All women and people with a cervix every five years now smear test

justasking111 · 20/07/2024 12:35

Five years in Wales is this the norm in England, Scotland, Ireland?

Our surgery put it up on their FB page this week.

It was three years here last time I checked.

Yabu it's fine no reason to be concerned

Yanbu it's too big a gap.

That was their first bad move 25 missed too many young women.

I agree, though not sure what knock on effect it had in terms of stats, it felt reckless as younger women (eg me in that case) were suddenly too young for a smear and too old for the HPV vaccine rollout.

justasking111 · 21/07/2024 15:20

TheKeatingFive · 21/07/2024 14:40

Some of them are legally living as men

Just look at this sentence. What total nonsense. That we can now have a 'legal sex' that is different to our actual biological sex. How did we get here and why on earth does anyone think this represents 'progress'? 😵‍💫

You were warned, ignored so reported.

Agreed

People with a cervix?! couldn't be more insulted as a woman.

I think Mumsnet central asked posters to keep away from trans permissive v Gender Critical Feminist positions as the OP's intention was to discuss issues around smear tests etc.

LornaDuh · 21/07/2024 16:30

Oh come on, OP, don't be disingenuous. You knew your title would sound a klaxon.

I knew you were - quite rightly - quoting the surgery's wording. MNHQ should gave kept quiet as no guidelines were being broken so why you've reported someone is beyond me. Don't spoil the interesting discussion your thread has sparked.

Iloveeverycat · 21/07/2024 16:35

This.
Go on the other thread today about the cervical smear poster at the Dr's. Complaining that her 6 year old could see it. Then you will be on the right thread.

Iloveeverycat · 21/07/2024 16:41

I don't know how to add a link to that post but all the people who keep jumping on this thread when this thread is about the length between smears should go to this one
Poster at the GP surgery

Then I suggest they amend the OP

They're quoting verbatim what the message from the surgery said.

If people want to discuss rights/wrongs of that then they can start another thread.

Sure. But it's going to prompt discussion on that wording. If people don't like those posts, they can scroll on.

parkrun500club · 21/07/2024 17:15

I was told at my last smear that my next one would be in 3 years (which is later this year).

I'd be delighted if they changed it to 5 years, I know it's over 5 years for over 50s anyway but I was 49 when I had my last one so was told I'd be called after 3 (in England).

ZoeLoey · 21/07/2024 17:43

People with a cervix lol it's just women that have one.

Oh give over. The OP knew EXACTLY what they were doing. If they were genuinely interested in a discussion about the clinical indications for reducing the frequency of cervical smears, they would have simply titled the post ‘AIBU to ask about the changes to smear testing frequency’

It’s just been another futile attempt to push an agenda. Unless the OP is new to MN 😂

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 21/07/2024 19:03

It is mentioned as people with a cervix in the invitation letter to have a test.
Those of us who have been involved in the care and treatment of people who identify as a man who were not called for cervical screening and therefore detected late don't give a shit for all this women are women stuff in healthcare we just see someone who is far sicker than they would have otherwise been if they had been included on the screening list

OH I'm sorry, hopefully now getting the information out there will improve.

Hi all - we appreciate that not everyone agrees with the wording in the title but we feel that this point has been made several times on this thread now and further posts like this will only derail the discussion. Thanks.

Thank you @BeckyAMumsnet

It's not offensive it's NHS wording!!

I find it offensive, as I do with the phrase birthing people, chest feeders etc all NHS wording.......

I am starting to wonder if you are a TA and did this post to get a reaction.

Looked at previous comments of yours.... I was right.

It. Also. Says. All. Women.
You are massively undermining your claim to be pro women not anti trans with this nonsense.

macaroniandcheeze · 21/07/2024 08:46

It is obtuse and shitty to deliberately exclude someone from accessing medical care.

Edited

Who's being excluded exactly? Any literature will invite all biological women to attend a smear test, a medical procedure that has everything to do with biology and precisely F All to do with ideology.

The fact some people put feelings before facts is, frankly, neither here nor there.

What could have been a useful thread about an important medical procedure HAS become about language purely because 'people with cervixes' was mentioned in the OP and women are getting sick of it.

I'll say it again: if OP had only said 'women' we would ONLY be talking about smear tests.

Jumpingthruhoops · 21/07/2024 20:00

Iloveeverycat · 21/07/2024 10:22

.As a pp said, HPV can lie dormant for decades and affect anyone who's ever had sex.
You can get HPV from skin to skin contact so you can still get it even if you have never had sex.

I'd say the chance of that in relation to the amount of women being screened is very slim.

Jumpingthruhoops · 21/07/2024 20:05

justasking111 · 21/07/2024 12:54

It's not rocket science if you have a cervix get tested.

Well yes exactly, it's not rocket science. That's why it isn't necessary to remind any biological woman they have a cervix. They'll already know.
