To ask if I can miss a meeting at work for a GP appointment (in probation still)?

I have been given a GP appointment for the upcoming week, which clashes during our weekly team meeting where we discuss our work for the week ahead. I had previously talked to my manager about GP appointments as it came up in conversation and I mentioned how difficult they are to get in the evenings, and she said not to worry, and that we can take them during work hours and just make up the time.

The GP appointment is about a mole I'm worried about; I already had to reschedule the appointment before due to it clashing with work and this week is the soonest they could fit me in as I have also been on holiday (which is why I hadn't mentioned the appointment to my manager before now as I had no access to work emails as we are not allowed to access them on our phones but only on our work laptops). So it's not an urgent/emergency GP appointment, but it's still important. I'm also still in probation and have my probation review coming up at the end of the month, so don't want to be difficult or give any poor impressions of myself.

Should I contact the GP and ask to reschedule, or mention it to my manager and ask if I can miss the weekly meeting?

Ask your manager what they would prefer. Most people understand how difficult it is to get a GP appointment. For my team I'd just reschedule the team meeting, or ask you to write your plans in an email instead.

Just ask if you can miss the meeting. It’s a one off and it’s for your health, they’d be unreasonable to say no.

If any of my new starters let me know they have a GP appt, I'm absolutely fine with them going, regardless of the reason and what's scheduled in. It can be hard to get an appt, but work can usually be easily rescheduled, particularly during this period. Just give your boss a heads up and let them know you've already rescheduled it once. Hope it all goes well

  1. You have a right to go to a medical appointment
  2. You said your manager has already said it is ok to go during working hours and just make the hours up
  3. If it is about a concerning mole, then it is urgent in a sense as you shouldn't keep putting off checking such issues
