To think the judge was right to throw the book at Just Stop Oil?

StripedPiggy · 18/07/2024 19:30

Five Just Stop Oil activists, including leader & XR founder Roger Hallam have been sentenced to up to 5 years in jail for blocking the M25 & other main roads.
Their intention was to cause gridlock on roads in the South East. The disruption they caused resulted in people missing medical appointments, flights & business meetings.

Well done to that judge. The criminal justice system is right to pass serious sentences on these fanatics which will act as a strong deterrent to others who might try to cause mass disruption, and put people’s lives in danger, to further a political agenda, whatever it might be.

They are an absolute menace to society. Well done that judge

TeaAndTattoos · 18/07/2024 19:32

Good about time something was done about those lunatics.

MissMoneyFairy · 18/07/2024 19:33

Absolutely agree but they won't serve their full sentences and will be hailed as heroes by some activists.

Gingerisgoodforyou · 18/07/2024 19:34

They've been driven to action by the inaction of all other channels. The impact of climate change will be far greater than a minor traffic jam inconvenience.

I think a jail sentence is disproportionate- we hear prisons are overcrowded and there's no room, and these people aren't a danger to the public (unless they've done this multiple times already and will reoffend, I don't see why a community sentence couldn't be used).

Tbh I'd like to see prison sentences for major polluters rather than protesters.

This. Don’t understand how prison is proportionate for blocking traffic.

Please have a day off. Have you ever been in a palace these people have just left? They are filthy animals that leave their PLASTIC water bottles and rubbish dumped among fag butts of both varieties.

I do think 80 hour weeks cleaning the streets would be a far better sentence than a nice warm bed at his majesties pleasure though.

I 100% agree with this.

MissMoneyFairy · 18/07/2024 19:41

Their action is a danger to the public though, blocking roads creates a knock on effect. Emergency workers get delayed, emergency vehicles can't get through, patients miss hospital appointments, vital medicines and equipment get delayed. People are forced to sit in their cars without food water, toilets. They are a menace . What community service could they be ordered to do, clean up the paint spills and wilful damage to art and property they've caused?

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 18/07/2024 19:43

It's not just 'blocking traffic'. They cost the Met Police £1.5million which could've been used for better use, the 50k hours of vehicle delay, economic cost of £756k. The inconvenience to people just trying to go about their day. Their actions might've caused deaths.

You don't get to behave like that no matter how noble you think the cause is. I don't care for what they stand for even though I'd probably agree, their actions make me not interested as they are morons.

S0livagant · 18/07/2024 19:43

I think it's disproportionate compared to what men get for domestic violence.

'Minor traffic jam'?

I'm sure the families of anyone who died will be comforted by your words... 🙄

Agreed.

Their actions are totally counter productive in any case. Someone trying to trash works of art or historical documents is the fastest way to put me off a cause.

Here’s the same judge giving someone a suspended sentence for deliberately crashing into the gates of Downing Street and possession of indecent images of children aged 8-12. So no, I don’t think 5 years for a peaceful protest is proportionate.

Police inspecting a car outside the Downing Street gates

Downing Street crash man handed suspended prison sentence

Seth Kneller crashed into the gates of Downing Street in May, causing panic in Whitehall.

To all critics, please tell us how climate activists can 1. Get their cause into the headlines and 2. Get the attention of decision makers and try to get them to understand the severity of the issue

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 18/07/2024 19:50

Roger Hallam is a hypocrite arsehole who has what, five diesel vehicles on his farm with his poorly insulated house. Along with his remarks about the holocaust. He can get in the fucking bin. Or jail in this case.

MotherofChaosandDestruction · 18/07/2024 19:51

These prison sentences are so laughably disproportionate it's actually making me cross. We have men in possession of 1000s of category A child abuse images who get community service.

I don't agree with their tactics but at least they are trying to save our planet - what world do we live in where rapists and child abusers get less prison time and more leniency than people who are dedicated to saving the human race. Let us die out now FGS.

Beth216 · 18/07/2024 19:51

'Two lorries collided, and a police motorcyclist came off his bike during one of the protests on 9 November 2022 while trying to bring traffic to a halt in a “rolling road block.'

They put people in danger and I'm glad they got what they deserved. All they're doing is alienating people so they're shooting themselves in the foot the idiots. Other crimes should be given more time but that doesn't stop me being happy about this outcome.

It's a mirror of the issue of so called illegal immigrants. There is no legal route from Europe so desperate people will do whatever it takes. These activists are desperate. They have exhausted every other avenue to create a real dialogue. No one will look back in 50 years and think oh gosh those traffic jams were a real menace. Our children will pay the price for our ignorance and inaction.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 18/07/2024 19:52

  1. Their cause doesn't make headlines, their cunty actions do, and turn people off.
  2. Decisions makers are never going to 'understand the severity' of the issue as a result of what they do. What they do isn't going to change policy. Ever. They are a hindrance.
Shakeoffyourchains · 18/07/2024 19:52

YABVU to celebrate this. Regardless of your feelings about their cause this is a very dark day for civil rights and justice. Let's just hope this isn't the start of a very slippery slope.
