Smoking outside in populated public places.

It was a beautiful day as I sat outside my local coffee shop with my 2 children, drinking smoothies and soaking up the sunshine.
Then BOOM, the table next to us lights up a cigarette and it blows our way.

The day before we were lining the streets for a tractor run…. We had a front view and the kids are at the front. Then BOOM, a man behind us lights up just as it’s beginning and is breathing the smoke down on us.

Why oh why is smoking allowed outside, and not just in designated smoking areas, where they can all sit and smoke together. It happens us all the time.

Yes they’re entitled to do it, but is it right? Hell no.

AIBU?

Unknown chemicals are good enough for me, as is the say so of a respiratory toxicologist of 30 years.

Are you not going to acknowledge that the link you posted is mostly about a chemical that's been banned for years in the EU and doesn't apply to British vapers? You'd think your respiratory toxicologist husband would know this. Also, no-one has said vaping is 'safe', they're saying it's safer than smoking.

Shaketherombooga · 22/07/2024 18:59

It’s changing thankfully - our cafe round the corner has now out up no smoking at outside tables signs up. One of the neighbours has gone on our WA grp asking for people to complain and back him up but so far it’s been tumbleweed…

PixieLaLar · 22/07/2024 19:01

People are just so intolerant in general nowadays.

Someone smoking outside in a cafe that is presumably allowing smoking isn’t doing anything wrong.

I don’t smoke but also understand others do and smoking outdoors is not illegal or selfish.

I didn't discuss this post or thread with my husband, he has better things to do, we've discussed vaping before, and he is a research scientist based in the UK so he is fully aware of the implications of vaping, thanks.
And actually, someone upthread DID say there are no problems with vaping.
Although I'm sure YOUR knowledge base exceeds 30 years of respiratory medicine.

HootyMcBooby · 22/07/2024 19:03

Post upthread reads "it has no impact on your health".

Are YOU going to acknowledge that you're incorrect?

Opinionwontchangeluv · 22/07/2024 19:06

Imagine when it was Inside, I'm told by my ol ma they used to smoke on trains and tubes I couldn't imagine the horror of it

houseonthehill · 22/07/2024 19:07

Smokers pay for their ‘NHS use’ about 4 times over in additional taxes. But the truth is that for all almost all of us, smokers and non-smokers alike, the bulk of our ‘cost to the NHS’ comes at the later stages of our lives, typically in the treatment of chronic and fatal illnesses which kill us. And those illnesses/conditions are pretty much the same in smokers and non-smokers.

Once again. Are you going to acknowledge that your link has got absolutely nothing to do with vaping in Britain so therefore is irrelevant to this thread? That chemical has been banned in the EU for years.

As for the other poster you're referring to, you're just deflecting.

You sound really considerate - good luck trying to give up!

Thanks here’s hoping! 🤞

Look at the absolute stinkers on here, arguing that smoking is fine, as it’s personal choice and legal…

Although it is most addictive than heroin. Just drug addicts at the end of the day. Legal drug addicts.

The article clearly states that there are many unknown chemicals, I don't know why you are so focused on that one ingredient. This also relates to vaping in the UK despite this being an American article.

AND IT WAS YOU who said "nobody has said vaping is safe".

YOU said that, YOU raised it as an issue, and I was pointing out you were INCORRECT.

Deflecting = pointing out your mistake?

I won't be responding to you further, you're clearly very confrontational for no reason and I suspect a bit embarrassed about your error.

As an ex smoker I still enjoy the whiff of someone else’s fag.
Sorry!

Oh me too!

spikeandbuffy · 22/07/2024 19:23

It's safer than smoking. I couldn't quit so it was smoke 30 a day or vape
I'm under consultants for medical issues and saw a GP this week who said it was amazing I managed to give up smoking. Even my dentist doesn't care I vape, just that I don't smoke any more

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/07/2024 18:05

As an ex-smoker, I'd be tempted to scrounge one off somebody and spark up just to get rid of a couple of annoying kids and their po-faced parent.

😂😈 - me too!

You are peddling misinformation. Yes correct, no-one is saying vaping is safe, just safer. Here you go, read this and educate yourself.

"Evidence shows that vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking"

goldsequin · 22/07/2024 18:24

YANBU.

Many smokers gather outside doorways and entrances meaning that people have no choice but to walk through a cloud of smoke. It’s vile and the smell stays with you. They should at least have to move away a certain distance so that non smokers can avoid walking though smoke.

I’m sure I remember when the indoor smoking ban was introduced there being a law that smokers had to be so many metres away from a building. If it’s still the case, it doesn’t happen.

We also have a problem with the local hospital’s non smoking policy and smokers thinking it’s ok to gather in groups right outside the entrance instead of stepping away a bit so that people can walk in smoke free.

The same goes for vaping, which is just as bad.

Agree.

Smoking doesn’t just effect the person who chooses to do it.

The smokers I don’t mind are the ones who are mindful of others, not the ones who decide that they can smoke where they like and f-k all those around them who have no choice but to endure it or have to move.

Plenty of evidence of secondhand smoke being harmful.

mitogoshi · 22/07/2024 19:33

I get annoyed too

Totallywoah · 22/07/2024 19:48

YANBU It's so selfish, why should non smokers and children have to breathe in someones disgusting cancer stick.

You wanted the smokers to be outside then you go outside and sit with them. How’s can that be their fault?

So because people can still smoke outside I should never venture outdoors with my family ever again and should remain behind closed doors for the remainder of my existence? Noted 👍

Depends on how strongly you feel about being around it, doesn’t it?

Also I don't 'sit with them', we can be stood minding our business watching something and some twat will come over to where we are and light up.
That's the usual scenario.

That was for Cattery.

I find it funny how I’m getting push back on this, so I assume those who are belittling my feelings on the matter are likely the offenders.

Tell me smokers, do you like being smelly? Cause despite popular belief amongst smokers, you still smell after taking a mint, your clothes wreak after smoking and non smokers are too polite to tell you. They just move away.

I think it speaks volumes that you make that assumption tbh. Can you really not accept that people may simply have a different view on this than you, or is that so beyond your imagination that you have found a way of dismissing those voices? For the record, I haven't smoked for 20 years and I think YABU.

WestofaCrave · 22/07/2024 20:02

WTF happened to showing respect to others? Why do some people go out of their way to be disrespectful?

Smokers - I'm sure you can think of things that repulse you and you don't want to be near? Show some bloody respect, smoking is not the norm anymore, you're becoming more and more excluded from society, rightfully so.

It stinks, you stink, smoke all you like but do it away from other people. Like anyone with a disgusting habit should unless they are totally clueless or don't care because they're a moron.

HoorahhoorahTheyaregoingaway · 22/07/2024 20:10

Letmehaveabloodyusernameplease · 22/07/2024 17:44

Oh do piss off.

Why are you being so Aggy? You could have gone inside! Smokers have to sit outside in the rain, hail or snow bet you would be wanting to be inside then, you can't have it both ways.
