AIBU to ask neighbour to park car elsewhere? Diagram!

So I have never had a drive before and idk whether I'm being unreasonable.
My house is on a residential road - there's no through road, I'm not sure whether this would be classed as a cul de sac?
Anyway, my house and drive is right on the corner of where the road angles off and the neighbours been parking their van directly opposite my drive, blocking their own drive in. They have 3 cars/vans and we have 2. So they park 2 on their drive and one on the road opposite my drive.
While not impossible, it makes it really awkward for me to reverse out in the morning. I'm a bit of a crap driver and I've already accidentally reversed into one of their cars and we've only lived here 3 months. It cost me a fortune to fix but they were really great about it.
I'm not sure whether it would be unreasonable to ask them to park a little further up? They seem like really reasonable and kind people but I guess it's not their fault I'm shit at reversing. I essentially have to do a ten point turn to get out.

Can do 2 things. 1. Reverse in

  1. Remind them that you're not so good at driving and they don't want the inconvenience of a car repair.
olympicsrock · 27/07/2024 19:23

The van is NOT legally parked as it is accross a dropped curb and not good to park on a bend.
OP can reverse in but should still have a word so that the neighbour can park more considerately.

Reverse into your drive when you come home and then you can drive out forwards. Always easier to reverse into a driveway

Xmasdaft2023 · 27/07/2024 22:01

Reverse park in to your drive ☺️

I was told before I even started lessons, learn to reverse park as if you can get in a tight space you can get out again (even if it looks impossible!), I pride myself in my reverse parking as a result 😂

Take your time, it may take 10 attempts a few times but it’ll start to take less each time, promise!

fetchacloth · 27/07/2024 22:10

The van shouldn't be parked on a dropped kerb, it's illegal and it's not safe to park on the bend.
As other pp have said, try reversing onto your drive, it will be easier for you in the long run.

Jeannie88 · 27/07/2024 22:32

Too many cars everywhere, we've just got to our best with easiest for us. Yes, reverse park into your drive or do lots of navigation to get out. It's a curse of the modern world, double parking, little room to get our etc. So many arguments about this, one neighbour has one car and another has 5, nonwin situation. X

HRTFT, but for all those posters telling you to reverse in and drive off your drive - take the advice with a pinch of salt. I have a similar parking situation (but on a straight bit before the bend), and exiting forward is far more difficult than reversing.

Generally, most cars are more maneuverable in reverse gear so if you're struggling to reverse off then you'll likely struggle even more to drive off forwards. Practice will help, but also asking your neighbours to help (they, and you, sound like reasonable people) might help. Good luck.

Really?? I think you have got this wrong! It’s much easier to exit a drive forwards than it is backwards because forwards, you can see clearly where you are heading and what the hazards are. Backwards, not so much.

Consensus seems to be I need to learn to reverse onto my drive!
I'll have a crack at it tonight.
I'm not actually THAT bad a driver, I'm just not confident when it comes to going backwards - forwards and I'm all good!
I'll definitely try this and see if it helps, to be honest it never even occurred to me but that's probably because of my ineptitude at reversing my car.

It’s so much easier to reverse into a driveway or any parking space, because you have the mirrors to guide you. Once you start doing it regularly, you’ll wonder why you didn’t automatically do it! I reverse up my driveway and into my garage - it’s a piece of cake compared to going in ‘nose’ first.

Sti · 28/07/2024 01:18

As its your drive and if your the onlyone useing it, just park across your drive way, no need to drive in, forward or backward

JRM17 · 28/07/2024 07:36

Unless you drive a double decker bus then there is no excuses for not being able to reverse based on that diagram, I'd suggest who ever let you pass your test is fired and you take some driving lessons.

Pay for a local driving school to give you an hour's lesson to teach you to reverse into your own space . It wouldn't be very expensive in the end of it helps.

The neighbour shouldn't be parking in front of ANY driveway as these have dropped kerbs.

Nobody owns the space outside their property. See Highway Code rule 242 and 243.

Not sure what these rules 242 & 243 have in relation to parking in front of your own driveway? As long as the drop kerb isn’t for disability aides it isn’t relevant to the OP. Parking in front of a property entrance is for other people, our council confirmed this when I had my drop kerb, I could park in front to block myself in. Also if driveway empty you can legally park in front of it - police only can remove if causing obstruction to someone getting off drive not onto it - Now that is bonkers! Parking on a bend, if it’s a normal carriageway also isn’t illegal although not sure what people do this, as the obstruction would only be of 2 cars came along and didn’t give way, was told that by police as my parents had some issues.

BustingBaoBun · 28/07/2024 17:14

You can't just be good at driving going forwards! You do need to get good at reversing.
What if you had to reverse back up a road? It happens.
Or a country lane?
Or in a carpark?

Having said that, it's not as bad as a woman I used to know who would never do right turns. Only left. Her husband had to plan routes for her so that she didn't have to turn right or cross traffic. I'm not joking! I couldn't quite get my head round that

GrannyWeatherwaxsBroomstick · 28/07/2024 17:35

You can request double yellow lines on sections of road. However, you will need a good safety reason. Cars or vans parking on a bend should do it. Have a look round on your local council website or go into the offices and ask.

alexdgr8 · 28/07/2024 17:42

don't you reverse into a car park space ?
you ought to; much less likely to collide with something, or someone, when pulling out.

Caroparo52 · 28/07/2024 18:05

Yup ask them to move. Their parking is out of order due to making the be bend very difficult to manovour due to lack of sight lines. It's just asking for an accident

Mamasperspective · 28/07/2024 23:29

Practice your reversing until you master it

AmIEnough · 29/07/2024 08:11

I’d probably just go over to them and just admit to them in a very jokey way that you are shit at driving and concerned that you’re going to have another accident and to save both of you the trouble that you wonder if they could possibly park a meter or so further up to avoid any future damage? I think if you put this in the right way, they will be more understanding and clearly wouldn’t want to go through the hassle of having to put in another insurance claim or get their car repaired. Good luck.

Goodtogossip · 29/07/2024 13:52

Once you've reversed a few times onto your drive it will become second nature so try not to stress about it. It'll make things so much easier in the mornings being able to drive forward off your drive without worrying about hitting their van. Good luck

GoofyGoldie · 29/07/2024 14:05

I live on a very narrow street. My driveway was also very narrow (until we enlarged it last year & took out the front wall.) It was impossible to reverse out if someone parked opposite. It was also impossible to reverse on if someone parked opposite. Luckily there's no house there as its the start of a playing field, so it would be visitors to neighbours or the field parked there. I damaged my own car scraping it on the gate post - no sensors or cameras in that car. Even with nothing opposite my driveway was a nightmare to get on & off. It was clearly built for tiny cars.
We were lucky enough to be able to take out the lawn & make space to park both our cars on the drive, & we still have lots of bushes & plants round the edges.
The neighbours shouldn't park on a bend or over a dropped curb even if it is their own.
I'd have a word with them - I'm sure they'd rather move their van than have anything damaged again.

You can't ask them to park elsewhere if they are legally parked. And you should be reversing onto your drive so you can pull out forwards!

Or reverse round to the right instead of left and then turn round if needs be.
