Can you demand a GP surgery see you sooner than 2 weeks ?

I had am MRI last week and They've sent me a text

'Could you please book a routine appointment to discuss MRI scan results'

But they don't an appointment for 2 weeks so I've got tl worry for 2 weeks and there could be something seriously wrong ! Why make me wait 2 weeks to give me results??

I've looked on my NHS app no results are showing

I think its cruel to cause someone anxiety like this

Aww, that's awful Flowers
I really, really hope it's positive news. Could it be that they would tell you sooner if not? Or am I being incredibly naive? Confused

Psychologymam · 18/07/2024 13:30

Sounds like something they may want to follow up but not particularly urgent (one hopes!). Things should move quicker when it’s urgent but I totally understand your worry and frustration - it’s not a good communication system.

ScottBakula · 18/07/2024 13:33

I have had this kind of thing too, it's annoying and worrying.
Can you get a phone consultation sooner ?

NoTouch · 18/07/2024 13:33

If it was something urgent I would assume they would say book an urgent appointment, rather than specifically say "routine". So I would personally take that as good news there was nothing serious.

Treewheel · 18/07/2024 13:33

@inthedarkx call them and explain how anxious and upset you are and that you just want to know whether anything is particularly wrong.

it is a disgrace and I would call them each day explaining this until you get through to someone with a backbone and some decency

UnpoachedPears · 18/07/2024 13:36

YANBU

brunettemic · 18/07/2024 13:36

2 weeks? 3 minimum at our GP, count yourself lucky.

Symphony830 · 18/07/2024 13:39

I can’t ever wait two weeks to discuss anything health related, so I never do.

I’d be ringing up asking for a print out and notes attached (doubt a GP would be analysing it…surely this would have already been done - and anything concerning flagged).

I always apologise for being so overly anxious and the medical secretaries are usually very sympathetic. Whilst they aren’t able to advise they can certainly read out the notes which doesn’t take long.

Spirallingdownwards · 18/07/2024 13:43

The fact it says routine appointment indicates there is no rush and nothing to worry about

Billybagpuss · 18/07/2024 13:43

On the upside if it was serious they would bump you up the queue.

do you have the nhs app? Have they published the results yet?

Ratfinkstinkypink · 18/07/2024 13:43

If it was serious they would let you know, it sounds more like a routine follow up.

Anonym00se · 18/07/2024 13:46

I promise, it if was serious they call you and ask you to come in straight away with a family member. I’ve had them call me to make an appointment in three days to discuss results. I didn’t sleep for those three nights, and it turned out I just had low folate and needed supplements. Try not to worry.

JollyGreenSnake · 18/07/2024 13:49

Like others, I expect the instruction to make a routine appointment suggests there is no life-threatening findings on the scan.
It may also suggest that MRI findings are essentially normal, and therefore won't really explain any symptoms/conditions that led to your having the scan.

User016529 · 18/07/2024 13:52

I’m sure if it was anything urgent you’d be seeing the consultant and sooner.

unknowntome · 18/07/2024 13:56

routine appt here is 7 weeks!

I agree with you OP it's cruel to make people wait, two weeks to a person waiting for results feels like 2 months

Treewheel · 18/07/2024 13:59

brunettemic · 18/07/2024 13:36

@brunettemic your GP surgery being more shit than OP’s doesn’t make OP’s any less shit.

theemmadilemma · 18/07/2024 14:04
  1. You may be able to see on the NHS App.
  2. I would trust that you would have not been asked to have booked a routine appointment if there was anything of urgency to treat. They usually are good at calling you straight in if they need to.

seriously. GP surgeries are under tremendous pressure. harassing them like this will be wasting their time and slowing down things for other patients

@inthedarkx OP if they asked you to book a routine appointment, chances are that it's nothing that can't wait. probably something minor. I understand it's unnerving but unless your symptoms have suddenly gotten worse/something else is going on, I would wait the two weeks

listsandbudgets · 18/07/2024 14:09

Don't worry OP. They probably just want to reassure you, check up on you and maybe refer you for some different tests if things haven't improved

The one time they had anything really serous to tell me they phoned me and asked me to come in same day - I was a nervous wreck by the time I got there 2 hours later!

A routine appointment is almost certainly a routine discussion they nearly always phone and talk to you with anything nasty

I completely understand you worrying I would too Flowers

I had this as well OP

Two Week Cancer Pathway (just to check, as I have had cancer before) referral for a Endoscopy and a CTi scan.
I, too, waited for a few weeks and got the same message as You
All was fine and I hope its all fine for you as well.

IHateGeckosGarage · 18/07/2024 14:12

I understand your worry. I honestly think you don't have anything to be concerned about though.

I had an mri and was called the next day to go back in for another scan. It was later that day I was told i had a brain tumour.

If you had anything to worry about they would have an idea straight away and, if serious, they would not leave you waiting two weeks.

IwillNOTplayfastandloosewithpublicfinances · 18/07/2024 14:12

I really don’t think they would use the word ‘routine’ if there was anything to worry about.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/07/2024 14:14

I’d read that as positive. Routine means non-urgent to me.

Superscientist · 18/07/2024 14:18

My fil had a 2 month wait to discuss his results with a consultant. We assumed it was a positive sign. It wasn't, he had cancer and in that time it went from monitoring to needing surgery quickly as it was aggressive to avoid it becoming inoperable.

I think I would give the GP surgery a call to see if there is any way of getting in sooner.

NorthernBelles · 18/07/2024 14:20

If it was serious, I think you'd have to go in to see the consultant, not your GP. However, in your case I'd be ringing up for a same day appointment and ambushing the GP with a discussion about the MRI! Probably morally wrong but there you go.
