To buy a wedding dress 1/2 sizes too small

I am a size 10 on top and some bottoms, but a size 12 in jeans.

The wedding dress I have fallen in love with is over budget at £2,300. The thought of spending that on a dress makes me wince.

I have found the exact dress, second hand, in perfect condition, for £800. But it's a size 8. It hasn't been altered.

Wedding is 14 months away.

AIBU to buy it and diet and exercise my way into it? Or more accurately, am I being stupid?

Are you serious? This is HORRIBLE advice.

Don’t do it. Wedding dresses run small anyway and buying it small means that even if you diet and exercise your way to a size 8 there will be no room for alterations which are usually essential.

Keep looking! There will be another dress out there which you love and which will be within budget.

Had a complete nightmare! So was supposed to be trying it on last Saturday. Got a call the day before on the Friday from the bridal shop to say Ellis, the designer who was sending the skirt and bodysuit to their shop for me to try on, have sent the whole dress to the wrong bridal shop.

The woman said they'd tried everything to get it to them in time for my appt the next day, but it wasn't possible.

I was so so disappointed and had had a really stressful day at work and I cried in the car lol.

Went to the appointment anyway and tried a different skirt by Ellis on, as well as a different top, and I absolutely LOVED it. I will try to attach a pic with my face cropped but I'm on the app and it's a bit glitchy. All together this one would cost £1,200 which is well within budget.

So I'm going back this Saturday as they have reordered the Marie skirt and Liza bodysuit... hopefully it arrives this time! I will try both on and make a choice.

I contacted both shops linked by pp selling the original skirt and dress I wanted in a size 10, massively discounted and they are willing to let me pay over the phone and will send the items to me which is great news!!!

Wedding dresses are famously small in sizing, so in all likelihood you would be ordered a 14 for a 12 bottom. Or at thr very least a 12. So no, don't do it.
You say you can't afford £2300, but you will probably end up buying 2 dresses that come to a similar figure

Op there’s a reason why you’re not a size 8 now. Really bad idea. Also what if it’s an ‘odd’ size 8 that you can never really fit because of the shape?

Obviously it can all be altered. Thinking of having the sleeves made a little shorter and having the neckline lowered a little.

the top part is actually bespoke so would be made based on what I ask for.

Excited for Saturday, I have a sneaky feeling this is the one though. I will update with pics of the original outfit and you can help me decide 😊

Yes, going shorter on the sleeves and potentially lowering the neckline a little as I have a short torso and it sits quite high on me!

I'm glad you're not going to try and diet into the previous one. When you look back on your wedding photos, you'll want to look yourself, not a temporary version of you.

I did this and so did sister. My only word of caution is that I aimed to get down to 115 ish pounds. But I ended up stopping at around 125 pounds. I looked really gaunt and unwell at a much higher weight than I expected. I’m 5 ft 3. Luckily adjustments could be made but it was a bit of a nightmare.
