AIBU to ask neighbour to park car elsewhere? Diagram!

So I have never had a drive before and idk whether I'm being unreasonable.
My house is on a residential road - there's no through road, I'm not sure whether this would be classed as a cul de sac?
Anyway, my house and drive is right on the corner of where the road angles off and the neighbours been parking their van directly opposite my drive, blocking their own drive in. They have 3 cars/vans and we have 2. So they park 2 on their drive and one on the road opposite my drive.
While not impossible, it makes it really awkward for me to reverse out in the morning. I'm a bit of a crap driver and I've already accidentally reversed into one of their cars and we've only lived here 3 months. It cost me a fortune to fix but they were really great about it.
I'm not sure whether it would be unreasonable to ask them to park a little further up? They seem like really reasonable and kind people but I guess it's not their fault I'm shit at reversing. I essentially have to do a ten point turn to get out.

I have a similar issue, the neighbour opposite won't park in her Drive but parks in front of our parking area on the opposite side. It's ruddy annoying tbh when she has a Drive but hey ho...reverse parking is definitely the way to go. You'll be adept after a few attempts.

Just a few bits from the internet, as it's easier to C&P...

You might not know this, but cars are more maneuverable when driven in reverse. This means that it’s actually much easier to reverse into a perpendicular parking spot.
This is due to the fact that a car pivots around the wheels that don’t steer. Seeing that a car’s front wheels turn, that means it can execute a tighter turning radius in reverse. Hence, easier maneuverability.

Cars are much more manoeuvrable in reverse. That's why forklifts operating in confined spaces in warehouses steer with the rear wheels.

A car pivots about the wheels that don't steer. This means the car can turn more in a given space. You can get the back in the get the front to follow.
Going forward you can't do this, you need more space as you pretty much need to get the car straight before driving.

Wow, that's unbelievable. Never knew that. Mumsnet is fabulous sometimes.

Seems like a load of extra work for no good reason.

How else do you suggest she does it??

Consensus seems to be I need to learn to reverse onto my drive!
I'll have a crack at it tonight.
I'm not actually THAT bad a driver, I'm just not confident when it comes to going backwards - forwards and I'm all good!
I'll definitely try this and see if it helps, to be honest it never even occurred to me but that's probably because of my ineptitude at reversing my car.

If you're not great with reversing then surely far better to be doing it into your own drive (where there are unlikely to be any obstacles/pedestrians/other vehicles) than out into the road! You've got to reverse either on or off so I don't get why you think off will be easier Confused

SuperGreens · 26/07/2024 11:35

If you were to park in the same way, across your driveway, and they had too, would it block the road? If so I would start doing that when they are not there, and see what happens when they get back.

And if they are parking across a dropped kerb (including their own) its a contravention and a PCN can be issued. So if that was the case when you hit them, then your insurers should have gone after them not you.

brunettemic · 26/07/2024 11:36

I drive forwards onto my drive as there were a few car thefts in our area, including next door but one, and police advice was it’s more of a deterrent as someone stealing your car doesn’t want to reverse and go. OP said their road is effectively a cul de sac so reversing off the drive isn’t really dangerous.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 26/07/2024 11:40

My daughter has the same problem. She has a new build and the road around the estate is narrow. There is no path outside her house - her drive goes straight onto the road. There is a path outside the houses opposite.

The couple directly across from her have two cars and a works van. The van is parked on the road. It really restricts the amount of space she has for manoeuvres. But she is great at manoeuvring - she has driven tractors, steamrollers, articulated trucks, buses. But she admits it's hard to reverse onto her drive because of the van parked opposite.

I'm ok at reversing but find it impossible to reverse onto my drive. I live on an A road. There are often cars parked on the opposite side of the road, so if I stopped my car in the position where I could reverse onto my drive I would be double parked and completely block the A road. When I have blocked the road to reverse there are always irate drivers with their hand stuck to their horns.

