Nursery workers drinking at lunchtime.

Brendathedoll · 18/07/2024 13:12

Had a rare day off yesterday so went for a pub lunch with my sister. In there I saw 2 nursery nurses from my child’s daycare having lunch and they each had a glass of wine. There were also 2 empty glasses in the table but possibly from previous customers. I wasn’t happy but my sister says it’s there lunchtime they don’t get paid for and 2 glasses won’t make any difference. They saw me and looked a bit sheepish but it means I can’t report them anon now. I’m scared if I say something they would treat my child differently. Am I being ott thinkinb they shouldn’t drink while caring for kids?

I would bet that the staff members would not have a lunch break nearly long enough to go and have a meal and glass of wine. I wouldn’t worry about it. I can only imagine they were not going to work after their lunch.

@Catandsquirrel .... IF!

That's what 'hypothetical' means, yes.

Completely inappropriate and I would report. How did they get there? If they had 2 glasses each, they'd have had more than the legal driving limit. It's also illegal to work in a nursery under the influence of alcohol. If someone is careless enough to break the law on their lunch break, I wouldn't want them looking after my children.

This with bells on

Iseeyoupekingduck · 19/07/2024 20:18

They were probably off for the afternoon.

Do you apply that rule to parents too? They are not allowed a drink while they're 'on duty' looking after their children at home? I would be willing to bet that the vast majority of children will have seen their parents enjoying a drink at home. It's amazing that parents are always willing to apply far stricter rules to those who are looking after their children than they apply to themselves.

It’s completely different having a few drinks at home than being paid to look after someone else’s children . If these women were on lunch break it is completely unacceptable. Looking after a group of small children is a huge responsibility and it is simply not acceptable to be drinking on your lunch break. Would you think it ok for a teacher or nurse or doctor to drink at lunch ? I doubt it. It’s the same thing. If they were on a day off it’s obviously fine

How often do you see people drinking non alcoholic wine in a pub? You don't, because it's vile. Beer or prosecco, sure, but not wine. They were drinking wine.

They may or may not have been on their second glass (irrelevant IMO - one is too much at work, any number is fine if not), they may or may not have been going back to work, but on the balance of probabilities, they were drinking wine.

My husbands gran drinks non alcoholic wine in the pub every times shes there, she enjoys it but you, personally, think its vile.

I knock back sambucca shots like water but others think they are vile. Id rather die of dehydration than drink Irn Bru because its vile.

Its almost as if everyone has different tastes 🙄

And is all over Facebook

AnonDadUK · 19/07/2024 20:29

Do you ever have a drink whilst looking after your children / or between meetings at work etc?

Julimia · 19/07/2024 20:35

Oh do get a grip. These ladies were in a public place being civilised in their time. They value their jobs and you are totally undermining them with your over reaction. Why report them they were in a public place not swigging diwn a back ally.

DiscoBeat · 19/07/2024 20:38

If you don't know the glasses were theirs and you also don't know if they had the afternoon off I'd butt out of it.

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 19/07/2024 21:10

I hope the staff aren't likely to see this in the media and could put the 2 and 2 together.

You are right to be concerned sure, but I highly doubt they would be seen so close to work drinking during shift. Likely to be a day of and having a good chinwag.

bloodyhellKen22 · 19/07/2024 21:12

I'm thinking it was more likely they were off together for the day. You saw two people that work at the nursery, not in their uniform having lunch together and you're assuming they're drinking on the job. 🙄

bloodyhellKen22 · 19/07/2024 21:21

@getsomehelp but the op has said she doesn't know if they were at work that day?

I actually can't believe these comments. The poor nursery workers were probably just friends enjoying some time off. I'd be so annoyed if I was being reported for enjoying my free time.

I feel it's highly unlikely that the nursery workers would be drinking on their lunch break somewhere so close to their workplace! Also, even an hour isn't really enough time to order, eat and drink.

And thus someone's career could be in jeopardy because OP judged based on little facts!

Charmatt · 19/07/2024 21:28

Given the working time directive, they could be short staffed but the 2 workers could still be off.

In my experience, most nursery workers only get half an hour lunch, so it's unlikely they could get there and drink that much in that time.

Maybe they were on a half day?

betterangels · 19/07/2024 21:30

I hope the staff aren't likely to see this in the media and could put the 2 and 2 together.

It might be good if they did so they know some parent is questioning their professional judgment online based on absolutely nothing.

Coastgirl22 · 19/07/2024 17:54

Nursery owner - completely unacceptable, it’s in our employment policies no alcohol or drugs during working hours or close enough to working hours to be noticeable, in the judgement of manager - It’s gross misconduct here - you must report it. Their judgement would be affected after even a small amount of alcohol which puts the children at risk. I’m shocked tbh! Beyond unprofessional.

Absolutely! Why wouldn't you if your child was at the nursery? A couple of drinks at lunch time plus a meal would make you less alert. That split second could mean a life or death situation.

Even without alcohol, I always feel more tired after eating lunch.

Cel77 · 19/07/2024 21:33

Maybe they were not working that day? Or they had finished their shift?
That's probably the reason otherwise it would be rather strange...

True and it does certainly raise awareness.
Again, could be a day off so could be fussy over nothing.

Nanny1965 · 19/07/2024 18:17

Could it of been alcohol free or perhaps a different soft drink in a wine glass

Unlikely they would serve a soft drink in a wine glass.
Usually a tall tumbler with ice.

BurntBroccoli · 19/07/2024 21:37

@Bluebirdover

"Apparently not according to @TheQueenWhoNeverWas who appears to be the font of all knowledge when it comes to alcohol free wines..."

The OP could easily contact the pub to check... quick phone call.

So staff aren't even allowed to eat lunch now in case it makes them sleepy?

Wtf?!

betterangels · 19/07/2024 21:47

Even without alcohol, I always feel more tired after eating lunch.

So, you think staff will be more alert if they don't eat? Make it make sense.
