cream are cheap and even worse effort. I guess if you had a nice time then look at that. But tbh that's an embarrassing effort to host people with .

@Yousaidwhatagain yeah, of course you prepare 3 different types of salad, as a throw together lunch for your kids

Mo one said they wee 'impressed' by it, but many of us have said it's a perfectly fine dinner, which it is.

strawberries aren't cheap - it's far cheaper to buy a supermarket pudding.

its MOT an embarrassing effort, but many on MN don't understand friendship. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Single cream poured over fruit or any dessert is rubbish, it's so tasteless...buy double, whip it up until thick, add a little vanilla, a small amount of sugar or some brandy....so much nicer.

What kind of salad do you have with the sausages?

id like to try this as a low carb dinner but sausages with lettuce or usual salad type stuff sounds rank.

Greek dill lemon potato salad, cous cous salad, chick pea salad, roasted Mediterranean veg salad, all with fresh herbs and great dressings; something like a honey, lemon, mustard dressing would go well with sausages.

OkapiSandwichAndARoastEgg · 24/07/2024 11:40

Pom Bears would have been nice.

Atichen · 24/07/2024 11:43

We had a friend round last night... desert was a frozen pie from tesco served in the tin.... notveven on a plate... super low effort (no need to wash straberrys/de head, no cream etc ) ... but they only live a few streets over so I assume that's acceptable

I think strawberries are a real treat and would love strawberries and cream for dessert! Simple, elegant and delicious.

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 24/07/2024 11:47

Did they bring anything with them when they came to yours? Did you tell them not to because you love hosting elaborately? It’s quite common in some circles to bring dessert so perhaps they expected you to.

I always put on an impressive spread. People are grateful. They like to host in return but many people aren’t good at or interested in cooking, and I couldn’t care less if I get a pasta bake and a few bars of nice chocolate on the table for pud.

I once went to dinner at my friends and she served poached pear for dessert. It had taken us 78 minutes to get there because a lorry had shed its load on the M6. Which I suppose wasn't my friends fault. But still.

I think poached pears are a real treat and would be delighted 😂 what do people have against fruit for dessert?!

Yeah, that post baffled me as well 😂

I think you sound really ungrateful

@Freakwave897 yes they would, but they're not low carb.

@LuckySantangelo35

Mostly I have pasta type bowl with a lot of 'green' in the base (usually rocket & watercress) with cucumber, pepper 🫑, radish, some kind of small, on the vine, tomatoes (not too many as higher in carbs) some olive oil & ground pepper, with a selection of gherkins, pickled onions, pickled cauli and occasionally as a treat (go me 🤣🤣) beetroot. Topped with cubed cheese and sausages sliced (if they make it that far!!) oh & Heinz or Hellman's vegan 'mayo' or a dip type thing.

i have it down to a fine Art.

Pinkelephant66 · 24/07/2024 11:51

It’s having a friend over for dinner, not Come Dine With Me

Freakwave897 · 24/07/2024 11:53

yes they would, but they're not low carb

A roasted Mediterranean veg salad is not low carb?

Who says they all have to be low carb anyway?

YABU, an hour isn't that long to travel. If you lived in London it can take that long just to get across the city. It's nice you got to spend time with friends, and fresh strawberries with cream is a lovely dessert.

Iwasafool · 24/07/2024 11:57

Carefreebie · 24/07/2024 00:54

I'm not meaning to say I ever hope for super impressive food. I just find a bowl of strawberries very unexciting.

We are all different, I can't think of anything nicer than a bowl of strawberries and cream but if you are disappointed it's a shame. Maybe she's like me?

BeachParty · 24/07/2024 11:03

What on earth's wrong with poached pears?!
Sounds lovely.
What dessert is acceptable for a 78 minute trip that involved a pesky lorry?
Also what dessert for a 40 minute trip? 30?
We need some kind of spreadsheet for travel timings and acceptable sweet treats.
This thread's mad 😂

If you're just nipping next door expect no more than a half empty jar of nutella and a spoon.

ManchesterLu · 24/07/2024 12:07

Surely you go to see your friends, that being the main purpose, and the meal is just a bonus? It sounds perfectly fine to me, and you sound ungrateful.

To be fair, that's pretty much my ideal meal haha.

willWillSmithsmith · 24/07/2024 12:08

Not much of a friend are you? Strawberries and cream sounds like a lovely dessert to me. Maybe she should have served you Death by Chocolate?

Lifeomars · 24/07/2024 12:12

I am always just so happy and grateful if someone makes food of any description for me. Lovely not to have to shop cook, serve and clear up a meal. Wouldn't care if they had sent out for a MacDonalds and as for strawberries and cream, it is one of my favourites and so summery.

I mean I'd be very happy with that I'm.a chocolate fiend :)

Skyrainlight · 24/07/2024 12:13

I would hate to have you around for dinner. Judgmental much?
