TEACHERS! What do they want?!

What can I get? I'm also buying for the office staff and after school club. I'm thinking Costa vouchers but lots of them with small amounts on? Or a few bigger amounts they can share out? Or something else. I've seen teachers moaning on here about the 'tat' they get so I want to get something usable and decent. A very small, lovely school and I want to show my appreciation.

One of my students recently gave me a really nice pen. The school ones are really low quality so it has made me feel very luxurious!

But you're on the right track with the notes. That's what makes me cry and those are what I remember as I keep them in a bit album to look back on when I need a pick me up.

SauvignonBlonk · 19/07/2024 06:24

Words mean more than gifts to teachers: to find out it’s all been worth it!!!!

confusedaunt · 19/07/2024 06:27

no costa vouchers please - very upsetting for staff who have had cancer

Purplepeoniesdroppingpetals · 19/07/2024 06:31

I’ve just cleared out my room for end of year and the only thing I lingered on was the cards from parents and kids that I read and enjoyed again. Don’t buy gifts; instead, send really heartfelt cards.

wineandsunshine · 19/07/2024 06:31

Teacher here - definitely personal letters or cards. They mean so much.

ParentPerson · 19/07/2024 07:01

As a teacher, the most significant gifts are cards with heartfelt words in. No presents needed.

Greengreengrass972 · 19/07/2024 07:07

Definitely a handwritten heartfelt note. Second to that - wine, chocolates and vouchers always go down well!

Seashor · 19/07/2024 07:34

The things I’ve kept are the notes and letters from parents and grandparents. The gifts I love are sponsorships for a third world child to attend school.

Kneeslikethese · 19/07/2024 07:41

We can't share a large Costa voucher because no one has time to go to Costa for everyone.
Individual vouchers of a small amount are great.
Honestly I've never had to buy my own glue sticks or any other equipment so these gifts always puzzle me a bit.
Bubble bath, wine, chocolate, candles etc are always very welcome.
Tbh I have cupboards full of random heart ornaments and glasses/mugs saying best teacher.
Best thing is really a nice card.

I want your child to have manners and behave appropriately and with respect. That's all.

Tbh, this!

But I agree that the best gifts are the cards from children thanking you for everything they've done, telling you that you're the best (and most beautiful- obviously!) teacher they've ever had and that they'll miss you.

Just a thank you for everything you have done this year from a parent in the playground is enough.

OldChinaJug · 19/07/2024 07:48

I haven't bought a mug for years. I rely on end of year Best Teacher mugs to replenish my stock!

Livedandlearned · 19/07/2024 07:48

Never one of those my teacher is the best things from the shop.

Like others have said a little card is lovely.

Collexifon · 19/07/2024 07:50

I didn't buy anything for any teachers ever! I said thank you and have a lovely summer.

When dd3 left school I bought a pastoral lead a bottle of champagne.

Noone died and my kids have lots of happy memories from school.

MrMW · 19/07/2024 07:55

I'm a male teacher. Cards are best, especially the "My child has really enjoyed being in your class."
Best gift has been when a "class rep" has collected and bought a voucher, plus you don't know how much people put in so it feels more like it's from everyone.
Never chocolates, my family just steal them.

Wine. We like wine. But seriously a card and a rose or something small is lovely

Twoshoesnewshoes · 19/07/2024 09:01

I bought pukka tea bag selection box for the staff room one year and was told this was very well received.

Absolutely nothing.

Are you a teacher or just bitter someone gets thanks for their job?

Collexifon · 19/07/2024 09:03

My friend bought wine for her class teacher for 3 years (three kids) then found out she was teetotal 😆

I didn't buy anything. I said thanks. All this consumerism is stupid.

We did a video with messages from all the children and saying why they loved the teacher and what they enjoyed most this year.

Well good for you. My child’s teacher and TAs were spectacular this year. They took a child who at the beginning of the year looked like he’d need SEN school sooner rather than later and have worked so incredibly hard that he now can manage being in the classroom as well as his NT classmates. That deserved more than a passing ‘thanks for doing your job’.

To all teachers going that extra mile - thank you. It’s more than a job, you’re changing children’s lives.

WigglyVonWaggly · 19/07/2024 09:10

As a teacher, I’d say a lovely mug with a message about how great they are (always nice to use in front of the headteacher), an easy care plant that can be taken home in a car, a card which both you and the child have written a message in or a bookshop voucher would all be absolutely lovely and lasting things to receive. For a group of teachers, the pukka teas ideas is amazing or nice packs of biscuits.

SophieJo · 19/07/2024 09:15

I believe any form of alcohol is very well received as well as a hand written card or letter.

MiddleAgedDread · 19/07/2024 09:15

I always buy my teacher friends those pens with 4 different colours of ink for xmas.....it started as a bit of a joke about them being "teacher pens" but now it's become a thing.
