to quietly correct this?

I want to preface this with saying at this juncture I have not uttered a word.

Through my DDs I am friendly with one of the school mums (sit with her at parties, message about the kids, take them to soft play together).
She’s recently set up a business…let’s call it The Happy Faces but on all her promotional things she’s put an apostrophe in faces so the the business is called “The Happy Face’s”…

I suppose I’m asking if anyone would point this out to her? The type of business it is lends itself to correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. Mine is by no means perfect btw and I’m asking more from the point of view that she is absolutely lovely and i would like to see her succeed and wouldn’t want people to be put off the business by incorrect punctuation in the business name.

I just had a good look through the Facebook page and the posts are littered with errors like “If your looking for somone to….” instead of “you’re”. I feel like the name is the tip of the iceberg.

It probably is

They are awfully common on MN - your/you're, there/their/they're, loose/lose, its/it's, and my pet hate: 'of' for 'have'. But it is said to be cruel to mention them.

Fuck it then. She's beyond help. Keep stum

Is it a childcare business? If so it probably is putting people off but a) it seems to be incredibly common and b) she'll probably have more business than she needs anyway!

MissingMoominMamma · 23/07/2024 12:08

My boss is dyslexic. He’s also brilliant at what he does.

I can’t get to every bit of marketing before it goes out, but if does go out incorrectly, I can assure you that it in no way affects his ability to do his job.

I find it quite sad that people would actively avoid what is a terrific business, just because he occasionally gets his SPAG wrong.

purpleme12 · 23/07/2024 12:09

One business I saw would put on Facebook
'Tena Fridays' when she meant 'Tenner Fridays'

She could pay a writer/proofreader to check it for her. But two problems with that - it costs money, and it also means admitting your SPAG is not up to scratch.

californiaisdreaming · 23/07/2024 12:11

Just mention it passing the next time she shows you the marketing and ask if it's supposed to have the apostrophe there, as if you only just noticed it that second.

Then don't mention it again. If she never mentions her business or brings it up in a way where you think you can make a comment like that and not seem like you've been thinking about it for a long time then I it's too awkward to mention it and you should just leave it.

This is why business owners should pay proofreaders or have friends look over copy. There is no chance I'd buy from them. I'd be happy to proofread though.

Peonies12 · 23/07/2024 12:13

I'd definitely tell her. I wouldn't use a business with that error, so sloppy

Aligirlbear · 23/07/2024 12:17

ranchdressing · 23/07/2024 10:53

You have to shit sandwich it!

Hey friend,
Your website/leaflet/instagram page looks so fantastic! Excited for you.
Did you notice a small typo? It should be faces not face's! Just thought I'd point it out in case you hadn't seen! Autocorrect is always adding them in for me uneccesarily...
Hope everything is going well with it

This exactly

Katiesaidthat · 23/07/2024 11:50

I understand that would mean two different card shops?

Are you asking a question? Because it doesn't make sense

It does if you read the previous posts she was replying to

But it's like dirty shoes, or scruffy clothes. Sadly, first appearances count. It matters not if someone is brilliant at their job; an outsider does not know that, and only had 1st impression to go on.
So yes, get the title of your business correct

FalderalderaldoSittingintheWater · 23/07/2024 12:22

SeeSeeRider · 23/07/2024 11:03

But autocorrect (at least on my Android phone) offers the choice of what you originally typed plus some suggestions. You have to pick something. If you pick the wrong thing that's you, not the phone.

If you don't know the grammar, punctuation or spelling, relying on autocorrect is bonkers because you don't know which is the correct one

JudgeJ · 23/07/2024 12:24

Gracelet · 23/07/2024 10:46

I would tell her. Just say something like "Oh no, have you noticed this error?"

I would tell her. As a consumer I would never use a business where that kind of simple error was made, I would consider the owner to be careless with their sign and probably careless with other things. My butcher years ago would ask me to have a look around at his notices!

'oh no! The printers have put in a dodgy apostrophe... Don't let them charge you to correct it. Good luck with the launch, so exciting!'

Why blame the printer?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/07/2024 12:25

‘I don’t know whether you’ve noticed but there’s a typo - that apostrophe in ‘Faces’. Probably wretched autocorrect again!’

I would call it The Laura and Jane Card Shop, Laura's and Jane's sounds clumsy.

Yep. It's hardly worth mentioning the error in the name with all that going on.
At this point, I'd leave her to it and say nothing.

TheChosenTwo · 23/07/2024 12:31

Cheeesus · 23/07/2024 10:54

Are there a many businesses where attention to detail isn’t needed? Whatever it is you need them to turn up on time, charge the right amount etc?

I was thinking about this too.
Something like a manual trade a bit of poor spelling or grammar wouldn’t necessarily bother me because I would expect their level of expertise lay elsewhere. For something remotely education or IT based yes it would bother me and I’d be less likely to use the business because if a basic admin error has been made I’d think their attention to detail was perhaps poor too. Especially if it is a highly saturated field it would be easy to discount one with a glaring error.

purpleme12 · 23/07/2024 12:32

JudgeJ · 23/07/2024 12:26

Well ok but that's using it as an adjective.
Your call if you're naming the shop.
We were just talking about where to put apostrophes

purpleme12 · 23/07/2024 12:32

And yes Laura's and Jane's wouldn't be right. I hadn't said that was right

Then if possession is the only thing being considered it should be Laura's and Jane's Card Shop, indicating it belongs to both of them but that's also a very clumsy construction.
