To ask for a national campaign to stop adults referring to their "tummy"

OptimismvsRealism · 19/07/2024 09:33

Still absolutely fine to talk to children about tummies

But adults need to know that it is never ever ever ever ever ok to say "my tummy hurts"

Ever, ok?

I prefer tummy.

Gut rot gives me the instant rage and don't even get me started on belly.

What's wrong with stomach ? I have a stomach ache is perfectly fine.

But a stomach ache isn't in your stomach. It's lower, in the gut. Your stomach is way up at the bottom of your ribs.

Tummy ache is slangy. But stomach ache is wrong!

Cleavagecleavagecleavage · 19/07/2024 10:01

@Mrsjayy tummy describes the general area, stomach describes an internal organ…tummy is not inaccurate

x2boys · 19/07/2024 10:01

Tummy time ,Tummy to mummy .

MartyFunkhouser · 19/07/2024 10:02

I agree - see also grown-arse adults referring to being ‘poorly’ or having a ‘sniffle’.

BusyCM · 19/07/2024 10:02

Is it belly button?
Tummy button?
Navel?
Stomach button?

Woman at work says poorly sick...she's in her 50's. She also says lickle

Goldengirl123 · 19/07/2024 10:04

And belly is even worse!!!!!!

Anything is better than belly

💯

The number of people who say "belly" yet also say they're "poorly" 🤢

That makes it more accurate - very few people can discern which organ their pain originates from!

NervousSubject · 19/07/2024 10:05

Yes, but only if we can add adults who say ‘boobs’, or refer to their breasts as ‘baps’, ‘jugs’, ‘chesticles’, ‘the girls’ ‘the twins’, or ‘the puppies’.

TigathaChristie · 19/07/2024 10:05

Poorly is an excellent word.

Some of you may need to sit down - I sometimes have a poorly tummy 😂

HousedInMySoul · 19/07/2024 10:05

Can we also ban 'yummy' and 'nasties' please 🙏

This drives me mad. Stomach is a smallish organ in the upper part of the abdomen. The rest is abdomen divided into 4 quadrants. Upper right and left, lower right and left. Important for telephone consults. Talking about stomach ache when you mean abdominal pain is confusing.

As a woman in my 50s I’d like to distance myself from your colleague as much as possible!

lickle????? 😡

Yes but when you're ringing in sick to work, your manager doesn't need an exact location of the pain! 😁

And if it's a Dr you're talking too, I'd expect them to draw their own conclusions after an examination.

I'm with you, OP. It is a revolting, cloying word, when used by adults, unless children are being spoken to, etc.

It is also annoyingly inaccurate - as "tummy" is a childish abbreviation/substitute for stomach, and usually the area described as having a "tummy ache" (barf) is the lower abdomen and nowhere near the stomach.

You would be lucky to get as far as an examination these days. Telephone and online consults are first line, so describing the location of your pain accurately will save time.

NervousSubject · 19/07/2024 10:14

Do women with tummies also have hubbies? I suspect so.

Demonhunter · 19/07/2024 10:15

Just to give the belly haters nightmares 😂
