My two boys are at the age where they are absolutely loving story time before bed. They are 2 and 4 so a great age to enjoy a good story

We have really exhausted our book collection and I wondered what story you cherished reading your children at this age/they cherished you reading to them?

We have all the classics but I've been surprised when gifted books I would never have bought myself as they gone down so well

I know it is cheeky using AIBU but I wanted to put an order in World of Books tomorrow for the weekend!

So what were your much loved books?

This thread is the gift that keeps on giving!!

I shall do a big list and return to it often for more. I think I could fill a whole library with all the suggestions!

Thank you so much for such wonderful posts. I'll be dipping back into this for years to come I think...

Other faves are any Meg and Mog, Hairy Maclary, Emily Gravett's Old Hat and The Longer the Wait the better the Hug - can't remember the author but she adores it!

The Hairy MaClary books by Linley Dodd. Brilliant rhyme structure, lots of repetition, and you get to do different dog barks (spelt out) and you can get the kids to do some of the movements.

Kitkat1523 · 22/07/2024 23:36

Owl babies

Greengagesnfennel · 22/07/2024 23:36

Perhaps not a good suggestion, but when my DDad first did bedtime with my DS, he couldn’t find the reading books… so he read the headlines from that evenings local paper!🤣 DS didn’t mind apparently!

TheFairyCaravan · 22/07/2024 23:55

Floss the Sheepdog and Emma’s Lamb by Kim Lewis were DS1’s favourite many moons ago. They were beautifully illustrated.

We’re going on a Bear Hunt
The Tiger Who Came to Tea
Oh Dear!
Dear Zoo!
Room on the Broom
Percy the Park Keeper
The Alfie Books by Shirley Hughes,

The Gruffalo

We’ve got a 7mth old DGS who has a story every night before bed. DS2 loves reading him the Tales From Acorn Wood series.

A few people have mentioned it, but we loved Fix It Duck. I also loved reading Each Peach Pear Plum. I still know that one off by heart, and my youngest is 19! Underworld did a song inspired by it, so I think it's left a lasting impression on a few parents 😁
