To think Kit Kat Club would be ok for a tween?

sorry Cabaret the Musical at Kit Kat club! It won’t let me amend the title.

Have tried reading reviews but am no further forwards. Aimed at 13+ but so are some of her other favourite musicals and they weren’t inappropriate at all (for context, favourite ever was Moulin Rouge - the blurb makes the vibe sound as though it’s in line with this but this isn’t something I want to get wrong). She is 12.

I would be so grateful for honest perspectives - risqué dance routines etc absolutely fine - graphic discussions of sex are absolutely not fine. Please spell this out for me if you have seen it?

I have just taken my theatre loving tweens to the new Starlight Express in Wembley that's was amazing if you haven't seen it and fancy something different...

I've just had a look at the Broadway listings and agree, it's all a bit same-old same-old at the moment, however Audra McDonald is opening Gypsy in November and Nicole Sheringzer (sp?) is opening Sunset Boulevard in October I think, so depending when you're going?

I also see The Book Of Mormon is still on... now this will perhaps be controversial because the language is very very adult, but actually thematically it's fine and an interesting watch. Particularly if you've seen Lion King, it's an interesting take on colonialism within musical theatre.

im not sure I would want an 11yo watching “fuck the frogs” 🫣

Can you give me an idiot’s guide to what it actually is? From my googling and YouTubing it looks like 2 hours of people doing circles on rollerskates, and I’m sure that there’s a lot more to it but I just don’t get it 🤣

Are you in New York or London? I can’t work it out.

i went to see Next to Normal yesterday and I really loved it. It’s not for a 12 year old though unless you want to talk about Mental Health. It’s a good one to see with a friend though.

Ive seen Cabaret afew times and no I wouldn’t take a child. It’s too dark. I wouldn’t have a problem with Rocky Horriw Show as it’s so dated it seems quite tame.

Everything we have seen so far has been London, and we visit London very regularly.

I have a list of new things in London to see, that’s not the issue.

The issue is that because we have seen so much already, I have tried to find something on Broadway for a trip in October and really struggled. From the promo bits, Cabaret seemed similar to Moulin Rouge (which we loved) so I wondered if this would be the one to go for (now thanks to this thread I know it most definitely is not!).

I hope that makes sense!

Do you fancy Hello, Dolly? I’m going next week and can’t wait.

PoliteOtter · 20/07/2024 22:24

OP you should definitely see it. I saw it with my mother so the explicitness really wasn’t that bad 😉 Yes there are lots of sexual references etc but honestly, I am reading this thread thinking “I don’t remember that”. I would take my 14 almost 15 year old now. I wouldn’t have at 12. The main thing about it that I really took away was the very dark ending but that was about something that I think people should know about.

It’s basically Cats but about toy trains rather than cats.

Cabaret definitely has some very adult themes- but aged 14 I was in a school production of it.

@CraftyYankee you might be interested to know that &Juliet is touring, playing in Manchester at the moment!

Edit: because I’m a idiot and quoted wrong post

Edited

Just seen &Juliet this afternoon and it was bloody fantastic! Best thing I’ve seen for ages. Think it goes to Blackpool next

MiniEggsAndTulips · 20/07/2024 23:05

ooh I saw this production back in January when Rebecca Lucy Taylor (Self Esteem) was playing Sally and it was fabulous!

There were a LOT of sexually explicit references (during the ‘Two Ladies’ song, which is about threesomes, someone is penetrated anally with a whisk which is then licked 😜) and a lot of simulated sex and sexual positions throughout during the general club songs.

Such an amazing storyline, acting and music. I imagine for a 12 year old a lot of the sexual stuff would go over her head but probably best to avoid to be on the safe side. Enjoy whatever you end up going to see!

(Also, I saw someone recommend Next to Normal upthread. I found this a lot more disturbing than Caberet - it’s about living with psychosis - and would recommend this even less for a 12 year old).

The issue is that despite spending ages researching it, nothing says anything about anything even vaguely like this. Or I wouldn’t have posted in the first place.

It says not recommended for under 13s, which is the same as other musicals that have been nothing like this.

I really appreciate the insight but this was my last port of call rather than my first, I had looked at lots online about it. It sounded excellent. Now I know better 🤣

Oh it's a wonderful show, don't get me wrong, but this is not suitable for a young child

Its hard to explain its a musical about trains racing essentially which I know does not sound exciting but its about Steam vs electricity and the battle of the underdog etc. They are all on rollerskating so the routines etc are spectacular.l and the visual effects are good. Its in a purpose built venue so the track runs through the audience. Similar vibes to Six in some ways (same costume designer I think) I don't think it is the best thing we have ever seen but it was goos and we had 2 11 year old and a 10 year old who all loved it. Building itself is cool too..think it's a converted tv studio. The other thing we have seen recently that was excellent was the Fantastically Great Women Musical... however it was on a limited initial tour in Newcastle and I don't know if it is still on.

RosesAndHellebores · 21/07/2024 09:43

The play is layered vis a vis interpretation. I would say if the play were performed like a standard production that would be fine for a mature 12 year old but mi lne read Atonement at that age.

My greater reservation relates to the simulated, experiential environment of the Kit Kat Club with pre show dancing ramping up the sleazy environment.

@Bedroomdilemmas113 have you had a look at the Regents Park open air summer programme?

EachandEveryone · 25/07/2024 00:23

Ive just been to Hello, Dolly. Its fantastic.

FrothyCothy · 25/07/2024 00:43

I saw it with my mum, not yet 60, and even I, not yet 40, felt mildly uncomfortable! It’s a very sexual show. Am watching thread with interest for my teen though.

Don't forget to come back and tell us what you thought! (I didn't see Les Mis on your list - I really hope you have taken her already!)

BigFeetEnergy · 25/07/2024 21:44

I've seen your list of what you've seen already. In addition to those, my 12 year old DD loves:

Blood brothers
Jesus christ superstar,
Les mis
Heathers
Joseph and the amazing technicolour dreamcoat
Starlight express

I think a fair number of those are touring the UK at the moment as well as on in the west end

Bedroomdilemmas113 · 25/07/2024 22:43

She doesn’t want to see Les Mis 😭

We have seen Joseph @BigFeetEnergy and probably others that I forgot when writing the list.

I’ve added Starlight Express to our London list to see too - thank you!

Seems a shame to see a show that's also playing in london!

Hello Dolly is so uplifting although it might be too old fashioned for a tween
