Day out in car with friends’ American Bully?

WildGreenHedgehog · 23/07/2024 20:29

My friend has adopted an American Bully recently and is and another friend are going down to Brighton on Friday for a day out and she’s messaged us saying she’s bringing the dog. It isn’t one of those XL types but I’m still concerned about getting in the car with a dangerous dog I don’t know (and she doesn’t know really) incase it gets territorial. I don’t know whether to say anything in case she thinks I’m being a wet lettuce?

It's an adopted dog, who knows what its history is?
I love dogs but in this scenario I would only feel comfortable if the dog was secured in the boot.

I'm asking the original poster if it's because it's bulldog bare in mind the amount of different breeds their are. The press seem to always announce bully type dog but that could mean a french bulldog to xl bully. Which means they are all being branded with a bully type killing machine label which is very unfair. Would the original poster be thinking the same thing if it was a labradoodle?

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 23/07/2024 22:54

OP says it’s an American Bully. They were all bred from pit bulls. I wouldn’t be going near any of them.

Can I ask where you got that information from? That they was ALL bred from pitbulls?

TrixieFatell · 23/07/2024 23:12

I don't like big dogs so I don't go near them. I don't need to explain myself and neither do you.

watchuswreckthemic · 23/07/2024 23:15

I'm away in a holiday location that is dog friendly. I've seen so many dogs out today in hot weather, dragged along on hot pavements who are over heating.
It's not fair on the dog at all, let alone the rest of it

@Dreamingofabeautifulday OP says it's an American bully

I can read. I'm asking if it's because it's a bulldog breed or would they be questioning it if it's a different breed like a westie or pug? I'm asking as iv personally had hate from having a bulldog myself since everything happening with the xl bully

Smidgers · 23/07/2024 23:16

If it’s a banned breed does she have paperwork for it? Even in a car these dogs need to be muzzled if it is.

Personally I wouldn’t be going OP. I don’t like these dogs or any remotely like them, that’s a personal choice though.

Yawn

What a thought provoking response.

Jollylollylee · 23/07/2024 23:25

Irrespective of the breed did your friend ASK you before she decided she was bringing her dog along? If not, That’s super rude to assume she can bring her dog. as a op said it changes the vibe of the trip and might limit where you can go.

It would be a no from me, firstly don’t want a big dog stinking out my car with its farts or potentially having an accident. Secondly, I wouldn’t be comfortable that this new dog is going to be ok with the journey.

I'd imagine from the United kennel club information.

Did she adopt the dog, or 'adopt' the dog from Gumtree?

Screamingabdabz · 23/07/2024 23:27

Nope. I wouldn’t travel in the back seat of a car with any animal that could kill you if it chose to. Fuck that.

KenAdams · 23/07/2024 23:29

WinterMorn · 23/07/2024 20:36

Why have you immediately decided this dog is dangerous?

Well that's the whole point. The dog is unfamiliar to her and the owner and is a known aggressive breed that's been given up by a previous owner. Most attacks have happened when the dog hadn't been with the owner long so I share OP's concerns.

Jollylollylee · 23/07/2024 23:30

I didn't realise they looked like that. Ugh No definitely not. So many reasons why it’s a definite No

OP hope you speak up if you’re not comfortable which it seems you’re not .

If you don’t she’ll assume everyone is OK and insist on bringing her dog to everything from now on.

You don’t even know if it’s going to be well behaved in any restaurants or cafes you go into!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 23/07/2024 23:31

Own it OP… clearly you aren’t comfortable so use your words and tell her.

Really don’t know why you posted here? There isn’t any advice anyone can give you that doesn’t end with don’t get in the car. You are either more worried about what your friend thinks of you or getting into a car with this dog. Which one is it?

*I’ve purposely left out any thoughts on the dog itself

MeganM3 · 23/07/2024 23:32

Could be a gorgeous gentle Ddog, but you're not comfortable so don't put yourself in that situation.

I love dogs but must admit the smell of one in a warm car for a long journey would be a no from me. I'd just rather not. Hopefully she transports him with a safety harness or similar.

WinterMorn · 23/07/2024 23:32

Yet.…..there is no evidence from the OP’s post that the dog is dangerous. If it’s come from a reputable rescue, there will have been temperament testing conducted. If she doesn’t want to go, she should just say so!

As opposed to waiting until it attacks? The friend only recently adopted the dog so she doesn’t really know the dog yet.

The vast majority of dogs do not attack people.

Yes that's for an American bulldog she said all bully type dogs? Which would include the French, the English bulldog and the other bulldogs that don't come from pitbulls. What I'm trying to get at is that not every bully is a xl bulldog and dangerous. I have a old man of an 11year old English bulldog down stairs fast of the one you see on the Churchill adverts he sleeps most of the days away we have had him from 12 weeks old I now have to explain that yes i have a english bulldog but that doesn't mean hes dangerous because all they hear is bulldog not English bulldog which is breed from a alaunt. Xx

Nevermind the dog. I wouldn't trust the friend.

She's only recently adopted the dog, therefore I'd assume she's not had it long enough to get used to its temperament in different situations.

Is she a new dog owner, or does she have lots of experience? She's very casual about taking it on a long car trip, a long day out with its new owners friends, and saying Oh it can go on the back seat. That sounds like a very long day out for a new dog. That suggests to me that she doesn't have much experience. If she did, that might be a different matter because you could be confident that she knew what she was doing and how to control the dog.

As it is, I wouldn't be surprised if she hasn't thought this through and I'd be asking her how she secures the dog in the car normally.

I'm confused about who is driving, you, the friend or another friend? If dog owner is not the driver, I'd be voicing concerns to the actual driver. I doubt if they will be thrilled.

If the friend won't be moved, I'd probably Get the train.

MustBeGinOclock · 24/07/2024 00:03

You can say your not going as you are not so comfortable sat next to a dog neither of you know well enough just yet - but have a lovely time away!
