Travelled to friend's house for dinner, just strawberries for desert - AIBU to think it's low effort?

On the weekend my partner and I travelled to a friend's house for dinner. The journey was over an hour by train.

The main course was sausages with nice sides (potato salad, tomato salad, another salad). That was nice.

But desert was just strawberries with some pouring cream.

We had a nice time, but AIBU to feel that the desert was very low effort and unexciting, and should have been more exciting than strawberries given the journey?

When my friend came to mine, I did a 3-course meal, feeling I should make a big effort because of her long journey.

So the longer the journey, the more elaborate the dessert required?

Londonrach1 · 24/07/2024 09:36

Perfect desert. Yabu. It's what we always go as a family and that my parents and sister for guests. No one ever complained. Glad you not my friend. Id have done pizza and picky bits for main meal. Easy so you can spend longer with friends and chatting

Flumpie59 · 24/07/2024 09:36

It's their house, you were guests of theirs.

Their house is not a restaurant or cafe.

Be grateful for what you got instead of whining like a 2 year old.

I'd much rather have real food like strawberries than a shop bought desert full of crap thank you

Congratulations to you on being a superior human being

Wow. DH always tells me I stress too much about dinner for guests and they are coming for the company not for super impressive food.

Sounds like in some cases it really is all about the super impressive food 🤷‍♀️

@minipie

your DH is right!!

FRIENDS for the company!!

judgemental twats for a critique of the meal.

soundsys · 24/07/2024 09:38

Strawberries and cream is a great summer dessert! I'd be very happy with that

(I thought you were going to say JUST strawberries - no cream - and then I might have agreed with you a bit more 😁)

@Comedycook

there was nothing wrong with what @midgetastic said!!

Imnotarestaurant · 24/07/2024 09:40

We chose to have strawberries and cream as one of our desserts at our wedding because I think perfectly ripe, in season English strawberries are delicious 😋

Flumpie59 · 24/07/2024 09:40

''a bowl of strawberries very unexciting'' just like you! What a bore! Grow up!

Comedycook · 24/07/2024 09:40

I actually really dislike strawberries...they are probably one of my least favourite fruits. Raspberries are far nicer than strawberries imo. As for cream...I never seen the appeal...ice cream would be marginally better.

Orders76 · 24/07/2024 00:47

That sounds like a weird thing to pick on. Strawberries and cream are expensive and delicious, as well as being low processing.
Personally I visit friends if I want, and don't expect to be fed in relation to journey,!

@Orders76

🤣maybe there should be a set menu that gets 'fancier' for every half hour travelled!!

Right that's it. I'm giving up on having friends altogether. Thank you OP you have freed me.

Flumpie59 · 24/07/2024 09:41

You ARE being unreasonable.

listsandbudgets · 24/07/2024 09:41

YABU, I often serve berries, cream / ice cream and meringue for pudding. I really hope my friends don't forget away thinking I'm selfish and can't be bothered making an effort for them.

Feel like I've been letting them all down now never occurred to me until now they'd be going away and telling everyone "lists is rubbish.. couldn't even be bothered to make a crumble and whip up some custard.. lazy cow"

Presumably you went to see your friend no to judge her cookery skills

Cyclebabble · 24/07/2024 09:41

Maybe we have different standards, but I would have loved a bowl of strawberries. At this time of year British strawberries can still be found and they are very tasty. Interestingly I was at a local Michelin starred restaurant at the weekend and they were (rightly) on the menu there.

The addition of meringue is a game changer though

That's a bit crap imo...I'd be quite disappointed. You can buy such good quality desserts nowadays in the supermarkets. Lovely lemon tarts, cheesecakes, tiramisu....she didn't have to actually make anything necessarily

But surely you don’t think that just because your preference is a shop bought desert it’s ‘a bit crap’ if someone chooses something different! OP’s friend probably thought - like many on this thread - that ripe strawberries and cream was a much nicer option.

Its obviously fine to have your own preferences but to say your friends are a bit crap because they had a different idea about what constitutes a nice dessert when they’re cooking you a meal is an insane degree of entitlement!

Comedycook · 24/07/2024 09:42

Well it would be if I didn't buy them ready made .. low effort all the way here!!

Yousaidwhatagain · 24/07/2024 09:45

Sausages and Salad? Are people impressed by that. There's cooking and there's that. That's what I would do for my kids as a lazy throw anything together lunch on a basic normal day. Nothing special at all about that. And the strawberries and cream are cheap and even worse effort. I guess if you had a nice time then look at that. But tbh that's an embarrassing effort to host people with .

HungryWombat · 24/07/2024 09:45

Hmm I'd rather fresh good strawberries (a treat! Half the year they're imported and not so nice) than a fake processed dessert from the supermarket personally.

KatiesMumWoof · 24/07/2024 09:45

SquidgeyB · 24/07/2024 00:59

Well I had friends over at the weekend and made sausages with salads and strawberries and cream.....feeling quite hurt at this post!!

@SquidgeyB

im not sure if you're messing about or serious?? If you're serious did the tests come on the train??

Maddy70 · 24/07/2024 09:45

I travelled over an hour to bring paracetamol for my friend. Its about being with your friend. ?

Incidentally straberroes and cream is the best dessert for summer. I would be a little surprised at sausage as a main but also wouldn't give it a second thought

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 24/07/2024 08:07

I really want strawberries and cream now

me too! op yabu and ungrateful you go for the company not a 5 course gourmet meal I think it sounds like a lovely meal anyway.

I don’t go to friends’ houses to be impressed by their culinary prowess. I like them for who they are as people, not for their kitchen skills or the complexity of their menus.

Luckily this thread shows I am in the majority but there are some proper weirdos on here acting like it’s an insult if someone hadn’t spent three hours slaving in the kitchen in return for being graced by their presence.
