To think Kit Kat Club would be ok for a tween?

Bedroomdilemmas113 · 20/07/2024 15:36

sorry Cabaret the Musical at Kit Kat club! It won’t let me amend the title.

Have tried reading reviews but am no further forwards. Aimed at 13+ but so are some of her other favourite musicals and they weren’t inappropriate at all (for context, favourite ever was Moulin Rouge - the blurb makes the vibe sound as though it’s in line with this but this isn’t something I want to get wrong). She is 12.

I would be so grateful for honest perspectives - risqué dance routines etc absolutely fine - graphic discussions of sex are absolutely not fine. Please spell this out for me if you have seen it?

Ah, was going to ask if you’ve seen Hamilton! I love both so I say yep, you’ll enjoy Hadestown!

Options are so limited as we have seen so much.

But we are such huge musical fans it seems like heresy to visit New York and not do Broadway. So the pressure is on to find something!!

It's a great show and wonderful experience from the moment you step into the 'club' but you are right not to take her.

JamSlags · 20/07/2024 16:27

@Bedroomdilemmas113 Hadestown is on in the West End as well; I just clocked that you were talking about a trip to New York.

MrJamSlags just suggested Avenue Q, but he’s just being deliberately provocative now 😆

turkeymuffin · 20/07/2024 16:28

Just in case you're considering it, another one to avoid with a tween would be A Strange Loop. Very powerful but not for tweens.

I went to see the Rocky Horror Show with my Mum when I was about 12. She was mortified as she had no idea of the content. I've since seen it many, many times! I appreciate that's probably not helpful to you but it triggered a fond memory for me.

My girls' school took us to see that live - we were 16. I loved it, but I look back now and think WTF?

RedHelenB · 20/07/2024 16:33

At 13 I think she should be old enough and should know about unplanned pregnancies, the anti semitism and rise of Hitler. I'd let her.

OneOpenPlumOrca · 20/07/2024 16:33

. We did cabaret as our school production back in the late 90s. Years 8 to 11 in fishnets and underwear on stage and the teachers had roles too.

PoliteOtter · 20/07/2024 16:33

Glad you mean Cabaret not the actual club 😂

While it is very visually suggestive, much of the above is fleeting and even went over my head. It’s a fantastic musical. Am sure I had seen the film at 12. Maybe start with that? I think there are other west end musicals to see at 12 mind you.

Threeweeksold · 20/07/2024 16:36

It’s very sexualised. The dancers come right up to you and are very provocative, not to mention the masturbation. I think it might embarrass a teen.

TheTripThatWasnt · 20/07/2024 16:37

I went to Cabaret recently with 2 friends. I had seen it before (years ago, not at the Kit Kat club), they hadn't. On the way there, I asked them if they were familiar with the storyline etc, and they weren't - I pre-warned them at that point that it's not a 'cheery' show.

It's absolutely brilliant, and we all enjoyed it. But the themes are dark and strong (all the club stuff is a light relief from the stuff about the rise of the Nazis) - we went for a drink afterwards to 'debrief'. I'd take an older teen for sure - especially if they were studying history - but I think 13 is too young.

TheTripThatWasnt · 20/07/2024 16:44

@JamSlags I saw the Will Young production too. Most of it was done in a 'lighter' way than the current production, but the ending was the most chilling thing I've ever seen in the theatre. I can picture it clearly in my head to this day.

Clearly they can't end it in the same way when it's acted in the round (the entire cast was fully naked), so I found the final scene much less challenging in the current show, but you still don't have to use much imagination to get at what's being portrayed.

JamSlags · 20/07/2024 16:46

@TheTripThatWasnt hard agree, that last ‘shower scene’ was something else.

NotEvenTheRainHasSuchSmallHands · 20/07/2024 16:52

@TheTripThatWasnt I absolutely bloody loved the Will Young production and saw it 3 or 4 times. I agree, that final scene was incredible. I also loved the song 'I Don't Care Much' which the emcee sang -- not one I recalled from the film, and the actor who originally played the emcee was phenomenal.

OP, Cabaret is probably too mature for a tween like pp have said, but once your dd is a little older, definitely take her! It's an incredible show and the music is wonderful.

TheaBrandt · 20/07/2024 16:57

No it’s really rude. Took ours dd2 15 was just about ok we said glad she wasn’t any younger. She was about the youngest there.

TheaBrandt · 20/07/2024 16:58

Was fantastic but far too adult for younger teen

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 20/07/2024 16:59

I'm assuming you've already done Six, if not it's absolutely perfect tween fare.

TheaBrandt · 20/07/2024 17:00

They simulate sex acts on stage in this production! Err no would not be taking a 13 year old!

Bedroomdilemmas113 · 20/07/2024 17:04

Definitely not seeing it!

For context, and I’m probably going to miss some, we have already seen:
Frozen
Aladdin
Mary Poppins
Lion King
Hairspray
Pretty Woman
Shrek
MJ
Back to the Future
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Beauty and the Beast
Hamilton
Six
Wicked
Annie
Grease
Mrs Doubtfire
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella
School of Rock
Moulin Rouge
Jersey Boys
Sister Act

These are just off the top of my head, there’s more. So we are limited in what’s left and that I think might be a good idea for her age.

Mean Girls and Choir of Man in London in August plus 101 Dalmations on the U.K. tour.

Decided to give Hadestown a bash, thank you!

There is lots of things on Broadway that aren't on in the west end. Suffs, The Wiz, Little Shop of Horrors ....

just what I was going to say, it seems a real shame to go to Broadway to see something that’s on in London!

She will be just 12.

She does know about Hitler, the Nazis and antisemitism and I have no issue with her understanding what abortion is but I definitely draw the line at simulated sex and masturbation 🤣.

I am so glad I asked this question!
