To be missing size 4-5?

okayhescereal · 23/07/2024 08:14

Buying from Next...where is age 4-5? And then every other year age group after that. Do they not sell it? I'm so confused!

Age 2-3, 3-4...then jumps to 5-6?
The cm's jump too. So 92-98, 98-104...then jumps to 110-116!

I think I'd understand if it followed the same rule for all the sizes but the fact they do every size for the smaller ones and then jump for the bigguns has perplexed me.

LO is just going in to 4-5, is 5-6 gonna swamp them or do I go with it?

Thanks in advance for any advice

I don't know OP. I spent ages recently in next looking for age 8-9 stuff for my 130cm tall child until I thought to look it up on the website and saw it doesn't seem to exist.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 23/07/2024 08:32

It is because their rates of growth slow once they get a bit older so the same clothes will last longer. If you look at the pattern for older children it is the same with 5-6 then 7-8 so there isn't a 6-7. I think you just need to figure out if your child is closer to a 3-4 or to a 5-6 size.

Exactly this.
Look at the cm measurements and not the age, measure your child, and get what suits best.

StrawberrySquash · 23/07/2024 08:43

I used to work for them and we did 3-4 then 5-6 etc - i.e. two years at a time for children, not babies. Then we introduced 4-5 etc in between. Now they look to have switched back. Funny how these things come back around!

But what about larger but younger children?

I think this is why you should go by their height not their age.

Not really helped by my 103cm child! 110cm's feels like a mammoth difference

No one is stopping you from buying whatever size you want.

The absence of clothes that fit more than adequately does that.

There’s a big difference between 104 and 110 though, that’s a years growth. My dd is in 4-5 at the moment but it very skinny and 5-6 would be way too big. She a way off 110cm. The length of 3-4 is too short for her in dresses and leggings so can’t go for that size.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 23/07/2024 08:49

Look at different shops, next is a nightmare for this and if my child's growth spurt came at the wrong point I needed to use other suppliers. If you child suddenly grows to 143cm for example then next just doesn't fit right

Well yes if it doesn’t exist you can’t buy it.

Yeah think I'll have to!! Shame though as Next is a good fit for the older child and was hoping just to collect from one shop 😅

We have exactly this problem too. There are very few places I can buy clothes that fit DS at the moment. He's taller than 3-4 but not tall enough for 5-6. He's also very narrow so trousers in bigger sizes just fall down. Some places do have 4-5 so I buy from them but it's really tricky.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/07/2024 09:19

There was a campaign about this for Boden about 10 years ago.

I think the thing is, as children get a bit bigger, they can accommodate a bit more "bigness" in their clothes. Every size costs manufacturers /shops to buy and stock, so I guess they try to minimise what they produce. There'd variation in sizing between manufacturers anyway. Asda kids clothes much bigger for the same "label size" than M&S for example. H & M do 2 year brackets from about age 6.

flyinghen · 23/07/2024 19:41

If it helps at all my daughter is 103.5cm and I've gotten her 5-6 tights and they fit fine with room to grow. I got 5-6 knickers and they are fine too. I also got her some slim fit trousers and she was fine in the 5-6, obviously they do have growing room!

Thefanofdoom · 23/07/2024 19:44

IME Next own products are just the age so age 4, age 5, age 6. There's no age range sizes like 3-4, 4-5, 5-6 etc.

Also my historic experience with Next, however the screenshot in my original post is from the Next website today :)

I don't know what you are doing on the website but just go to boys then filter by age for specific ages of clothing to get 3,4,5,6 etc and on all clothing to get 3-4 4-5 5-6 etc . I took those screenshots just now.

Maybe just not when it comes to underwear? Feels pretty unlikely that they're just out of stock in all 4-5, 6-7, 8-9...etc

That’s really strange, they must not. I’d try 5-6 and if it’s too big save it for the future. I usually get underwear from Asda and it’s always lasted.

None of those are next brand. They're Gap etc. It's the same for boys and girls underwear and vests, they skip every other size. You can see it in the numbers on the search when you try to filter. 100+ options on alternate sizes, 30 odd on the others.

River island are the same except they seem to do it on all the clothes, not just underwear. 3-4 then 5-6 etc.
