TEACHERS! What do they want?!

What can I get? I'm also buying for the office staff and after school club. I'm thinking Costa vouchers but lots of them with small amounts on? Or a few bigger amounts they can share out? Or something else. I've seen teachers moaning on here about the 'tat' they get so I want to get something usable and decent. A very small, lovely school and I want to show my appreciation.

why??

because they use an image of someone bare chested after a double mastectomy to sell their coffee. in the picture the person is waving their arms in the air, in a way many people who have had a double mastectomy never will again. The whole impression is that a double mastectomy is a fun lifestyle option, not a disabling and painful treatment for cancer

I’d go easy on the personalised mugs, photo frames, tote bags etc. over the years you start to realise that everything in your house has your name or ‘best teacher’ on 😂 It’s lovely but you start to run out of space…

A nice pack of goodies for the staff room, a multipack of glue sticks for the classroom (no you shouldn’t have to but yes schools have no money and teachers are often buying these things with their own cash), a voucher for John Lewis if you’re clubbing together with other parents.

But above all a ‘thank you’ is the best recognition of all.

Jazzjazzyjulez · 19/07/2024 09:27

I always go with vouchers and a small gift (Christmas ornament, plant pot etc)

I do £20 M&S for main teacher, £10 Costa for TA and gym teachers, £5 Costa for club leaders/helpers. It always goes down well. Who doesn't want a voucher for a drunk and cake.

junebirthdaygirl · 19/07/2024 09:29

Always like a plant or a book token : straight to the bookshop to treat myself on the first day of the holidays. Nice handcream was always welcome too. My dd loved to root in my stash for notebooks/ pens/ chocs etc over the years. Now l am retiring so appreciate l have a great amount of nice candles that will be useful going forward now my days of getting more are over.
l genuinely never minded if l didn't get a gift so absolutely no pressure on anyone.

dottiedodah · 19/07/2024 09:30

I think that Costa Vouchers indivdual would go down well. My cousin is a teacher and would love this . A nice latte or hot chocolate yum!

MiddleAgedDread · 19/07/2024 09:31

@confusedaunt ah right, I've never seen or heard of that!

Bluevelvetsofa · 19/07/2024 09:35

It really is a gift beyond price to send a card with a personal message and to email the head if you are thankful for the year your child has had with the teacher. It can help towards their appraisal and it’s a good thing for heads to know when and how much their staff are appreciated. The head and SLT too, if they’ve been helpful.

I once had a stone paperweight, decorated by the child that sat on my windowsill for years. I recently found a fridge magnet that was very personal too. It really is the thought, and knowing that what you’ve done for a child has been appreciated.

dottiedodah · 19/07/2024 09:36

Would also add that my DC clubbed together and bought some restaurant vouchers ,tea out coupons ,and some tickets for the local theatre, Have been ill so appreciated these very much!( just some more ideas here) my cousin said she liked these ideas and would appreciate them.she would not expect them .

I don't see that as the message at all.

no costa vouchers please - very upsetting for staff who have had cancer

Oh give it a rest!

Stop trying to pretend this isn't a dig at transmen.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 19/07/2024 09:46

I asked about this a few weeks ago, was told by the vast majority that teachers appreciate a handmade note, letters of appreciation etc, as opposed to a material gift. I followed the advice and it's seems to have landed well!

I can think of 2 Teacher colleagues who have had cancer, and one who is currently undergoing treatment, who would be very pleased to recieve a Costa voucher as a gift.

noblegiraffe · 19/07/2024 09:50

Costa raise a lot of money for Macmillan.

neverbeenskiing · 19/07/2024 09:52

I'm not a Teacher but work in a school. Over the years I've been given Amazon, M&S and JL vouchers, flowers, chocolates, wine, posh coffee, Costa vouchers, nice stationary and candles. I appreciate any gifts and certainly don't expect them. The ones I treasure most are cards and notes with heartfelt messages about the difference I've made, especially those written y the kids themselves. I keep these in a box and get them out when I'm having a tricky work week and it reminds me why I do what I do.

DoAClassicCamel · 19/07/2024 09:56

I never bought a teacher anything, I spoke with them to thank them for their support and hard work. Teachers themselves say a card is sufficient.

dootball · 19/07/2024 10:03

I do know that at our school technically we are not supposed to accept gifts of cash or vouchers from parents, we are supposed to pass them on to the school, who use them to raise money for the school charity!

StJanetof · 19/07/2024 10:05

A mug that says “World’s Best Teacher”.

Backtoanoldname · 19/07/2024 10:14

As a secondary teacher I got little - presents seem to be a primary school thing.

The best were hand written notes, from pupils, on scraps of paper.

Other notable ones.....

Pupil who came back 18 months later after joining the army. 6" taller, firm handshake. 'Sorry for being an arse Sir" ( he wasn't that much anyway)

Out on the night I'd retired. Man in his early 50s came across.
"Are you Mr Backtomyoldname?" Yes. Had a chat.
"Thanks for teaching me, your work led me to what I am now" builder/developer.

5 mins later bottle of Champagne turns up at table. Great start to retirement.

Write to the Head/Governors/Trust Exec to sing the praises of the teacher. That would be amazing.

Yes! this

Maddy70 · 19/07/2024 10:17

A letter to the head explaining the impact of them on your Child is honestly the best thing you can do. Teachers are undervalued also wine

I always buy my teacher friends those pens with 4 different colours of ink for xmas.....it started as a bit of a joke about them being "teacher pens" but now it's become a thing.

DH is a secondary teacher and he loves those pens, I always put one in his Christmas stocking! This year he received a restaurant gift voucher from his class (hope he takes me). Also several individual gifts including a home made cake, a hand drawn portrait and various teas and chocolates. He appreciates them all very much, but possibly his favourite gift was a photo from a class trip he took them on with a lovely message written on the back.

Phineyj · 19/07/2024 10:18

Heartfelt handwritten thank you card. If you must buy a gift, post it notes!

Neither.
