If you don't reach for your phone the moment you wake up, what do you do?

FloordrobeIsGoingToGetME · 15/07/2024 12:52

I have to have at least an hour between waking up and getting out of bed for the day.

I can't remember a time when I had to wake up and get up straight away or in a short space of time.

I'm never late because I set my alarm super early to build in lolling and phone time.

I'm on my phone the whole time. Checking social media, a bit of YouTube, a bit of Mumsnet.

Nothing enriching or valuable.

If you do some thing other than doom scroll when you wake up, what is it, and how can I develop it?

Help needed please!!

I have recently made myself do this before I am allowed to doom scroll.

20 mins learning - eg read or audiobook

20 mins movement - eg exercise or housework

20 mins preparing for day - eg writing to do list, planning dinner or meditation

Otherwise I find that lack at action in the morning leads to a lack of action throughout the rest of the day.

My phone is always plugged in downstairs. During the week I have to get straight up but if I don't have to I read

JudgeBurrito · 15/07/2024 13:32

Lots of very worthy people on this thread... I use my phone as an alarm, so I do inevitably scroll first thing, but I also prioritise sleep over everything so set my (4) alarms as late as possible. That means I can only sit scrolling for about 5 minutes before I'm running late. You don't have to lie about for an hour, that's a luxury. I'd suggest either setting your alarm later, limiting your scrolling time, or leaving your phone downstairs and buying an alarm clock. I can't understand the appeal of lying reading in the morning, even at the weekend if I'm awake I'll get up.

chickensandbees · 15/07/2024 13:33

I leave my phone downstairs and try not to look after it after 8pm. I reach for my Kindle...much better!!

Ariela · 15/07/2024 13:37

Get out of bed, kettle on, while it boils go for a wee, make tea, take back to bed. Watch the weather forecast, get up.

crosstalk · 15/07/2024 13:37

Wake up, turn on Today programme avoiding the heavy duty and often cantankerous and pointless 0805 interview, let dog out, wash and brush and dress. Large cup of tea, then another. Then hit the laptop to read papers online. My doomscrolling is the other end of the day.

Eviebeans · 15/07/2024 13:38

Have a cup of tea in the bath while reading my book

Helloworld56 · 15/07/2024 13:38

I'm on my phone to turn the alarm off as I mostly wake up before it goes off. Then it's coffee, the loo, a shower, get dressed and cook breakfast. Then I'll check for messages and scroll Mumsnet.

Lambiriyani · 15/07/2024 13:38

I pee

pinkspeakers · 15/07/2024 13:39

Well I tend to get up pretty soon after alarm goes off. Quick cuddle with DH, then up.

Occasionally if I wake up too early to get up then I will read on my kindle for a bit.

RockyRogue1001 · 15/07/2024 13:42

I'm another one who has to have an immediate wee

persisted · 15/07/2024 13:42

Turn alarm clock off.
Up and about for some kind of workout, or make tea and back to bed to drink it and read.
I feel better for either of them, which one it is depends on lots of variable factors 😆

BobbyBiscuits · 15/07/2024 13:42

I've taken to just leaving the phone in another room. I usually wake once or twice in the night, but always just have a quick puff on a joint (I'm not recommending cannabis if you don't already find it beneficial), use bathroom then back in bed.
If I look at phone I'll be awake another hour.
Just try it and see how you get on. (Not the smoking, that's just me, lol)

AstonMartha · 15/07/2024 13:43

I can’t imagine lying in bed but I switch the radio on when I get up and listen as I start the day.

Kendodd · 15/07/2024 13:43

God these leisurely mornings you lot have!
I do chores.
Phone lives downstairs, I have a radio alarm clock. Get up make coffee, empty dishwasher, empty washing machine, drink coffee, go to work.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 15/07/2024 13:49

Pee- my bladder insists on prioritising itself!
Dressing gown, stairs with dogs and cats trailing or leading me.
Coffee- quiet coffee- either looking outside or being outside in the garden for a few minutes with the pets before the world shows up with all of its hype and attitude.

Dweetfidilove · 15/07/2024 13:50

Stare into space.
Open my curtains to look at the trees/burds/squirrels.
Listen to the radio.

FloordrobeIsGoingToGetME · 15/07/2024 19:24

Thanks all!

Some interesting ideas.

I don't have small children so no pressure there. I get plenty of sleep and am well-rested so that's fine too.

If I have to get out of bed at 7am, I set the alarm for 5.30, or in the summer, I leave curtains open and am likely waking up naturally around that time.

I think I might try and get an engrossing book and see if that captures my interest,

I also quite like the brain training app, elevate, so might give that a go too,

Thanks all.

I think pets or small children are pretty good at keeping you off your phone!
My morning is dog cuddles, dog walk then feed dogs...then I can think about myself.

doyoulikemyyams · 15/07/2024 19:42

Your first sentence stumped me: you say you have to have at least an hour between waking up and getting out of bed for the day.... why is that? Is it a health condition you're managing?

PatienceOfEngels · 15/07/2024 19:51

I keep my phone downstairs overnight.

Get up, bathroom, dressed and straight out the door for a walk (the last 3 weeks anyway), then make breakfast and coffee (if a school day, lunches and kids breakfasts too), write in my journal, and then I'm allowed on my phone.

Createausername1970 · 15/07/2024 19:57

I don't take my phone to bed. It's on charge in the living room.

When my alarm goes off, I snooze it twice - 10 mins each snooze - then I get up, feed the dog, let her into the garden, empty the dishwasher, make my husband a hot water bottle (he has arthritis and can be quite seized up first thing). Then I make a cup of tea and pick up my phone to do Wordle.

SchoolQuestionnaire · 15/07/2024 19:57

Workout. Walk the dog. Stick a load of washing in. Catch up on cleaning. Read a book at the weekend.

ScottBakula · 15/07/2024 19:58

I am so jealous of those that can get up and make a brew and go back to bed.

I have to leave my house at 5am , getting up at 4.15 is plenty early enough for me !

My phone is my alarm but thats the only time i handle it that early.
I get up , pee , wash , teeth , feed my overlord, wash any pots from the night before , brew . Lunch is always already made so that goes in my bag with my coffee flask then leave for a 15 min walk to the bus stop.
Then mn on the bus on my way to work .

Appalonia · 15/07/2024 20:03

This is a fantastic, energizing gratitude meditation to set you up for the day
