AIBU to ask neighbour to park car elsewhere? Diagram!

DinoNuggetsRUs · 23/07/2024 10:36

So I have never had a drive before and idk whether I'm being unreasonable.
My house is on a residential road - there's no through road, I'm not sure whether this would be classed as a cul de sac?
Anyway, my house and drive is right on the corner of where the road angles off and the neighbours been parking their van directly opposite my drive, blocking their own drive in. They have 3 cars/vans and we have 2. So they park 2 on their drive and one on the road opposite my drive.
While not impossible, it makes it really awkward for me to reverse out in the morning. I'm a bit of a crap driver and I've already accidentally reversed into one of their cars and we've only lived here 3 months. It cost me a fortune to fix but they were really great about it.
I'm not sure whether it would be unreasonable to ask them to park a little further up? They seem like really reasonable and kind people but I guess it's not their fault I'm shit at reversing. I essentially have to do a ten point turn to get out.

You need to be reversing onto your drive not off.

Mitsky · 23/07/2024 10:38

Why don’t you reverse into your drive?

Shinyandnew1 · 23/07/2024 10:38

Are they parking on a bend?

ArtFartGunkel · 23/07/2024 10:38

Is there a reason you don't reverse on to your drive?

SilenceInside · 23/07/2024 10:38

You can't ask them to park elsewhere if they are legally parked. And you should be reversing onto your drive so you can pull out forwards!

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 23/07/2024 10:39

Reverse into your driveway and then drive out, much safer and no they shouldn't have to move their car.

Simonjt · 23/07/2024 10:39

You’re probably better driving to the right hand side of your diagram, then reversing into the drive. Or reverse off into the wrong direction and turn the car around.

ClaudiaWankleman · 23/07/2024 10:40

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask - especially as you can point to some unfortunate damage as evidence! Surely they can just park slightly around the corner one way and that would give you a lot more room.

Depending on the width of the road/ length of your car it may still be difficult to reverse onto your own drive if you're driving from the right hand side of your picture, so reversing on might not solve the issue completely.

coconutpie · 23/07/2024 10:42

You need to be reversing into your driveway so when you need to leave the house, you can just drive straight out.

Is this a reverse about a reverse? (I'll get my coat).

But seriously op, I think you should take some driving lessons. If you're not confident in reversing, you are a risk to other road users.

Sunshineafterthehail · 23/07/2024 10:43

You were deemed able to drive op so get reversing!!

Chasingsquirrels · 23/07/2024 10:45

Reserve into your own drive.

But, they shouldn't be blocking a dropped curb.
Parking on a corner like that isn't good either.

Definitely have a chat with them about it.

DinoNuggetsRUs · 23/07/2024 10:45

Consensus seems to be I need to learn to reverse onto my drive!
I'll have a crack at it tonight.
I'm not actually THAT bad a driver, I'm just not confident when it comes to going backwards - forwards and I'm all good!
I'll definitely try this and see if it helps, to be honest it never even occurred to me but that's probably because of my ineptitude at reversing my car.

You should reverse onto your drive and then exit in a forward gear. It's much easier, and you have much better visibility of pedestrians and cyclists.
And what the Highway Code says you should do....

AntiHop · 23/07/2024 10:46

What kind of car do you drive op?

SlowRunner06 · 23/07/2024 10:47

Reverse onto your driveway and invest in some parking sensors or parking camera

thursdaymurderclub · 23/07/2024 10:48

while it wouldnt be unreasonable to ask the driver to park the van elsewhere, i suspect looking at your diagramme they may tell you to foxtrot oscar!

its hard to tell if they are actually parked on a corner or if its just a bend in the road so potentially the veh is illegally parked, but i think you'd be hard pushed to go down the route.

as has been pointed out, you would be better placed reversing onto your drive rather than driving on and reverseing out! and i do suggest you get some practice as its not the van drivers fault you are not a great driver.

AntiHop · 23/07/2024 10:46

What kind of car do you drive op?

I'm embarrassed to say I actually have rear parking sensors. To be fair when I hit their car there was also another car double parked on the opposite of their van.
My diagram is slightly off as their van is directly opposite my drive on the corner, and I'm unable to reverse the other way because theirs houses just off that road and they park their cars their. It's a bit of a tight little road but everyone has a 2 car drive.

You need to practice your reversing -it really is an essential skill. Get some decent reverse cameras as well. The more you do it, the better you will be!

Treaclewell · 23/07/2024 10:50

The position of their van would make reversing difficult anyway. If she does it from her own side of the road there's the swinging out of the front to take account of. Or she could drive up the road, turn round and past the van and reverse in that way, which would avoid the swing out. The van is parked on the corner, though, if the diagram is correct, which is wrong, and if the road width is as shown, would make it difficult for emergency vehicles to pass.

DinoNuggetsRUs · 23/07/2024 10:53

They seem a really nice family so I'm not going to ruffle any feathers. I'm going to attempt to reverse into my drive. I've never had a drive before so I didn't know that that was the done thing!

Fargo79 · 23/07/2024 10:53

Reversing is almost always the safest way to park on a driveway or in a bay. Struggling to think of a scenario where it would ever be preferable not to reverse. You have better visibility at all times during the manoeuvre and better precision.

He's parked very badly because it looks as though he is causing a hazard to cars driving round that bend who he is forcing onto the opposite side of the road with no visibility. However from a "parking on your drive" perspective, he isn't causing an obstruction. You just need to reverse.

With a bit of practice, you'll be a pro at reversing in no time!
Will definitely make your life easier.

blackcherryconserve · 23/07/2024 10:55

If they are parking their van on a bend they should move it anyway but you also need to be able to reverse into your driveway. I empathise OP. My car is kept in a communal garage and I need lots of space to reverse park without knocking into concrete pillars!
