My son current has a Samsung phone. He's upgraded to Iphone 15. New phone was collected today. All upgraded through EE. I was rushing after work to collect the new phone minutes before the store closed and didn't have chance to ask how it all works.
What do we do??!!

How what works?

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 22/07/2024 21:39

I’d contact Apple support. It’s free, quick and chat based and they will walk you through everything. Most iPhones also have prompts that guide you through set up from when you turn them on.

How to get his new phone operating like his old one. I don't have a clue

Surely if he's old enough for a phone he's old enough to set it up by himself Confused Hard to imagine a teen who couldn't manage this with their eyes closed tbh.

lazzapazza · 22/07/2024 22:03

That sounds like a downgrade to me.

Belfastchild74 · 22/07/2024 22:03

Leave it in the box and return it tomorrow

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 22/07/2024 22:08

It’s not hard, my DH just made the jump from Samsung to iPhone. He loves it.

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 22/07/2024 22:10

Dead easy from memory. Turn the iPhone on and it asks all sorts about whether you’re switching over an iPhone or android and it’s a simple process.

iPhones are better and that’s the hill I’ll die on Grin.

It won't operate like the old one. Its an apple, the old one was android.

If you mean get it working, turn it on, follow the instructions. He may have to pay again for apps or games hes bought.

It's really easy. When you put the sim in and turn it on it should ask you about transferring photos etc from an old phine... will let you pick android. It pretty much talks you though how to set up an iCloud account.

I've had Apple as long as I can remember so I can try and help you OP

Behappyandbehave · 22/07/2024 22:13

So right now he has a Samsung that works fully. Upgraded (in his opinion not mine) to iphone. He has both phones. The iphone says it needs a sim card. No new sim has been provided. We are currently away from home. He wants to use the iPhone only but can't as it has no data? He should be on unlimited data contract.
I don't understand how a phone contract can switch between phones and what the process is. Yes I should have asked this instore but didn't.

OP posts:
Needmorelego · 22/07/2024 22:14

Is he keeping the same sim card?
My daughter switched from iPhone to Samsung and we literally just took the sim card from the iPhone and put it in the Samsung.
Obviously some apps had to be re downloaded.

titchy · 22/07/2024 22:14

Remove sim from Samsung, insert into iPhone.....

You can just take SIM card from old phone and put into the new phone, if he needed a new SIM, EE would have sent one.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 22/07/2024 22:19

Again, if you start a chat on Apple support, a technician will hold your hand through the entire set up process. You don’t need to be using the new iPhone to chat with Apple support, you can use whatever you are using to post here on MN.

Behappyandbehave · 22/07/2024 22:24

Thank you given the fact it's now so late I'm going to try and sort this in the morning!

OP posts:
brainpicker · 22/07/2024 22:51

I find switching to iPhone was a bit crap tbh, not as good as android.
Take old SIM card out, put it in new phone... turn on.

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 22/07/2024 23:05

Go to the store in morning they will sort it out I'd imagine .... nit least cus ypuvr probably spent a fortune

Doingtheboxerbeat · 22/07/2024 23:16

I have only ever used android phones and they all seem so obvious / intuitive compared to when I have tried to operate my friends iPhones 🫣.
It's like using the left hand when you are right handed.

Behappyandbehave · 23/07/2024 08:24

Thanks. Stupid question I know but if we can get the sim out of his Samsung it just fits into the iPhone ok? Then the phone contract will swap over to the new phone?

OP, have you actually talked to your son? I assume he is an older teen, being on his second smartphone, and I don’t know a teen who’s net been able to figure out how technology works. There is Google, there is EE website… finally there is a pair of hands and eyes and it will be abundantly clear whether the sim fits as soon as you open the sim slot. Why is he not sorting it out himself?

I'm the other way round, wouldn't touch apple if it was the only thing available.

But.... I appreciate that people like different things (I find apple too restrictive and annoying, nothing is where it should be)

Back to the op question, why on earth do you need the staff to help you set up a phone? Surely if you're stuck there's google

PurpleMat · 23/07/2024 08:42

It generally takes a little while to swap everything over from an old phone to a new phone and I'd set aside several uninterrupted hours to do it.
Swapping the sim will only allow you to make calls and get data on the new phone, but won't transfer anything else.

Firstly make sure all his WhatsApps are backed up to his Google account. Also if you've set up end to end encryption make sure you know the pass key before transfer.
Make sure you have backed up all the phone settings.

Follow this guide
support.apple.com/en-gb/118670

Needmorelego · 23/07/2024 09:54

Just swapping the sim should work. I assume you bought a sim- free phone as you said it didn't come with one so you just literally put the sim from the old phone into the new.
Everything is automatic except you may need to download apps onto the new one if they aren't pre installed.
Edit : I mean it literally took minutes when we swapped the sim from my daughter's iPhone to Samsung - not hours like someone has said.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 23/07/2024 11:15

Yes it took my DH around ten minutes to swap all his stuff from Samsung to new iPhone and he has dozens of apps and four email accounts.
