To think Kit Kat Club would be ok for a tween?

sorry Cabaret the Musical at Kit Kat club! It won’t let me amend the title.

Have tried reading reviews but am no further forwards. Aimed at 13+ but so are some of her other favourite musicals and they weren’t inappropriate at all (for context, favourite ever was Moulin Rouge - the blurb makes the vibe sound as though it’s in line with this but this isn’t something I want to get wrong). She is 12.

I would be so grateful for honest perspectives - risqué dance routines etc absolutely fine - graphic discussions of sex are absolutely not fine. Please spell this out for me if you have seen it?

Matilda is great.....and although A Play That goes Wrong is not a musical, as someone else said it's really good and appealed for our party of 13-70 year olds

LesFlamandes · 20/07/2024 18:09

You are right not taking her. I took my very mature DD15 who loved it but it’s the youngest I’d go.

I see Kiss me Kate and Hello Dolly! Aren’t in your list. They are both great.

Helenloveslee4eva · 20/07/2024 18:10

It’ll be depending on how they run the “ two ladies “ routine 🤣

but never mind that it’s bloody bleak at the end … they did it at the kids school. Coming into the school hall with nazi banners was chilling

Let's see

Highly sexualised performances before, during and after the show

Nudity

Brief reference to paedophilia, where Sally Bowles dresses up as a child for 'Don't Tell Mamma'

References to Nazism, hatred of Jews, sex and abortion

Risqué actors showing up before, during and after the show

Telephone tables getting suggestive messages during the show

Yeah, no

An older teen, perhaps, but this a full on immersive performance, where you're brought in via the basement Schnapps Bar, watch the 'rehearsals' and preparations for the show, possibly spoken to by half naked actors and you watch a show about pretty adult themes

The issue is that despite spending ages researching it, nothing says anything about anything even vaguely like this. Or I wouldn’t have posted in the first place.

It says not recommended for under 13s, which is the same as other musicals that have been nothing like this.

I really appreciate the insight but this was my last port of call rather than my first, I had looked at lots online about it. It sounded excellent. Now I know better 🤣

I may have missed Matilda off my list but we have see that too (agree it’s fab!).

Specific taste for musicals no matter how good the play is!

It's definitely quite risqué and the whole vibe is aimed at adults. We enjoyed it because there were no children in the audience which added to the adults only feel of the whole evening.

Cattyisbatty · 20/07/2024 18:15

Def not. I saw it a couple of years ago and it’s not for a tween.

CraftyYankee · 20/07/2024 18:28

Have you seen & Juliet? Closed here but on in NY, highly recommend it!

@JamSlags I saw the Will Young production too. Most of it was done in a 'lighter' way than the current production, but the ending was the most chilling thing I've ever seen in the theatre. I can picture it clearly in my head to this day.

Clearly they can't end it in the same way when it's acted in the round (the entire cast was fully naked), so I found the final scene much less challenging in the current show, but you still don't have to use much imagination to get at what's being portrayed.

I saw the Will Young production and feel the same about that ending. It was incredible and I often think about it years later. I don't think my friend and I spoke for most of the journey home

GBJustina · 20/07/2024 18:39

Nazi germany and escalation of discrimination, abortion, a cute little number about living as a threesome. I love it. BUT… I have seen the London Kit Kat club production. It’s pretty full on - I would definitely say more than the Liza film. I think 13+ is about right and I wouldn’t take an 11 yo

GBJustina · 20/07/2024 18:43

If you haven’t seen the Guys & Dolls immersive at the Bridge theatre yet I HIGHLY recommend

GBJustina · 20/07/2024 18:43

Wondering if there’s a thread exclusively for the MT theatre lovers because I would be so in 😂

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 20/07/2024 18:53

I've just had a look at the Broadway listings and agree, it's all a bit same-old same-old at the moment, however Audra McDonald is opening Gypsy in November and Nicole Sheringzer (sp?) is opening Sunset Boulevard in October I think, so depending when you're going?

I also see The Book Of Mormon is still on... now this will perhaps be controversial because the language is very very adult, but actually thematically it's fine and an interesting watch. Particularly if you've seen Lion King, it's an interesting take on colonialism within musical theatre.

@CraftyYankee you might be interested to know that &Juliet is touring, playing in Manchester at the moment!

Edit: because I’m a idiot and quoted wrong post

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 20/07/2024 19:08

The Alan Cumming/jabe Horrocks version is on YouTube. A crackly recording but is fantastic. But not for kids or those of a sensitive nature

Theredjellybean · 20/07/2024 19:11

I saw it on opening night.
It's incredible show but absolutely NOT a jolly romp through some back catalogue like moulin rouge with a bit of sad bits chucked in.
It's very very dark themes and as the setting is a Berlin sex club pre second world war...I'm not sure you'd expose a tween to that.
I'd say mature 15 year old maybe...

We go at the end of October, I will try searching specifically for Sunset Boulevard.

Book of Mormon has toured near us a few times and I’ve always avoided as I’m not sure it’s my cup of tea let alone hers!

Hi OP. My son is a similar age (13) and is also running out of musicals but we saw hadestown recently and loved it. Would definitely recommend.

MrsToothyBitch · 20/07/2024 19:49

I 100% recommend Sunset Boulevard for your NYC. I saw Nicole Sherzinger do it at the Savoy and adored it!

I personally would take a child that age to see Cabaret if they seemed mature enough, including this version so it's very dependent on whether you think your Dd would understand. It certainly wouldn't be without consideration.

I think I would've been allowed to see it; my parents had shown me the film when I was in year 7 aged 11. I also engaged with a lot of material about the Holocaust at that age including the IWM exhibition at 10 which is recommended 14+. My mum was also pretty honest about sex and I think I first read a Jilly Cooper at 12. She'd have pieced together anything I didn't understand watching Cabaret. But she'd no way have taken me if she thought it would be over my head or too distressing so again, not an automatic / lax yes.

Createausername1970 · 20/07/2024 19:51

I have seen Cabaret and thought it was fab and would go again. We had a dinner reservation so we're very close to the stage. The whole experience was great. But not with a child. Quite sexual, Nazi themes, very dark.

Turmerictolly · 20/07/2024 19:54

When we saw it, you go past 'dungeons' where there are people with whips, leather basques, provocative sexual positions beckoning you in your watch. Obviously the themes are a bit dark too. It's one of my favourite musicals and 15 yr old ds was studying the Nazi's, part of which was the cultural history so it brought that part of the curriculum to light. Decadence, voyeurism, etc

ohfourfoxache · 20/07/2024 19:55

Not read full thread

Saw cabaret a few weeks ago, IT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR A 12 YEAR OLD

At all

Don’t do it - there are far more suitable shows to see

ohfourfoxache · 20/07/2024 19:58

Even Hamilton is more age appropriate than Cabaret. And the 4th word sung is “bastard”
