Can you demand a GP surgery see you sooner than 2 weeks ?

I had am MRI last week and They've sent me a text

'Could you please book a routine appointment to discuss MRI scan results'

But they don't an appointment for 2 weeks so I've got tl worry for 2 weeks and there could be something seriously wrong ! Why make me wait 2 weeks to give me results??

I've looked on my NHS app no results are showing

I think its cruel to cause someone anxiety like this

What on earth are you going to do with a print out? Scans need specialist interpretation not googling to guess the significance, I've had 15y of medicine and still find myself asking what does xxx mean on this scan

Do you think the GP knows how to interpret them? That has already been done before they report back to the GP.

I had this as well OP

Two Week Cancer Pathway (just to check, as I have had cancer before) referral for a Endoscopy and a CTi scan.
I, too, waited for a few weeks and got the same message as You
All was fine and I hope its all fine for you as well.

I saw my GP 2 weeks ago who said they'd be making me a 2ww referral for gyne cancers and today I've had to chase whether the referral has actually been made.

It's so bloody frustrating isn't it?

For most things I actually don't mind waiting weeks to months. Things that are chronic but non urgent. But cancer, come on!

anonqrtb · 18/07/2024 15:13

If they are classing it as a routine 2 week appointment, its because your results aren't a worry. If it was serious they would call you in much much sooner - count it as a blessing!

PoliteCritic · 18/07/2024 15:17

But cancer is not a routine appointment.

RosesAndHellebores · 18/07/2024 15:23

None of us onow what the op's results are or how her practice would handle them.

I've had a couple of MRI scans in the last few years: I don't give consent for the scan unless they agree to cc me on the copy of the assessing clinicians report. The report is my personal data and they cannot statutorily withold it - in the contextnof personal data the BMA guidelines do not prevail.

I insist now because previously a GP told me there wasn't a problem. There was, albeit not cancer but nevertheless a chronic condition and its treatment was delayed due to incompetence.

BobbyBiscuits · 18/07/2024 15:26

@RoyalCorgi yeah, I guess there is something that needs discussion, but if it would be a case of halving the person's life expectancy by making them wait 2 weeks I doubt they'd be that cruel? Sorry, extreme example. I'm just saying it's not the worst I'd imagine.

@inthedarkx call them and explain how anxious and upset you are and that you just want to know whether anything is particularly wrong.

it is a disgrace and I would call them each day explaining this until you get through to someone with a backbone and some decency

Don't be this much of a bell end.

Treewheel · 18/07/2024 15:30

Don't be this much of a bell end.

@VeterinaryCareAssistant fingers crossed you’re not working in this sector 🤞

EraOfTheGrey · 18/07/2024 15:31

I had a MRI last week and the results showed up on my NHS Hospital App. I don't really understand the medical terms for most of what it says but I got the gist. I can also see that I've been referred on to another specialist. Does your Hospital trust have their own App?

QueenOfHiraeth · 18/07/2024 15:34

I know it is scary but, honestly, don't think you need to worry.
The message says "routine" which is medical-speak for not urgent, if there was something concerning they would have fitted you in as urgent

50plusproblems · 18/07/2024 15:37

I’ve recently had the same thing with waiting for results. Pp’s are correct - if it was bad news or something urgent, the text would have said urgent appointment, or they would have rang you to make an appointment, and it would be within a few days time. Routine, means they have the results and want to discuss them with you and any next steps/referrals if necessary.

Bournetilly · 18/07/2024 15:44

It says routine so unlikely to be serious, if it was serious they would contact you.

Shityshitybangbang · 18/07/2024 15:57

Iv been getting regular ct scans every three months since A august last year. The normal waiting time for me has been 2 weeks after. Good or bad news they will see you face to face, well in most cases.
I have also waited 8 weeks on scan results as well. Good luck it’s a worrying time.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 18/07/2024 16:13

That sounds promising.
I had a call from my GP surgery post scan to say they needed to see me asap. When I asked when was there an appt I was told just come today and we will see you when you get here.....

goneaway2 · 18/07/2024 16:18

You could try phoning the hospital and ask to speak to a nurse in the department that requested the MRI. I've found they are very helpful and some can interprete the results for you. Usally takes it a week or two for the results to be looked at and discussed by the consultants anyway.

TroysMammy · 18/07/2024 16:22

If it was serious the GP would have had notification within 24 hours, maybe within a few hours of the scan and they would be ringing you straight away to come in to see them.

TeenLifeMum · 18/07/2024 16:24

brunettemic · 18/07/2024 13:36

2 weeks? 3 minimum at our GP, count yourself lucky.

For contrast, I get same day appointments so it’s not good enough just because it’s not as bad as your experience. This is appalling.

CuntRYMusicStar · 18/07/2024 16:31

On the 21 June I was asked to make an urgent blood test appointment. I am booked for 30 July. I've given up stressing and caring. The nhs is broken beyond repair.

AddictedToBooks · 18/07/2024 16:41

I had an MRI scan a few months ago and they discovered something very wrong and they actually called me and gave me an urgent appointment.
I've had other scans etc where things were fine and I was told to book routine appointments.
I can totally understand your anxiety though.
Wishing you the best of luck and I hope this eases your anxiety a bit

brunettemic · 18/07/2024 17:09

BettyBoobles · 18/07/2024 14:43

Not helpful

I wasn’t trying to be helpful, just an observation. If there was a serious issue then OP wouldn’t have to wait. Of course, there’s the other option of acting like a grown up and actually contacting her GP to sort it but like many on MN that doesn’t appear to be an option.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 18/07/2024 17:11

Routine means nothing to worry about

PrincessMee · 18/07/2024 17:31

It's a routine appointment. That means there is nothing severely wrong !

Ghost2 · 18/07/2024 17:31

Go private if you want faster results

ODFOx · 18/07/2024 17:36

If they needed to speak to you urgently they would have contacted you with an appointment time or told you to book an urgent appointment. The 'book a routine appointment' text is code for 'there's something on the scan but it is not urgent so don't take up an urgent appointment'. Try not to worry (much easier said than done I know) . The Dr has triaged you based on your results and decided that you aren't an urgent case. It isn't bad news.

Boomer55 · 18/07/2024 17:37

If it was urgent, they would have booked an urgent phone call at least.
