to quietly correct this?

I want to preface this with saying at this juncture I have not uttered a word.

Through my DDs I am friendly with one of the school mums (sit with her at parties, message about the kids, take them to soft play together).
She’s recently set up a business…let’s call it The Happy Faces but on all her promotional things she’s put an apostrophe in faces so the the business is called “The Happy Face’s”…

I suppose I’m asking if anyone would point this out to her? The type of business it is lends itself to correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. Mine is by no means perfect btw and I’m asking more from the point of view that she is absolutely lovely and i would like to see her succeed and wouldn’t want people to be put off the business by incorrect punctuation in the business name.

your’re?

Typos are very easy to make. ;)

I can’t even blame anything else; I sneezed and just carried on typing one handed 😂

But your is not a typo for you’re. Autocorrect doesn’t change those. That’s just someone who doesn’t know basic SPAG.

Suppose there was a character, like a mascot for the business, called Happy Face... Then the business could legitimately be called Happy Face's Balloons (or whatever)

One business I saw would put on Facebook
'Tena Fridays' when she meant 'Tenner Fridays'

😂 Reminds me I once heard someone refer to Jane Austen as the tenner lady

In a nearby town there's a Barber shop called Cushty Cut's . I doubt they've been told as it's been around a few years !

And they’re still in business, even though for some on here the unforgivable lack of attention to detail takes priority over hairdressing skill 🤷‍♀️

Should it not be Parents’ noticeboard (if it applies to more than one parent)?

Yes it should, that’s why I mentioned it. That ‘s instead of s’ annoys me everytime I walk by it.

Delatron · 23/07/2024 16:12

Sounds mean but if she can’t even get that right then the business doesn’t stand a chance so I probably wouldn’t bother.

My boss is dyslexic. He’s also brilliant at what he does.

I can’t get to every bit of marketing before it goes out, but if does go out incorrectly, I can assure you that it in no way affects his ability to do his job.

I find it quite sad that people would actively avoid what is a terrific business, just because he occasionally gets his SPAG wrong.

Is it a big business? Like others, I think informal communication is fair game for SPaG errors and it's a bit of a dick move to correct them. Errors in comms from a small business generally wouldn't bother me unless it's a business which deals with SPaG professionally, as OP mentioned. Errors in comms from a bigger business are a turn off though; there's no shame in dyslexia (or just not being great at SPaG) but there's also no shame in accepting your weaknesses and delegating to someone else, in fact that in itself is a strength.

Because nobody cares about split infinitives. They’re quite the norm these days. Language evolves. That’s part of the fun.

In any case, AFAIK it was 18thC grammarians, trying to codify the English language, who decreed that infinitives should not be split. Their reasoning was apparently that because you can’t split a Latin infinitive - Latin being in their eyes the ‘perfect’ language - it should not therefore be allowed in English.

Which is clearly supremely daft. And I say that as a fully paid-up pernickety old pedant myself.

Good old grocers' apostrophe! The Turkish greengrocers near me have some fantastic stabs in the dark on their fruit and veg labels. I especially enjoy buying Qukembar's.

The Pakistani greengrocer, in our little Scottish town, used to label satsumas as "wee oranges". Nothing was lost in translation 🙂!

How many people named Jane are involved in it? If there are more than one, it is correct.

Nope. You still need a possessive apostrophe, but it would be after the s in Janes.

e.g.

my dog’s food (1 dog)
my dogs’ food (more than 1 dog)

I so often see 'Jane Austin', who I think went on to found a car company with William Morris.

I know there's a good joke to be made here about John Thorpe in NA, who is always banging on about carriages and how fast his horses are...

It’s a very small business at the moment, and we are both working all the hours to establish it. I do try to read every marketing post, so I can point out any mistakes- but I don’t always get there in time.

Emmz1510 · 26/07/2024 09:10

Bad spelling and grammar puts me right off using a business so yes I’d tell her.

Not exactly the same but I used to pass a tanning salon that charged £2 a session and the sign on the outside read ‘only £2- you get what you pay for’ as if that was a compliment! Person clearly didn’t understand what that phrase means….
