To think this is a bit of a weird thing to say?

Name changed, as it’s outing to her if she uses MN (no idea whether she does or not) and not bothered really

Dropped BIL’s birthday card around for his birthday. For years me and my sister have just done cards for each other’s partner, now both married into the family and have been for a few years and we still do it rather than expensive gifts. This year she didn’t bother with a card for my DH but I thought she might have forgotten or had a lot on.

I got a text from my sister this afternoon which read, ‘thanks for BIL card!!!! DN has chewed it up’

DN is soon-to-be 2. I just thought it was a strange thing to say. I’m not offended for the sake of £2 and would actually find it amusing if it has happened but all the exclamation marks and then just a statement that it has been chewed up, is a bit off, no?

Eh? She was just telling you what happened. I wouldn’t think too much of it

I know, but if my DD did that I wouldn’t say so! I would just thank for the card.

It was probably meant to make you laugh but honestly she should have just left it! Bit weird, but could have been worse lol.

SeeSeeRider · 21/07/2024 17:04

I don't see anything 'off' at all about that. The card arrived, the niece or nephew chewed it up. The multiple exclamation marks and jokey style make it a friendly informal little message. Toddler chewed up card, tee-hee.

DappledThings · 21/07/2024 17:05

I think it's weird an adult is texting another adult to say thank you for something given to a third adult on their behalf

ItsAlrightDarling · 21/07/2024 17:05

Sounds like she was just telling you an amusing anecdote?

She’s your sister tho and her DD is your niece, I can’t see why it’s weird to say it.

KrisAkabusi · 21/07/2024 17:05

It's a little anecdote about your nephew. You are way overthinking it!

Is also true, BIL has my number. Never thought of that though.

Weirdest bit here is that BIL can’t text for himself

MrHarleyQuin · 21/07/2024 17:06

Quite a thoughtless remark, sounds like she completely disregarded the card and left it around for the baby to chew.

StormingNorman · 21/07/2024 17:07

I would have thought it was a funny story about your niece she thought you’d like.

I don't see anything 'weird' at all in that message.

buckeejit · 21/07/2024 17:10

I would have said this not thinking it's in any way offensive

pinkstripeycat · 21/07/2024 17:13

It is weird.

I posted a birthday card for my friend’s DD. Friend messaged me, “Thanks for Gemma’s birthday card. Unfortunately she didn’t get to open it as the dog chewed it as it was posted through the door.”

Surely if you knew your dog ate the post you’d stop it before it happened. He must chew all post daily, not just one card on one day…….

I didn’t think she needed to tell me.

Surely if she was home to stop the dog chewing the card, you wouldn’t have needed to post it anyway?

Good for you. I do.

Someone paid for a card, made an effort etc.

There was no real need to tell that person that they let the child ruin it. No doubt they think it's funny...but it's actually just a bit rude.

Also weird that BIL couldn't text himself.

And weird that anyone would let a kid chew up someone's card. Were they incapable of intervening and taking it off her? She's 2, not 6 months!

Anyway, you're welcome not to find it weird! So are others!

MasterBeth · 21/07/2024 17:22

Good grief. It's just a "funny" anecdote.

Edited

These were all my thoughts too. If it happened I wouldn’t say anything! Just like if someone had got me a birthday present and it was the wrong size or fit, or something. I think it’s just etiquette. I am not too sure why a nearly 2 year old is chewing through a card to the point of destroying it and why nobody thought they’d remove it before it got to that point. Especially since it went in a separate letterbox on the outside of their house… even stranger to me. Oh well. I just told my sister it was funny and that she’d have to make sure all BIL other cards are out of the toddlers reach.