So I have no choice other than to drive forwards onto my drive. If I think on, I go out when it's quiet and turn my car around so that I can drive off forwards.

DinoNuggetsRUs · 23/07/2024 11:30

@AntiHop you would be guessing wrong Smile
Also, I just don't reverse often as I've never needed to, but that looks as if it's about to change so thanks for your input and hope you have a great day!

Honestly, this is potentially a good thing that you need to reverse on a daily basis.

You’re NOT a competent driver if you can’t go forwards AND backwards. You need to look at this as an opportunity to improve and it’ll really help you in future.

Hankunamatata · 26/07/2024 11:56

If your kids are old enough - I often deploy one or two of them to help me reverse onto the drive to avoid hitting the walls. Lol

Loubelou71 · 26/07/2024 12:03

This happened to me and I had to learn to reverse park on my drive each day. My drive is narrow so it took practice and confidence but I'm there now. I think you might have to practice yourself.

MulberryBushRoundabout · 26/07/2024 12:07

Get yourself a rear view camera fitted. I used to hate reversing, then I had a car with a camera and got used to reversing all the time. Now I don’t have a camera, but the skills have stuck and I’m confident reversing without.

We are the same-there can often be queues of traffic going both ways on our road and cars parked on either side.

If you get into a position where you’ve pulled forward to reverse, there is often some pillock who tries to drive up right behind you (along with another 10 cars who follow them) so when it’s busy, it can be impossible to reverse anyway.

RustyBear · 26/07/2024 12:26

It’s a pretty stupid place for them to park anyway, because it means anyone coming past will be on the wrong side of the road going round a blind bend.
I live in a house in a similar situation, where my neighbour had four cars and vans and used to park them just round the bend on the side opposite my house.
I did try reversing in, but it meant going past my drive and reversing across the road when I couldn’t see if anything was coming past the parked car. Luckily that neighbour has now moved!

I am awful at reversing in my head, I then started reversing onto my drive and it’s been much easier! Parallel parking still gives me high blood pressure and tension though 😂

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 26/07/2024 12:40

@Shinyandnew1

Aye - far too many inconsiderate pillocks on the roads.

Sera1989 · 26/07/2024 13:00

Could you pretend you've only recently passed your test? I'm learning in my 30s and one of the neighbours often parks halfway over my driveway, once I pass and start driving on my own I will probably leave a note saying "please don't park over my driveway as I've only just passed my test and need room to manoeuvre". My bad driving isn't their fault but I doubt they want to be accidentally reversed into because they've done some dodgy parking

So you aren't that good at reversing so you choose instead of reversing into your drive which is a safe area, you will reverse into the road which an unpredictable area where there could other moving vehicles pedestrians.

LivelyBlake · 26/07/2024 13:58

Reversing in might not be easy, OP.

I have to the same problem and I reverse in. It takes me ages to do it as the car parked directly opposite my driveway makes it almost impossible to turn.

HotCrossBunplease · 26/07/2024 15:12

OP, you say you have rear parking sensors. However it’s having a parking CAMERA that is really the game- changer. Our new (to us) car came with one and it’s a revelation. And I was already not so bad at parking.

Threeweeksold · 26/07/2024 12:40

That’s a competency issue rather than the act itself being dangerous.

Exactly. If she’s not competent to reverse she shouldn’t be driving.

reverse into your drive

Lilywc · 27/07/2024 17:57

That’s just bloody mindedness on their part! &
you paid to fix THEIR car! ?
YES ask them to move before you accidentally hit their
car again ! Just laziness! IMO

BananaLamah · 27/07/2024 18:21

My neighbours pull this shit. I’m a disabled driver who drives an automatic. It took me 10 attempts to pass the test because of my disability, and I only drive on 30mph local roads because my ability is limited. So when they park right behind me I can’t get off the drive, if my DH is home I have to call him to reverse the car out for me. Like you I’ve already reversed into them once but they still park there. Twats. I’ve had the police out and their parking is legal so nothing I can do.
