My two boys are at the age where they are absolutely loving story time before bed. They are 2 and 4 so a great age to enjoy a good story

We have really exhausted our book collection and I wondered what story you cherished reading your children at this age/they cherished you reading to them?

We have all the classics but I've been surprised when gifted books I would never have bought myself as they gone down so well

I know it is cheeky using AIBU but I wanted to put an order in World of Books tomorrow for the weekend!

So what were your much loved books?

Yes he is just about to start! Great suggestions thanks

My (now adult) children loved the Hairy Mclary tribe, Each Peach Pear Plum, Dogger (always made me cry), Tiger who came to Tea, the Large family (elephants) series and the Percy the Park Keeper series. They were and still are huge book lovers

Myfluffyblanket · 22/07/2024 18:42

Captain Toad and the Motorbike
Burglar Bill (best book ever)
The Cat in the Hat
Each Peach Pear Plum (and anything else by the Ahlbergs)
We're Going on a Bear Hunt
The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig
(by Helen Oxenbury and Eugene Trivizas)

Yes to Owl Babies! This was one of the ones that surprised me!

We were given it and I thought it was such a rubbish story (although beautiful illustrations!) but the boys love it and often request it!

I had completely forgotten about Owl Babies and thought the same - stunning pics but rubbish story, yet they loved it.

YYY to all Julia Donaldson stories, Mog, Alfie, Tiger who came to Tea, Harry the Dirty Dog, also Richard Scarry - What do People do All Day? That got 100s of requests.

ladymalfoy45 · 22/07/2024 18:58

We had the Julia Donaldson books and all the Linley Dodd books.
Christopher ( fucking ) Nibble. I really hate that guinea pig. It was one of the free ones from nursery (reading trust?).
My DH would read the good stuff then I was left with the story of a guinea pig who grows dandelions.

Fix it Duck!
Pants
Dinosaur Roar

Whataretalkingabout · 22/07/2024 20:17

Would you like a foreign language book? BOBO DODO. In French.

My three children adored this book. It was a library book that I special ordered because they enjoyed it so much. It is a collection of stories , chapters actually, the illustrations basicly tell the story of the life of a little bear named Bobo.

Drizzlethru · 22/07/2024 20:19

Pip and Posy books
Hairy McLairy
Peepo
Mog
The tiger who came to tea

onlyhereforthefood · 22/07/2024 20:41

My 2.5 year old is loving: all Julia Donaldson, The Tiger who Came to Tea, Dear Zoo, Elmer

Definitely stealing inspiration from this thread as I've read all of the above to death!

Your children could join the summer reading challenge at the library. They get a certificate and medal at the end and it's free! There are also other events at libraries throughout the summer. And libraries often have air con! So it's a good trip out

RappersNeedChapstick · 22/07/2024 20:46

DD loved You Choose by Nick Sherratt so much it occasionally had to go "on holiday" so other books had a chance.

s3tut0y3r · 22/07/2024 20:47

Libraries often have book bags. These might have puppets and games connected to a book
They are great

Blahdeblahblah1 · 22/07/2024 21:21

Rabbits nap and fox's socks are extremely popular with my 2 year old at the moment.
Here be dragons was an unexpected big hit with my 4 year old. Follow up here be giants which was good but not quite such a hit.
Every bunny dance, which I think was a freebie from health visitor has been really popular with both of mine too.
100 dogs or 100 birds they both really like.
Burglar bill my 4 year old loves.
Harry the dirty dog
The large family series by Jill Murphy (one of my childhood favourites), I find them very relatable now as a mum, just trying to get five minutes to yourself 🤣
My 4 year old loves all the classic fairy tales like Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretal, Rumplstilskin etc. we have a collection of early reading books with all the classics in.
If 2 year old likes lift the flaps giraffe is lost is a hit with mine as are the ladybird 'busy' series, so busy zoo, busy farm, busy town etc.

I’ve not heard of this but it’s come up on here a lot….. off for a look at it!!

Lollypoptop · 22/07/2024 21:28

Acorn Wood series

Ariela · 22/07/2024 21:48

The Jolly Christmas Postman. Yawn.

Itsausername91 · 22/07/2024 11:20

Most have already been mentioned but also On the Way home by Jill Murphy - our copy was mine in the 90s and it's managed to follow me around for 30 years somehow!

Also meg and mog stories but might be a bit too simple for four year old

My DS loves my (also nineties) copy of On the way home!

neverendingdebt · 22/07/2024 22:11

Julia Donaldson!

The other ones though were Stuck in the Muck and Bigger Digger - they were either Australian/NZ books from the antipodean ex in-laws.

Sunsetcocktail · 22/07/2024 22:12

Jasper’s Bath by Anna Currey
the kiss that missed
guess how much I love you
kipper books - mick Inkpen

SatinHeart · 22/07/2024 22:18

Goodnight Digger is the standout favourite in our house

Londonrach1 · 22/07/2024 22:19

You choose
Julia Donaldson any of the books
Mr men and little miss books

My daughter hated owl babies ..cried as the owl babies weren't with their mum so be careful with that one..

spiderlight · 22/07/2024 22:26

Just remembered 'Big Smelly Bear', by Britta Teckentrup, which we both loved!

spiderlight · 22/07/2024 22:27

Oh, and 'The big dog bottom swap' is very silly.

Tagyoureit · 22/07/2024 22:32

Dr Duck. I do different voices for the characters and my dd loves it. I personally love this one too!
The gruffalo, 3 little pigs, shoe maker and the elves, max the brave are favourites too.

My son was just Thomas the tank engine mad so he had the 25 book box set and we read those every night for years!
