Too similar sibling names

My daughter is Charlotte and i am expecting my second, another girl, due in October. Charlotte's middle name is Pearl and the new baby's would be Opal. I really like the name Colette and I think it goes really well with Charlotte with the similar structure but different soundings. I also like the names Chloe and Nicole but I would still strongly prefer Colette over them. Is it too similar?

I really like it, don't think they're too alike at all?

MyBluntSloth · 20/07/2024 09:10

Bushmillsbabe · 20/07/2024 09:07

The similarities/theme are in their middle names, if you are thinking is will link them together. I gave both mine middle names starting with an M to honour both their Grandma's whose first names both happen to start with an M. But first names are their identity and as such should be individual to them.

Just out of interest, does C or gems have a particular significance to you?

Both DH and I love the letter C and my middle name is also a gem name

But they're also 2 different people.

As siblings they will already have lots of things they share or have in common. There's no need to make their names match. You know one person who has a similar name who loves it, but plenty on this thread have said they hate it. Why risk it when there are so many other names you could choose?

If it has to be a C name, then there are plenty out there that are very dfferent from Charlotte. Is there a reason why you're ignoring lots of lovely suggestions such as

Camilla
Claudia
Catherine
Chloe
Caroline

Edited

Catherine is lovely, and very much of a similar classic 'ness' to Charlotte. Although with Princess Catherine having Princess Charlotte people may suggest that OP is following the royals.

For that reason I might go for Camilla, which can be shortened to Mila for day to day, so there is still the C link but it isn't too twee with Charlotte

I don’t think they are that similar. The only Colette’s I know are 50 plus, but maybe it’s making a come back. I think Charlotte is a timeless classic whereas Colette isn’t. So for me I wouldn’t put the names in a sibset but totally your choice. I don’t think they sound similar at all personally. Maybe both end with lett but when said they don’t sound the same (not in my accent accent anyway)

Interesting.

i have a lot of family who live in Paris (so I’m there regularly) and Colette (and Louise for that matter) are still common/popular for girls there.

UltramarineViolet · 20/07/2024 09:14

I'm on the fence

I can imagine Colette getting called Carlotte by people wanting to rhyme the names!

I don't think they are similar enough to attract ridicule but the similarly will definitely get remarked upon so if that is going to annoy you then I would go for something else

Please tell me neither you or partners name start with a C 😂

The gem idea is lovely then for middle names, as links them to each other and you without being too obvious. I prefer Jade/Ruby to Opal though. They are also valid names in own right if you go with a first name your child really doesn't like. I never met anyone called Opal.

SleepingStandingUp · 20/07/2024 09:14

MyBluntSloth · 20/07/2024 05:52

DH and I are set on both girls starting with C!

Genuine question. Why?

Apart from the confusion when letters come in to Miss C. Sloth, surely you're just minimising the choice of names. Charlotte got a name you like and Colette is having one that'll do cos it fits the rules.

I don't think they sound too samey, they're fine together but I think Colette is awful.

Camellia?

Beautiful3 · 20/07/2024 09:16

Too similar. When I had my 2nd, I wanted to call her a certain name. Everyone called her by it for 2 weeks. I realised my husband and I were getting tongue tied, because it was too similar to her sister's. It really naffed me off and we looked for another name that didn't share any similarity. It took 2 weeks to find something else we liked. I was annoyed because I didn't love it, but it's grown on me and can't imagine her by another name now!

Racksonracks · 20/07/2024 09:16

Way too alike, I think.

Racksonracks · 20/07/2024 09:17

Saying that, my neighbour has two sons.

Jack and Jake.

I think that takes similar to another level!

Twodozenroses · 20/07/2024 09:17

I think Charlotte has ended up with a lovely timeless and classic name and then Colette has ended up with a dated name that isn’t classy at all. And I also think they sound too similar. Although I think Chloe and Nicole are fine, I wouldn’t say they’re classy either and they’re quite 90s.

charlotte is a lovely name. I think her sister deserves a name that’s just as classic and that’s her own name, not just picked because it sounds and looks like her sisters

Oh wow that is ridiculously similar! I know of a Lucy and Louis which I always think are too similar

TeabySea · 20/07/2024 09:19

Sounds fine. The names are superficially similar, but sound different when spoken.
If you like the name, go for it.

Karatema · 20/07/2024 09:19

If you like Colette then have Colette! What does it matter? It's your family's choice 😀

I don't live in the UK and I have known multiple Opals! No neither mine or my partners name start with a C

No sorry we want something classy and elegant!

I assume you’re not in the Uk as Colette is not classy and elegant here, or old lady chic. It’s just one of those 70’s names (like my name) that’s hardly used now

KarenOnTour · 20/07/2024 09:20

I love it, Colette Opal sounds amazing and I dont thnk its soo similar to Charlotte

willWillSmithsmith · 20/07/2024 09:20

MyBluntSloth · 20/07/2024 08:42

I think its kind of special that Colette and Charlotte look similar but when spoken sounds different but i am not sure if they sound different enough

I’m not sure I’d think it was special (but that’s just my view of course).

Funnily enough I decided against a name for my second child because it ended in the same couple of letters as my first so had a very similar sounding ending. My own preference is for very different looking and sounding names but that is personal preference.

In fact I’ve just realised that my two’s names don’t share a single letter.

timoteigirl · 20/07/2024 09:20

I know of sisters Ida and Ada so to me these two names are not too similar.

As to taking a fancy to a specific initial for family members, I thought this is very common. I know families with M -names, J-names, A- names etc.

Why bother asking us for our opinions if you're just going to disagree with anyone that says what you don't want to hear?

Just call what you want, it's evident you don't actually want any input and have already made up your mind 🤷🏼‍♀️

SleepingStandingUp · 20/07/2024 09:21

MyBluntSloth · 20/07/2024 08:08

I am listening to advice there seems to be a mix of opinions here. I am also considering Annette but DH would prefer something starting with C

I'm curious which country you're in where Colette and Annette are considered classy and stylish

This!

Name your children what you would like but both names are very similar sounding! There are lots of c starting names to choose from!

My thought too, if I were Colette with a sister Charlotte, I would feel a bit cheated 😂

Chloe goes better

What about?
Claire
Caroline
Clarissa
Celeste
Caitlin
Cicely

ChubSeedsYorkie · 20/07/2024 09:24

It would be a no from me I think but I’m a bit weird and the bit that puts me off is the siblings having the same initials! (First name and surname the same). We have a Florence and one of our favourites for baby number 2 is Francesca but I’ve said no because it starts with the same letter 😂 this is very much a me thing though
