Day out in car with friends’ American Bully?

WildGreenHedgehog · 23/07/2024 20:29

My friend has adopted an American Bully recently and is and another friend are going down to Brighton on Friday for a day out and she’s messaged us saying she’s bringing the dog. It isn’t one of those XL types but I’m still concerned about getting in the car with a dangerous dog I don’t know (and she doesn’t know really) incase it gets territorial. I don’t know whether to say anything in case she thinks I’m being a wet lettuce?
AIBU?

I’d be more concerned about being in the front seat and being hit by an unsecured dog in an accident.

If you’re scared, you’re scared OP. Even if everyone here says you are being unreasonable (obviously not going to happen, this is mn) it wouldn’t help you feel less scared.

InNeedOfAWin · 23/07/2024 21:20

Don’t do it - their farts are like death.

Marblessolveeverything · 23/07/2024 21:35

All dogs should be properly secured depending on where you are it may be the law. I wouldn't be driving a non known dog. That's really irresponsible and dangerous. You need to assess a dog for a decent period while secured.

Choochoo21 · 23/07/2024 21:53

American bulldogs are fine.
You don’t get many aggressive ones.

I would be more concerned about it being in the car loose, they can be quite big and may cause an accident.

A long car journey and day out in Brighton seems too much for a newly adopted dog.

Unless your friend is a gangster /drug dealer chances are they are a decent human being with a decent ddog... Yabu. And a bit dramatic..
Unless she is letting it do the driving...

Not everyone likes being cooped up in a small place with a nasty dirty smelly unhygienic animal. 'Ddog' FGS.

Sunhatweather · 23/07/2024 21:58

Nope to sitting beside any unknown dog. My two are terrible travellers and I’d be drowning in drool or, more likely, a poonami. Dont take that risk 🤢

Don’t do it - their farts are like death.

It would only have to try to lick me and I'd be shouting 'PULL OVER! LET ME OUT', only I wouldn't have got in there. The car would stink of dog and so would I if I was fool enough to agree to to it, which I'm not.

Why have you immediately decided this dog is dangerous?

Because it’s safer to assume that it is dangerous than find out the hard way. To look at it another way, most bulls. On farms are docile but you should never trust one. My friend found that out the hard way!

Galoop · 23/07/2024 22:17

Any breed would be a no from me, how gross sitting in the back-seat woth dog smell, especially after the wet beach. And the slobber and bad breath 🤢

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 23/07/2024 22:21

Well personally I wouldn't ever travel in a vehicle with an animal. Nasty.

Yawn

Mmhmmn · 23/07/2024 22:23

Do you value your life?

Yes - don’t risk get in a car with a bully

No - get in a car with a bully

My opinion.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 23/07/2024 22:27

God, the drama. Drive yourself OP.

Re read. The dog is adopted recently. Neither knows the dog’s temperament. Some people are just clueless. Plus your bar for a decent human being is pretty high!

hattie43 · 23/07/2024 22:31

IME American bullies are boisterous not dangerous

Dweetfidilove · 23/07/2024 22:34

No thanks. I'll meet you there.

Dreamingofabeautifulday · 23/07/2024 22:36

Can I ask why you presume it's a dangerous dog is it because it's a bulldog?

You say bully? Are you aware of how many different breeds of bulldogs their is? Why are they all to be in one category?

Maddy70 · 23/07/2024 22:38

Just say you get car sick and the smell of dog breath in the car will trigger you

TizerorFizz · 23/07/2024 22:41

An American Bully is not an English Bulldog. Adopted dogs might have been mistreated. You simply don’t know their temperament - yet. I have to say I don’t know anyone who would adopt a dog like this. I would decline the offer of a lift until I knew the dog was ok. Doesn’t sound like fun,

Because it is dangerous. If it decides to kill or seriously injure you, it can do that quite easily, unlike most other breeds of dog. And also because of its genetics, it’s more likely than most other breeds to decide it wants to.

It's an adopted dog, who knows what its history is?
I love dogs but in this scenario I would only feel comfortable if the dog was secured in the boot.

Have you owned one the several breeds of bulldogs then to know that all of the different breeds are killing machines?

Kai125 · 23/07/2024 22:48

If I was going on a day out with friends and was then told they were bringing their dog, I'd be pissed off not matter what breed!

A huge difference in dynamics between having a doggy day out and a day out with mates.

You're restricted where you can go, some beaches won't allow dogs. You're restricted where you can eat and drink.

Dependent on the weather you may not be able to go out at all if it's too hot.

It's like going on a mate's day out and someone says they're bringing their toddler! Completely different day out than the one I would be expecting.

Definitely a no from me and I love dogs.

Allfur · 23/07/2024 22:49

I'm sure they wouldn't hurt a fly either
