Dogs in restaurants

Informal dining and cafes, fine. Pubs, fine. But only if dogs are on the floor and reasonably well behaved (by that I mean not barking all the time).Restaurant not fine. Am I alone in this?
If I am paying to go somewhere specifically to enjoy the food and pay extra for it and want to enjoy a special evening (birthday) why do I have to put up with a dog lying on the floor at the table next to me?. I just don't think this is necessary or acceptable. Am I totally alone in this?

@Trixiefirecracker I also live near Lakes and before I start can I just stress AGAIN that I like dogs. But a cafe in Pooley Bridge which is dog friendly which I do not have a problem with at all (unless posh restaurant specifically visited for special occasion and quality of food) was overrun with dogs to the point that all I could smell (it had been raining) was damp dog. Two wet labs were on leads but walking to our table and the owners were allowing this while continuing chatting. I put up with it, the dogs were lovely and we tried to ignore as I didn't want to seem off about it or difficult and as many people have said if it's dog friendly then you just have to go elsewhere. But can anyone see an argument where the dogs are so prevalent that they are taking over a bit? I think my issue is just that I don't get many days out or treats and posh meals and it would just be nice not to be faced with the presence of dogs everywhere I go.

I’ve never known dogs to be prevalent in any eatery, but perhaps it’s different where you live. A dog sitting quietly under a table in any restaurant (nice or not) is not bothering anyone, so I don’t know why this would be an issue.

A barky dog or any dog who is disturbing people shouldn’t be there ( like my dog, I learnt quickly). Perhaps a ‘dog area’ like in the old days of a ‘smoking area’ would be better. The dogs would have to be well behaved and not triggered by other dogs as they’d all be in close proximity.

You obviously have never visited the Lake District.

Are you going from business to business questioning them about their behind the scenes opinions on dogs?

I visit cafes and restaurants because I’m a supplier. We chat and I know lots of restaurant owners. 🧐 Not tricky to find out what people really think.

I’m just wondering what’s more annoying, a dog under a table or being grilled whilst trying to work.

Oh don’t be ridiculous, people talk and it’s my job to chat to the owners. 🙄 people do chat you know.

The dog is sounding preferable at the moment!

What dog? You are not really making any sense.

I find this hard to believe..... that the establishments you visit are dog friendly but are really hating dogs behind the scenes.

My mum went to a cafe where she was no sure if it was dog friendly. The staff took in turns leaving the kitchen to see her dog ( the best behaved greyhound boi). He got free food (a cut up sausage), and the staff were taking selfies with him.
Yes..... the staff were obviously hating him, but hiding their vitriol.

But you are misconstruing what I said, I said lots of owners of cafes and establishments don’t like having badly behaved dogs on their premises. I mean who would? It’s not rocket science and not sure why you can’t comprehend that. Not once did I say they hate dogs or it was all the cafes in the Lake District and every cafe owner . Well behaved dogs are not a problem but increasingly we are seeing lots of untrained dogs that are annoying other customers. Is that really that hard to understand?

OnlyHerefortheBiscuits · 05/02/2025 22:22

This will probably descend into another dog hating thread. The hatred for dogs is so weird on mumsnet.

Shame because when disaster strikes, dogs will search through the rubble, hunt through the forest, dig through snow, run into a burning building or dive into freezing water.....track your missing children for miles, stand guard through the night to protect and even guide you if you go blind...

....and they do it even for people who hold so much hatred towards their species.

We don't deserve dogs. We really don't.

Restaurants/ cafes should do a smell and bark test on the door.

If you ask my dog to bark, he does. Will he pass the test?

Alcazaba1 · 05/02/2025 22:36

So much nicer to see dogs in a restaurant than screaming kids. Especially the sort that come with over entitled woman. This breed of women seem to think that their brat shouldn't have to sit quietly and behave and they don't seem to mind how much mess they leave behind them.

Speak for yourself. Can’t stand some horrible smelly mutt casting hair and getting poo everywhere and their entitled owner thinking they’ve done everyone a favour bringing it in. At least kids are human. They’re SUPPOSED to be with their parents. People who think their mutt is like a human need therapy

Speak for yourself. I have had shite experience in cafes etc that have been to do with parents being entitled and feeling like their kids should just be let loose on people who don't' want to interact with them.

You have to exist in the world with children, maybe get a grip and accept some won’t behave the exact way you want

I love seeing dogs in pubs and cafes and they are usually much better behaved than the feral children there.
As for concerns about hygiene, that’s ridiculous. My dog is under the table, not on it and she is definitely not spreading poo or hair around. Sounds like you might be the one who needs therapy for irrational hygiene anxiety 💩🐕

Yes I’m sure your dogs exposed arsehole is super clean. And some dogs don’t shed but most do and I don’t want someone else’s dog able landing in my coffee. Leave it at home

Nope, sorry, she goes wherever we go when there are dog friendly places. She’s a little angel so you need to suck it up or go elsewhere. Life’s like that 🤷‍♀️

OK, I was sat with my DP of the time, and some kid kept getting under our table, and then was trying to take our food.
Another time, my dog was asleep under my table, and a kid approached her, and went to hit her on the head with a toy. Thankfully, kid's mum intervened.
I was a participant in a mental health group that was in a cafe... some people like to do colouring in. Despite all the staff and signs saying it was a private group, a mum thought it ok to let her kid sit at the table and do colouring in. Some service users got up and left.

Well know that most people don’t want your dog around. Dog friendly is a marketing gimmick to get customers in because they recognise the wave of entitled owners

Seriously I always left my dogs at home. I don’t understand why people need their mutt glued to them

And I could give you stories about badly behaved dogs and owners and perfectly behaved children - the difference is dogs can be left at home and kids cant

All the more reason for parents to try harder if they can't leave kids at home. No excuse for shitty behaviour at all.
