If you don't reach for your phone the moment you wake up, what do you do?

I have to have at least an hour between waking up and getting out of bed for the day.

I can't remember a time when I had to wake up and get up straight away or in a short space of time.

I'm never late because I set my alarm super early to build in lolling and phone time.

I'm on my phone the whole time. Checking social media, a bit of YouTube, a bit of Mumsnet.

Nothing enriching or valuable.

If you do some thing other than doom scroll when you wake up, what is it, and how can I develop it?

Help needed please!!

Cuppa and finish what I was watching on tv the night before.

SwanRivers · 15/07/2024 12:54

I don't take my phone to bed anyway, as we have a landline for emergencies.

I snooze my alarm once, get up, go to the loo, go downstairs and pop the kettle on, sort the dogs etc.

I normally look at my phone once I'm sitting down with my tea and that's just to check for messages.

Lemonyyy · 15/07/2024 12:54

If I had a lie in I would read a book or do a crossword. I’ve been teaching myself cryptic crosswords so probably a quick cryptic, which I could finish in that hour. If I set my alarm deliberately early I would go back to sleep 😂

FionnulaTheCooler · 15/07/2024 12:55

I don't take my phone to the bedroom, except on rare occasions when DH is away overnight in case of fire/an intruder during the night. I get up and go straight in the shower to wake me up.

Lemonyyy · 15/07/2024 12:55

With a big mug of tea, ideally that someone else has made!!

RaspberryBeretxx · 15/07/2024 12:56

I often do the phone thing but when I don’t I read my kindle or meditate (I tend to find a meditation on YouTube so a bit of phone use involved).

TheMithrasDirective · 15/07/2024 12:57

It's 50/50 whether I reach for my phone and do as you do or my Kindle and read for a bit. I feel better when I read my Kindle, though.

If phone, I do Wordle, Connections and Spelling Bee, then check emails, quick flick through news and then Mumsnet.

Petitchat · 15/07/2024 12:57

What about a bit of gentle exercise instead of doom scrolling ?

keylimedog · 15/07/2024 12:57

I wake up, pay attention to the source of my waking (a cat!), then just stay there for a minute or two. Then I pop to the bathroom, sort out my face / teeth / toileting needs. After this it's downstairs, feed the cats, empty the dishwasher, pop some fresh bird food out (they're eating me out of house and home right now!) and make myself a coffee or cup of tea.

Then it's back to bed for a bit, normally I drink my coffee / tea whilst looking out the window or reading. My phone is not allowed for the first hour! Or it's too easy to get distracted.

I do make exceptions - if I'm up before 5.30 ish (and DH is around) I will read / use my phone, because doing the whole other routine is a bit much and will disturb DH.

Catza · 15/07/2024 13:03

I also set my alarm earlier to allow time in bed before I have to get up. I usually go downstairs and make a cup of tea, then get back into bed with a book. I may do some breathing exercises or gentle stretches which I can do lying down.

Nourishinghandcream · 15/07/2024 13:03

Phone is turned off at night and it left in the study drawer along with the house keys.
Deal with all house admin before the phone is even thought about, drinks, breakfast, Ddogs etc.

Read real books in bed so no need to have the phone anywhere near.
Never scroll videos or update FB.
Have a landline if anyone needed us in an emergency.

TheLeadbetterLife · 15/07/2024 13:09

I hang around with my chickens for a bit, then walk the dogs normally. I deliberately leave my phone in the house for both, and in general am leaving my phone to one side as much as possible. I'm trying to treat it more like a house phone when I'm not working - if someone needs to get hold of me, they can call. I just won't see messages as they come in.

It's hard because I'm as addicted to the internet as anyone these days, but I would love to get back to how things were pre-smart phones. It does help that the internet is absolute shite now. I don't do any social media, and most websites are just a mess of AI-generated cobblers and endless fucking pop ups. Makes it pretty tedious.

Sit up to turn alarm off.
Drink the glass of water I brought up the night before.
Get up and go down for coffee and toast.
Go to the gym.

I’m normally out the door within 15mins of the alarm going off. Otherwise it sets the whole morning back and I don’t achieve what I set out to.
In all honesty I kinda see doom scrolling my phone as a proper low value time user only to be used when nothing else can be done ie waiting for a delayed flight or something.
News / Emails / group WhatsApp messages etc can all wait until I’m back at about 8am, I’ll have a look whilst eating proper breakfast if there’s no one in the house to breakfast with. If there is I’d rather have breakfast and chat with a loved one, then do the phone stuff at my desk if WFH or on the tube if going to the office.
I’m not sure I would ever prioritise looking at my phone as the very first thing in the morning. It’s basically saying ‘I’d rather prioritise looking at YouTube than keeping fit’. And seeing as that’s not my goal… then that’s not the action taken.
I know people who tell me it’s ‘amazing‘ and I must be ‘so disciplined’ etc. To me though it’s just simple logic of aligning actions with outcomes I want, it’s sort of obvious stuff really. Do I want a clean kitchen or to be well versed on the latest uploading of cat videos.. errr yup ok let’s spend the time cleaning the kitchen then. Rocket science it is not.

Radio on, coffee on, feed feline overlord. Get ready for day. SM etc at pretty much set times a couple of times a day.

Tutorpuzzle · 15/07/2024 13:15

Scream silently into the void….and then drink a triple espresso 😉

MargaretThursday · 15/07/2024 13:15

I reach for my glasses first or I can't see my phone 😁

alittlequinnie · 15/07/2024 13:16

I reach for the remote and turn on Good Morning Britain for my 1/2 hour of "what's going on in the world" while I decide to drag my body out from under the duvet!

SnapdragonToadflax · 15/07/2024 13:16

Well, pre-smart phones I used to get up and put the TV news on.

Now I check the news, messages etc in bed before getting up. I hate jumping out of bed and getting ready quickly, I need a cup of tea and a bit of downtime before I get going.

DontGetMeStartedOnThatAgain · 15/07/2024 13:18

I go for a wee! Then put the washer on, have a cup of tea, and lounge about for half an hour. I certainly don't take my mobile to bed with me, and I don't look at it as soon as I get up - my husband does, and he's become a very boring person because of the time he wastes just looking at things on his mobile - I've told him so. We're retired, and this isn't what our life would be like.

DoYouSmokePaul · 15/07/2024 13:20

I get up, brush teeth and go to the toilet, take propranolol and then go back to bed to listen to calming music and do mantras until I need to actually get up.

PassingStranger · 15/07/2024 13:21

breakfast and tv, phone comes later.

holjam · 15/07/2024 13:22

I go for my kindle and read for a bit
Leave phone downstairs to charge overnight

BeyondMyWits · 15/07/2024 13:22

Bed is for sex or sleeping here. So depends on the mood really.

Normally wake up, get up, live life... phone is downstairs anyhow. We set a no screens in bedrooms rule for the kids and we followed it too. I'm kinda glad as it means the phone is only picked up when I actually have spare time, and inclination... not just as a matter of course.

Hairspray123 · 15/07/2024 13:23

You would rather loose an hours sleep or go to bed earier to get up early to go on social media? Do you have young children? Sleep is precious in this household

RaininSummer · 15/07/2024 13:24

Can only do the lolling in bed on non work days but today I drank a coffee, played candy crush, did my words with friends and listened to a radio 4 audio book. It was lovely as I could hear the torrential rain out there and didn't have to walk to work.
