to quietly correct this?

I want to preface this with saying at this juncture I have not uttered a word.

Through my DDs I am friendly with one of the school mums (sit with her at parties, message about the kids, take them to soft play together).
She’s recently set up a business…let’s call it The Happy Faces but on all her promotional things she’s put an apostrophe in faces so the the business is called “The Happy Face’s”…

I suppose I’m asking if anyone would point this out to her? The type of business it is lends itself to correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. Mine is by no means perfect btw and I’m asking more from the point of view that she is absolutely lovely and i would like to see her succeed and wouldn’t want people to be put off the business by incorrect punctuation in the business name.

I would tell her. Just say something like "Oh no, have you noticed this error?"

Gracelet · 23/07/2024 10:47

That gives her the chance to save face by framing it as a mistake

RishiIsACuntWaffle · 23/07/2024 10:47

Yes because it could be costing her business.

Rhythmisadancer · 23/07/2024 10:49

I did this for someone once - it was on the launch page of her website which someone else had set up for her, but she evidently hadn't looked at - she was immensely grateful and would have been mortified if it had stayed that way any longer

blackcherryconserve · 23/07/2024 10:50

I'd tell her. It would certainly put me off any business that gets something like punctuation so wrong.

LadyChilli · 23/07/2024 10:50

Suggests it was an autocorrect fail rather than her grammar.

purpleme12 · 23/07/2024 10:50

Oh god this is so awkward

It really really grates on me and I don't buy from businesses who can't get their name right with apostrophes

thursdaymurderclub · 23/07/2024 10:50

ofcourse tell her! she are friends enough that you can be polite to point it out and its her business and it might be having a negative effect on it due to the error

AttackMeleys · 23/07/2024 10:51

I think I would very gently tell her, and allow her the space to save face - "It took me a while to notice the typo in your business name, but now I can't unsee it, have you noticed? I'm sorry to mention it I don't want to sound like a pedant, but I know how easy it is to make mistakes like this and you're my friend and it would be a shame if it put people off of your fabulous business" etc.

All businesses or just one where that sort of attention to detail is required?

peachgreen · 23/07/2024 10:53

Christ no. If she was one of your best friends then yes, but she’s just a mum you’re friendly with and doing this will just make things awkward.

ranchdressing · 23/07/2024 10:53

You have to shit sandwich it!

Hey friend,
Your website/leaflet/instagram page looks so fantastic! Excited for you.
Did you notice a small typo? It should be faces not face's! Just thought I'd point it out in case you hadn't seen! Autocorrect is always adding them in for me uneccesarily...
Hope everything is going well with it

CelesteCunningham · 23/07/2024 10:53

Oh god that's a tricky one to get right. Agree it needs to be changed as it doesn't look good for the business. If it was a physical sign you could take the "Oh no, your sign writer got it wrong, when are they coming back" but harder if it's everywhere on social media etc.

Cheeesus · 23/07/2024 10:54

Kta7 · 23/07/2024 10:52

Are there a many businesses where attention to detail isn’t needed? Whatever it is you need them to turn up on time, charge the right amount etc?

dutysuite · 23/07/2024 10:54

I’d want to know.

Imworriedagain · 23/07/2024 10:55

Definitely tell her as it will only help her in the long run.

CointreauVersial · 23/07/2024 10:56

Absolutely tell her! But I agree with the "shit sandwich" approach - say something nice/supportive/encouraging as well.

MonsteraMama · 23/07/2024 10:57

Oh absolutely tell her, I know so many people who just won't use a business if there's poor spelling or grammar anywhere in the promotional material, never mind the name of the business itself! That little apostrophe could genuinely be costing her a fortune.

Agree with @ranchdressing about bringing it to her as a shit sandwich: positive-oooh that apostrophe though-positive.

I can't think of any business where attention to detail is irrelevant.

Sunshineafterthehail · 23/07/2024 10:59

One of the dm's at our school has a business with a shop. .
Laura & Janes card shop.
*not real names..
Surely Laura & Jane's?

This. I'd absolutely point it out in a way that allows her to frame it as a mistake.

You don't think it's important for all businesses to pay attention to detail?

WitchyBits · 23/07/2024 11:02

@Kta7

I won't use businesses that can't use correct SPAG either.

SeeSeeRider · 23/07/2024 11:03

LadyChilli · 23/07/2024 10:50

Suggests it was an autocorrect fail rather than her grammar.

But autocorrect (at least on my Android phone) offers the choice of what you originally typed plus some suggestions. You have to pick something. If you pick the wrong thing that's you, not the phone.

Why not Laura's and Jane's Card Shop? (Capitals if it's a business name).
